Wes Clark and Juan Garcia

Wes and JuanI first met General Clark when he was leading the 19-nation coalition to end ethnic-cleansing in Kosovo. I was a young naval aviator a mile down his chain-of-command, but had just been selected to serve as a White House Fellow, a program the General had also gone through. When his travels around the theatre brought him to U.S. Naval Headquarters in London, his staff graciously carved out a few minutes for us to meet.

Despite leading the first actual combat engagement of NATO, despite being the "face" of the war, and despite maintaining a crushing wartime schedule, the first thing General Clark said when he entered the room was, "When you get to Washington, see what you can do to improve overseas education for the children of our forward-deployed troops."

It's something that has stayed with me since: Despite all his responsibilities, taking care of the troops was still foremost on the general's mind, and that incident told me all I'll ever need to know about the man.

Texas is in the midst of an education meltdown. Our SAT scores are the second lowest in the nation, we have the worst high school dropout rate in the country, we pay our teachers well below the national mean, and that's despite bearing some of the highest property taxes in America.

General Clark's trip down to Corpus Christi to help kickoff our campaign will ignite our efforts to address this crisis, and the support of his "troops" will be invaluable. The General's record of service to our country resonates here in South Texas as loudly here as anywhere in the country. I'm grateful for his help, and for your support.

Let's Take Back Texas,

Juan Garcia
