72: My stopIranWar Challenge to You

When Gen. Clark and Jon Soltz started the stopIranWar Challenge, http://securingamerica.com/ccn/node/11686 , they set the goal at 100,000 signatures on the petition. They purposely made it a high number to inspire us. It wasn't meant to be realistic.

But think about it.

As of right now, we've got 41,101 signatures.
817 grassroots individuals have recruited new petitioners.

100,000 - 41,101 = 58,899
58,899 / 817 = 72.091799

72

There are 10 days left in the Challenge. That's 7 or 8 a day.

If we each get 7 or 8 a day, we can get 100,000.

ENOUGH! NYC

Reg NYC's picture

After an extremely busy summer, much runaround by the city over permission and technical problems with the website, we finally brought ENOUGH! to Manhattan.

Noon is a little early on a Sunday for New Yorkers and we didn't have much time to promote it. So, it was just my husband and I this week.

Hopefully we can amass an army by next week.

Stop the Campaign

Like most supporters of General Clark, I wondered why he hasn't announced yet. I wondered why he was being so down at the DNC Winter Meeting instead of trying to pump everyone up.

Then I saw Hillary Clinton's speech. "If we in Congress don’t end this war before January 2009, as president, I will." We're in the middle of the greatest foreign policy disaster in our history, and here's my Senator saying that if she doesn't get around to doing anything about it while she's busy running for President, she'll do something in two years and only if elected President.

General Wes Clark Endorses Stephen Harrison
Citing Challenges at Home and Abroad…

He says, “New York Needs a Representative who will Restore Integrity to Government”

Immediate Release

November 3, 2006. Little Rock, AR. Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Wesley Clark today endorses the candidacy of Stephen Harrison in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

General Clark said, “Today Americans face many difficult challenges at home and abroad.  There has never been a time when foreign affairs were as closely linked to our daily lives as they are now.  While fighting the causes of terrorism that threaten our country, we also face a changing global economy that demands America educate its young men and women so that they can successfully compete for good jobs in the global marketplace.  We need Stephen to fight for us in Congress, and I am pleased to endorse him today.

Civil Liberties vs. Security - A False Dichotomy

The debate about the NSA wire tapping or detainee abuse or military tribunals is always framed as a choice between our safety and our civil liberties. The question is always, 'Should we give up our civil liberties for our security?' This is a false question. In fact, I would argue that giving up our civil liberties makes us less safe.

The problem before 9/11 was not that our intelligence agencies did not have enough raw data to prevent the attacks. The problem was that they did not have the resources (or the will, but that's a whole other entry) to analyze it, to sift through the mountain of raw data that they had to find the useful bits and put them together (dots and all that). When you broaden your intelligence gathering, you do so to diminishing returns. You get a lot more data, but less of it is useful. This makes the analysis problem worse. It increases the size of that mountain of data exponentially, while only increasing the number of useful bits by very little. This makes us less safe.

Tavern on the Green, New York City

I arrived early. So, not many people were there, but it filled up quickly. I walked laps around the restaurant until I started recognizing people. My god, did I start recognizing people. Jack Murtha was the first face I recognized. Then, of course, Charlie Rangel arrived. Then I noticed Eric Massa. A crowd began to form in one spot. So, I went over to see what was going on and saw Donald Trump and his daughter. I noticed a lot of local people: Christine Quinn, New York City Council speaker and my City Councilwoman; Manhattan Borough President, Scott Stringer; NY Attorney General and future Governor, Elliot Spitzer; Former Governor, Mario Cuomo.

Question and Answer Session
June 19. 2006
transcript by Reg NYC

Questioner: (inaudible)

GENERAL WESLEY CLARK: Not until we get an effective exercise program that identifies critical needs. Until that's done and has legitimacy, people won't feel comfortable committing the money to programs. They, they just- I mean, I've done a lot of work with DHS too, and it's an extremely frustrating environment. I always tell people who come to me who want me to introduce them to people in DHS, I say, "I'll be happy to, but honestly you should avoid the government at this point as a customer, if at all possible." It's, it's just extremely difficult for companies to get these government contracts in anything other than the Iraq circumstances with rapid turnaround contracts. DHS is tough to work with. That's- they, they don't have a good way of prioritizing, and they won't get a way of prioritizing to break the political process until they do exercises.
