He has convened with national and international leaders, including Cuban President Fidel Castro, to pioneer new markets for Alabama’s farmers. He has aggressively implemented new programs within the department such as the Farm to School program and overseen the construction of two new diagnostic laboratories.

In the post-9/11 era, Sparks has ensured that his department modernizes to protect Alabamians from new threats. He has long been an advocate of Country of Origin Labeling and consumer protection, and has adapted this focus to meet new demands generated by the War on Terror. Sparks and his staff have worked diligently to help bring perpetrators of agriculture crimes to justice.”
