The meeting will feature presentations from the Democratic Presidential

The candidates will join more than 400 DNC members from around the
country, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
(D- NV) to talk about the strong leadership Democrats are providing now in
Congress and around the country and will provide in the White House.
The following presidential candidates will speak at the winter meeting:
Sen. Joe Biden, Gen. Wesley Clark (Ret.), Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sen.
Chris Dodd, Sen. John Edwards, Sen. Mike Gravel, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Sen.

It's a challenging spot but we all know the General can handle it and shine. It's an excellent opportunity to show exactly how he compares as a speaker.

I wish he would be the last of the day. The last one is always the best-remembered by an audience, especially if it's good.

What the audience should see is a bunch of pious platitudes and one meaty, substantive, tour de force.

What I'd like is an advance text of Clark's speech (although he probably won't have a text). Then be able to distribute a checklist to all the attendees to ask them if X's speech included A, B, C, and D.

Mario Cuomo said, "Wes Clark is a man of whom you can ask a question, and he will look you directly in the eye, and give you the most truthful and complete answer you can imagine. You will know the absolute truth of the statement as well as the thought process behind the answer. You will have no doubt as to the intellect of the speaker and meaning of the answer to this question....So you can see, as a politician, he has a lot to learn."

...and so it was...and so he did.

Last might have been better, but somehow I don't think it so much matters when Wes speaks.

Of the modes of persuasion furnished by the spoken word there are three kinds. [...] personal character when the speech is so spoken as to make us think him credPersuasion is achieved by the speaker's ible. [Pathos...] Secondly, persuasion may come through the hearers, when the speech stirs their emotions. [Logos...] Thirdly, persuasion is effected through the speech itself when we have proved a truth or an apparent truth by means of the persuasive arguments suitable to the case in question.

is one of the best speakers I've ever seen. But coming on right after him, I think General Clark has a chance to prove he's in the same league -- and the earlier he proves that, the better.

My instinct is that Gen Clark is very competitive. He'll raise his game to be at the required level.

And while Obama's speciality is soaring rhetoric, the General can be powerful in a very personal, understated way. I think it'll be a nice contrast between oratory and intensity.

I don't think General Clark has to outperform Obama, just bring it down a notch or two, score with credibility and allow the comparison to sink in.

If he was before Obama it would be harder IMHO.

Edwards is the one who I think is going to find it hard to sustain the standard. He really didn't cut it at the Dem convention in 2004 and he's going to have two tough acts to follow.

MS...it sounds like the DNC will not have WIFI in the room where the speeches are given - so live blogging will be restricted to typing in comments, rushing out to post, then rushing back again.

Since the DNC is streaming the speeches...how hard would it be to organize one of the series blogs or another area to live blog the Speech. It seems like a couple of folks could keep their streaming window open (it will be in WindowsMedia) and also have a window open to live blog.

Any thoughts on how the Series Team or someone else can take this on?

From Howard Park. If you don't get in, form a rally at the Hotel entrance. Bring a Clark sign of some kind:

GETTING IN:  I am told that credentials will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis to the public at the DNC Registration Table beginning at 8:00 AM, within the Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Ave., NW, a few blocks north (uphill) of the Dupont Circle Station on Metro's Red Line.  It may be that the DNC will be more restrictive. Everything is subject to change.

WHO:  Wes Clark will be speaking, I'm told that the speechifying will begin around 9:00 - 9:30 AM, and that the order will be Dodd, Obama, Clark, Edwards, Kucinich & H. Clinton.  Others including Biden, Richardson & Vilsack will speak on Saturday.

WHAT: The DNC Winter Meetings.  The DNC runs this event.  They are responsible for credentialing, scheduling, etc.  WesPAC will have a table at the event and they need volunteers, hopefully you can help out for an hour or two.

WHEN: Friday Morning, Feb. 2

WHERE: Washington Hilton. 1919 Connecticut Ave., NW

WHY: This is the first major joint speaking event of the 2008 race.  Gen.Clark, clearly, is considering a run.

Subject to Change: Yes, the schedule & everything else is subject to change.  The above is what I know as of Tuesday morning.

THE NIGHT BEFORE: Some have suggested an informal get together the evening before, Thursday, Feb. 1,  at Biddy Mulligan's, at 1500 New Hampshire Ave, NW, an Irish Bar within Jury's Hotel, on DuPont Circle, beginning at 8:00 PM.  Please come if it is convenient!

In the last year I've felt that General Clark has a Secret Santa at the DNC and that is Howard Dean. Clark gets the most important spot on this conference. To the new Congress, he is boots on the ground as we enter a new century and a new political country. He is Pathfinder. The changes that have taken place in Democratic politics in the last three months are nothing less than astonishing. David Sirota has a diary this morning at DKos which clearly delineates the political and cultural changes we are seeing. This is the first major political Awakening of the new century; all else will fall like scales. Jim Webb's Tuesday night speech was contrasted by Andrew Sullivan in a London newspaper to "testosterone free" Democratic speakers of the past six years. There will be no more of them. We sent them up because we were afraid to face the leadership crisis, but we are no longer afraid. This could be the most important speech of the General's life as it will awaken the sleeping dragon which is the new Democatic Party.

Right now I see this as a race between Edwards and Clark and whomever wins that wins the Presidency. The Repubs are in free fall, spiralling deeper into moral and ethical mayhem and strategic incompetence whenever John Warner, McCain or Richard Lugar opens their mouths or sends another dangerously inept and border-line pathological op-ed to the WaPost. I think in the end they will go with someone country, relatively unknown and out of the limelight like Mike Huckabee to try to retain a shread of continuity. I don't know what they'll do. Anyway, whatever heroic loyalist they send up to take the hit, they'll lose and the winner of the Democrtatic Primary will win the Presidency.

Clark is the solution to the problem. The solution needs to rise above the dust of hoopla Obama and Hillary are kicking now. It is a long process and sometime after the dust of fascination has settled down, it will be clear who has the solution. How to build a steady force, a movement, that will overtake and push pretenders to the side - is the task. I believe that Clark has been laying the solid base for such movement. It is time to ignite the fuse!

Over on DKos, djm4america was a Clark supporter until 12/18 and then on 12/21 he jumped on the Obama bandwagon, saying he was tired of waiting for Clark to make up his mind, and even if did run, he couldn't win. He kept posting about how all these hard-core Clark supporters that he knew were going over to Obama, etc., etc. Then just yesterday, I think, he again posted at DKos that he was back to supporting Clark should he run. So, who knows where he's at or what he knows.

I just feel led to ask those who do pray to continue in your prayers for General Clark for him to have a clear mind, a relaxed sense of purpose and I hope he knows there are literally hundreds if not thousands of us who are 100% behind him out here in the country. He is our American success story our hope for a new future for America and American politics. Forgive me if I have offended those who do not pray, I hope you will at least keep General Clark in your mind and hearts with only good feelings and thoughts of support. All potential presidential candidates were invited to speak at this meeting quite some time ago, long before any or few official announcments. So, it would not be the height of hypocrisy for Clark to go to this meeting and not announce, because he wasn't invited because he had said was running or on the condition that he could only speak if was running. Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think this is the appropriate venue for an announcement.
