Concrete Floors and Overflow Crowds: Senator Hillary Clinton in Seattle

|

LSophia's picture

Senator Hillary Clinton made a campaign stop in Seattle last night, Thursday, February 7, 2008. The venue was… puzzling, to put it mildly, a warehouse on the waterfront near the Port of Seattle. Parking was insane, as, due to the Port, most of us had to scramble to find street parking, walk several blocks (if not miles) north, cross over railroad tracks and under the viaduct, and walk several more blocks south.

Taking it the streets: my happy, tiring activist week

Not since the last presidential election cycle or the run-up to the Iraq war have I had a week so full of political events and protests. Armed with a huge collection of shortie’s and ice’s beautiful buttons, a downloadable petition from StopIranWar.com and a cheap clipboard from Office Max, I “took to the streets” to collect signatures and raise awareness.

The Real Prophetic Candidate

Ultimately, Hillary will emerge from this election as the prophetic candidate, not Obama.

No matter what happens, no matter who wins, she has forever blazed a trail for women, for girls and for leaders everywhere.

She has stayed focused on her agenda, despite attempts to throw her off.

She has run her campaign her way and she has stayed in on her terms.

She has stood up to, and, more importantly, ignored the juggernaut of hatred, fear, suspicion, rage, name-calling and mean-minded vilification that would bring your average person to their knees.

Render to Caesar What is Caesar's: the Delicate Dance of Politics and Religion

Anyone who knows me also knows that I spent the last two election cycles lamenting the almost entire co-option of the powerful themes of faith and religion by the Republican side of the ticket. When discussing religion, especially recently, however, Democrats have a strong tendency to sound apologetic, meek, tentative and insincere, tacitly ceding this rich bank of imagery and emotions to the Republicans.

Until now.

Tsunami Tuesday from the coast - the PST thread

Washington isn't a Super Tuesday state, but this is the place to post exciting California and Alaska news. Polls are inconclusive here, my guess is Seattle/King County will trend Obama, but Democrats in other parts of the state will support Hillary.

Both our senators have endorsed Hillary. The Governor hasn't announced her endorsement yet.

Exciting times!

Because I have health insurance

As some of you know, I've had a really interesting week. To put it mildly. The good news is that I’m not in the hospital right now, or struggling against hundreds of dollars of medical bills – because I have health insurance. That magical little plastic card, which I keep tucked in my wallet, usually without thinking about it, made all of the difference.

One Signature at a Time: My Evening with the Peace Activists

Thanks to everyone who sent positive comments and good thoughts my way for my speech to the Episcopal Peace Fellowship last night. Unfortunately, since it was a beautiful evening and the hosting church is having some problems, it was fairly poorly attended. Also, I knew everyone in the audience, some of them quite well, so speaking to them was quite disconcerting – kind of like giving a speech to family members.

The Iran War: Brzezinski weighs in

Former Carter National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski was on the Daily Show the other night, promoting his new book: Second Chances: Three Presidents and the Crisis of American Superpower."

Brzezinski is clearly and extremely intelligent and thoughtful man, but also quite funny. Some of the highlights from his interview include:

I wrote this blog over at Kos, mainly because I'm upset with Carville, but also because I thnk Dean did a great job, and that he should stay as chair of the DNC and not run for president again!

So, if you feel inclined, please go over to Kos and rate up my diary. Thanks!

A lot of people, myself included, are upset that James Carville couldn't wait until the ink was dry to start up the Democratic Circular Firing Squad again, this time aimed at Howard Dean. Governor Dean wasn't my top pick in 2006, but has done a superb job as DNC chair - and even if he hadn't, we WON. Isn't it kind of stupid to change course AFTER a victory???
