New thread?

I hate having to worry about the "thread rolling." 150 will be OK in slow times, but it's going to be a mess in fast times.
Just yesterday I got a LTTE published.
I seem to have a talent for LTTE writing, anyone who has no idea how to do should get in touch with me.
I also wrote an article framing some weggie issues, with lots of factual links:

Someone turn on the lights! Where the heck am I?
Hi Reg!
This whole new CCN is rather like the Movable Feast - it's a 'progressive blog', in every sense of the word.
OK. Now where am I going - I feel like a pinball!!

Always made me look a little washed out.
OK. I think I've got the hang of this. I can keep up with EVERYTHING as long as I rely on the 'Recent Comments' box on the left of the page.
Kinda wild. I feel as if I'm floating.

NOTEL: If everyone keeps titling the next thread as NEW General Speaking thread, no one will know which is old.
However, it can be used as a marker or beacon for viewers, if removed when the next thread is opened. Rather the "NEW", I like to suggest this convention:
"CURRENT - Generally Speaking (Open Thread)
-------------------------------------------------

How about using a time/date in the title?
All these "New GD" or "Current GD" will be COMPLETELY IRRELEVENT in a few days/hours! So we'll have DOZENS of "NEW GD"'s floating around all over this site in only a few days. Talk about confusing! What if EVERYBODY created a "New GD" at the same time!
I think we'll need a pecking order or volunteer list or Blogger Rank that we can turn to, to start a new GD thread. Otherwise complete anarchy will rule!
If we can agree on a FORMAT, we should stick to it.
How about "General Discussion 8-27-05 12 pm et"?
It would be GREAT if we could get an auto-time stamp in the title.
No rolling thread will be/is very confusing, imo...

I changed the title to include the date and time. When the new one starts, I'll change the title to "old."

WOW! That is COOL! But will you be able to change the name or will it time out on you later?
If you look at DU's "General Discussion: Politics" it just keeps going and going and going!
Lobby / Latest / Greatest General Discussion: Politics
It shows comments as Newest First and the page marker goes
Page 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | ... | 20 | Archives
So maybe we just need to let ONE GD continue on and on and on and do it like that? Will this platform support the auto-archive? I don't know!
It doesn't matter as long as we all show up at the same place consistently.
My 2¢ fwiw...

How come I can only type so much in comment box and then it just stops? And...when I go back to front page have to relog in? Anyone else have these problems?

I bookmarked the Front Page on my Bookmarks Bar and it doesn't make me sign in again when I go in that way.
I'm now kicking and screaming! It may be me, but it's tough to fine the current GD. It's a pain in the neck to have to use the html code and that's time consuming. We can work out different ways of getting around problems. but how will new people know what to do? Too exoensive to run the old format. . .? It'll be more expensive to lose people (old and new) who can raise funds and work together in a more user friendly environment. In short . . . this sucks! Why should we labor through a problem riddled format? Apparantly the "designers" didn't spend enough time on the old "scoop"

I think it may actually be easier for new people than it is for us, because they're not used to the old one. It may be easier if you're starting from scratch.

I can't find where I change my clock settings! Everything is showing up in CENTRAL TIME! The change isn't in the 'edit' box either! HELP!
Anybody know where to go to change this? Or do I have to move to Chicago? =:-O
-lost in GMT

Yes, it appears we're all on Little Rock time. Does this mean we get to run into General Clark at the mall like Arky does?

At least, I can't find it. I click on my account. And then edit. It lets me change my password, or put in a signature, or upload a photo. Or change the who's online box. Or create a contact page. That's it.

There's a cryptic box on the edit my account screen. You have to check it. It mentions something about Who's online, but it's not obvious when you first see it that that's what it's talking about. Everyone missed it. I happened to check it at first... sort of randomly. I think a few others did as well and that's how we figured it out.

Geez I am on LR time and can't find the EDT ....did it go away after we signed up...I put EDT on my sign up...and its CDT...Now.

I click My Account, then Edit, then Account Settings and I have the following boxes:
- Account Information - with User Name, Email Address and Password
- Picture
- Block configuration
- Comment Settings
- Contact Settings
I do NOT see anything referring to Time Settings ANYWHERE! Sorry.
-still lost in GMT

I can't find where I change my clock settings!
You can now go to your account, click on edit and select your time zone. Just double-check the time you select with the time displayed on your computer's screen to be sure the correct zone was selected.

Anyone know if we passed the 12000 user mark yet?
<====== Hi Catherine.
Maybe when I get back someone will explain to me what we're doing tp get around the "KINKS"

Am I just missing it, or is there a way to see a list of all blogs from one starting screen?

I'll probably make the rest of you mad, but I went out to do the weekend errands and came back to a blog of very critical, impolitic bloggers.
You have a place to gather, the pink has gone away and there are probably changes that will be made based on some of the positive, construction comments.
Please leave off the moaning and groaning.
This is a work in process.
Blue State of Mind

I was basically called stupid by larry for asking why we were limited to 150 posts. I have a master's degree in this shit and I know why limiting a page size is important. Why did we go to 150 rather than the 300 we used to have?
Sybil spent all last week working on beta testing and she was essentially ignored.
We made it perfectly clear all along that the heart of the CCN was the general discussion. We're willing to try to emulate it. It doesn't have to be perfect. But I don't appreciate being treated like an idiot when I ask a simple question.

Page reloads must tax the server heavily. 150 vs 300 posts/page would lessen that, I would think. Also, 300 posts/page is noisy IMHO. Not to say that improvements can't be made. Just a thought.

But instead of an answer about relative merits of different numbers, I got horseshit about how Kos has to have 12 servers. I didn't get "well, we took it down to 150 from 300 because we found that means we only have to have one server."
Since we don't have an auto-thread generator, and since Josh said that was like the one thing we couldn't have, 150 is just going to be very inconvenient. We burn through 150 on a GD thread in a few hours. We'll be constantly worried about whether it's time to start a new thread.

I am confused about the 150 limit since there are more than 150 comments on several threads. Is it 150 comments per page per thread?
When on dial-up on the old blog, I always used the pagination option since I would hang trying to view more than 100 and it just took too long.
We could have, it seems, more than 150 comments on a thread. It would just have pages.

We need a poll to determine if it's more convenient, for now, to have fewer discussion threads with pages or more discussion threads with no pages.
And then we appoint a few people who frequent the blog daily at certain times to start the new threads as necessary.
Until the new blog format has settled down anyway.
I'll give the poll a try on my blog.

The limit is 150 per page. Posting takes you back to the first page. Going to any page makes posts not "new" anymore. In order to be able to follow a conversation in any format other than newest comments first, you have to keep threads to a single page.

Sybil spent all last week working on beta testing and she was essentially ignored.
Sybil and others on the CCN Team did spend last week beta testing. I can assure you, no one's comments, suggestions, or ideas were ignored.
This is the first step in moving CCN forward with the new software. The grassroots volunteer team that Sybil is on will make their final report on August 31. Many of these individuals have put in over 40 volunteer hours/week since the first week of July. We wanted a decision-making process that involved a broad cross-section of the Grassroots community...so please consider being a little more patient.
Change is happening. We are all working to support General Clark.
Questions not acknowledged. "Ignored" was not my term.

Yes there is an essential difference in results. Just wanted to clarify since the comment you were referring to is God knows where and I didn't want John to think that's what I said in any sense of the word. But you didn't quote me.

thru team communication that we were going to be making an "after-action" report.

Your post is demeaning PA. I think some constructive criticism is in order here. Frankly, we've been handed a blog format that is not user friendly. If you have no problems with it, great. But we are all trying very hard to offer guidance about what IS user friendly, and if you consider that moaning and groaning, again, great. Your opinion is welcome as well. I speak my mind. Get used to it.

However, you might find constructive, positive comments will get attention before "criticism".
Speak your mind all you want. It doesn't offend me.
Blue State of Mind

Make Ohio BLUE!!!
I went over and changed my settings to see if this does what yours does.
Also, without the "Word-style" editing, my poor html ability is very taxed, esp posting links.

Very Good Rich - and look, when I reply to you your original post is at the top so I remember what I was responding to in the first place.
Change is happening all around us.
Except for in the brain of Mr. Bush who said in his weekly radio address: "In his weekly radio address, Bush acknowledged the job for U.S. soldiers was not yet done.
"Our efforts in Iraq and the broader Middle East will require more time, more sacrifice and continued resolve," he said."
What have I personally been asked to sacrifice and why does he continue to think that resolve will solve this whole boondogle.?
Blue State of Mind
Yeah, we need more resolve and sacrifice - he is doing all of the resolving and the troops, their families, and the U.S. taxpayers are doing all the sacrificing!!

I put the "Make Ohio BLUE!!!" in the
Comment Setting - Signature: box, but it shows up in my "POST" box as the first line.
How do you get that little box at the END of your post?
It's COOL!
-Still Lost in GMT

I just post my comments above the line that appears in the comment box. That allows me to delete it if I want. Also make sure it shows the blockquote tags. Change the {} to <>
{blockquote}Blue State of Mind{/blockquote}

So you have to start your comments ABOVE the blockquote line
EVERY TIME???
Wow, this really slows things down. Gotta THINK about every post I make. At least there's an EDIT button. And I ALWAYS use the 'preview' first. Lots to do to make a pretty post. :-(
[blockquote]Make Ohio BLUE!!![/blockquote]

I thought I read we could use EITHER the ' [ ' kind or the ' < ' kind.
I'm SO confused...
Make Ohio BLUE!!!

The square brackets are for commands developed for druval, while the angle brackets are for html commands. A few of them are interchangeable, but others are not.

Adam was just on Sybil's thread. He says they're working on the parent button and the comment numbering. He says they're also looking into whether they can get away with upping the 150 number.
If we can get those things, I think all we're going to need is a way to find the GD. And I'm pretty sure we can work that out amongst ourselves with some naming conventions, prudent rating up, etc.
I'm smiling. I think the tide has turned.

WHOA! I think newbies and first-timers are gonna have a very difficult time trying to post here. Larry's Open Thread has links in it that make the screen W I D E and people are posting "not so nice" pics (saw one of Ann Coultergiest already - ick).
(just my 2¢ again...I'm up to 4¢ hee hee!)
Make Ohio BLUE!!!

My head hurts.
I'm gonna go make some cole slaw and potato salad!
Be back later...
Make Ohio BLUE!!!

Does everyone know that if you click that button at the bottom of the account edit form, then people will be able to send you emails? I've noticed that only about half the people I've tried to email have it set up. I understand that not everyone will want that feature enabled for them, but I did want to make sure everyone knew that the feature was available.
PA, we could never be mad at you!!!

I think having all the info on the left column no matter where you go will vastly improve the personal blog discussions. I'll also make it easier when we have to go to a new thread, to be able to see if there's a new post on the old on without having to go to another page in between.
I have found the following settings to be almost useable, however conversations don't flow the same way.
I set to Flat list -expanded
Date - newest first
150 comments per page
So no pages and newest posts are always right in front of me after a refresh. It does have the downside of not being very conducive to conversations though.

It popped back under the post of my Reply...Things are ALL A GO! Think I learned how to set color...applaud pleeze! See if it works...hahah
