Meet the stopIranWar.com Challenge

Today, we're launching the StopIranWar.com Challenge to help us reach 100,000 petition signatures in just two months. With the tensions escalating after the Iranian capture of 15 British sailors and marines, it is now more important than ever to build public pressure on George W. Bush to use diplomacy with Iran to prevent another conflict in the Middle East.

The StopIranWar.com Challenge will recognize our most dedicated supporters who encourage their friends, family, and colleagues to sign the petition to President Bush. Over the next 8 weeks, we're focused on building our base of supporters. And by participating in the StopIranWar.com Challenge, you will be the key to our success.

Here's how the program works:

Visit the StopIranWar.com community center to request a password. Then just login and start sending emails to everyone in your address book, encouraging them to sign the petition. We'll keep track of every one of your friends who sign up by clicking on the special registration link in the emails you send out. We'll automatically track your progress.

And for those who want to step away from the computer to gather signatures, we've got a process for you to get your offline signers to count toward your tally as well. Visit the Challenge page to learn more.

Need more incentive?

Weekly Challenge Leaders

  • Individuals who get the most signatures in a given week will receive a copy of General Clark's new book, when it comes out, signed with a note of his thanks, plus be recognized online for their efforts. There will be a leaderboard, as of the second week of the Challenge, so look for your name to show up when you blow everyone away with the massive numbers of signatures you've gathered!

Campaign Challenge Leader

  • The person who gets the most signatures over the full length of the Challenge - will be a VIP guest at the Clark event of their choice. They will also be notified with a personal call from General Clark.

We need to get as many people signing this petition as possible. The more who sign it, the more attention it will garner in the media, and the greater the impact it can have as leverage on future decisions about a war with Iran.

Get your password and join the StopIranWar.com Challenge today.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jon Soltz

I am amazed and bewildered why there is not 100,000 signatures right now.

I kind of wonder if supporters of others don't want to show support for Clark.

Would you sign a similar petition by Hillary, Edwards, Obama, Richardson or others?

...and my answer to your question is "no." I don't sign for MoveOn, Barbara Boxer, or Russ Feingold, and I'm not about to sign for one of the "competitors."

Our targeted audience would be the millions of people still uncommitted to one of the people already in the race.

Except that I'm suffering a bit from petition fatigue and I'm tired of getting added to mailing lists. But if it were a worthy cause, I'd sign regardless of who I thought would "get credit" for it. I think that's what Wes would expect us to do.

It's not a partisan issue as far as I'm concerned. If Tom Daschle, Fred thompson, Rudy Guliani, or any other Republican put forth this exact same petition - I'd still sign it.

It's the right idea - regardless of who came up with it.

Is there any way to gather signatures on a physical snail mail petition there & have them count? I'd be willing to go out there & twist arms for a few hours a week...

Submitted by Kat on April 5, 2007 - 10:06am.

Yes, there are 'in person' petitions to download and print here:

http://www.stopiranwar.com/?page_id=18

There are instructions on how to enter the names so that they are attached to your personal community activism page and a petition is sent on the signer's behalf here:

http://www.stopiranwar.com/?page_id=22

Although there is a fax number printed on the 'in person' petitions, it would be most helpful if you could enter as many as possible online once you've gathered them. We're working on creating an efficient method of 'counting' and processing signatures that do not have email addresses. At this point, that process is incomplete.

Hope this helps.

Submitted by shortie on April 5, 2007 - 10:21am.

for you to upload them from an excel or csv file, I'd be more than happy to do the typing.

But cannot 'attach' them to the gatherer's community action page. The database isn't sophisticated enough. :?

Submitted by Pilgrim on April 5, 2007 - 10:36am.

Hi Shortie,

I think the problem with uploading from a file in batch might be with getting the letters sent to Bush and the Congress. You may have to enter each name to trigger the messages.

Otherwise, I'd be glad to do that as well. I've done some the one-by-one way. It triggers a message back to the person as well as one to Bush.

The really tricky part is deciphering hand-writing. Typing isn't so bad when you can read the entry. For some of them, I had to use a magnifying glass. Other times had to Google for domains and/or street addresses. Sometimes I just had to guess. . .

Go here:

http://ga4.org/login/login.tcl?return_url=%2fwespac%2fcommunity%2ehtml&domain=wespac

sign in -- I tried using my CCN password but it wouldn't take. So go ahead and use your regular password and it will bring up a page where you can click to have your password emailed to you.

Once you get your password, log in -- you can leave things as they are or you can edit it and add your own words, add a photo, etc. Scroll down and add the email addys of whomever you want to send it to. That's it.

Once your people start signing the petition you'll get emails notifying who sighed up. In the email notification there will be a link back to the website where you can click "report" and see how many of the emails you sent have replied. You can also do another batch of emails.

Very easy, really.

You shouldn't have mentioned it, Dinger.

A legislative candidate here (Molly -- so she called it MollieOke)), had a fundraiser. It cost $1 for people to sing, but anybody in the audience could stop or restart the singer for $5. I tell ya', there were $5 bills flying around like gnats in a Oklahoma wheat field, and the candidate made a ton of money. It was the most fun I'd had in years.

Man in Black

(A Democratic Party Manifesto)

by Johnny Cash

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for-the poor and-the-beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that jesus said,
A-bout the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think he's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought to be a man in black .

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, i wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believin' that the lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believin' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' ev’rywhere you go,
But “til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, i'd love to wear a rainbow ev’ry day,
And tell the world that ev’rything’s o-k,
But i'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Til things are brighter, I'm the man in black.

We must be related. Damn, reading those powerful words make me get misty.
Hey, wasn't it Johnny Cash singing in the background at the Winter Conference as Wes was about to speak? "I Won't Back Down" I think it was. Man oh man, as a total and complete Johnny Cash fan AND Wes Clark supporter, when I heard that, I thought I died and went to heaven!

Actually, I'm not much of a Cash fan. But I suffer as a singer from being a bass, and the tenors get most of the good parts.

How I came to "do" Johnny Cash is pure serendipity. I had learned about the MollyOke event a day before I watched the Cash movie, and thought to myself, "Self, as a bass, you can do those songs." I had been diddling with some Neil Diamond (whom I much prefer over Cash), but many of his songs were out of my range.

Leaders<!-- Posted by Christopher Frazier on March 25, 2006 -->

Wes Clark and Jon Soltz have had 817 grassroots individuals reach out and recruit new petitioners since the campaign started. That’s pretty cool!

The good news…there are many people who are taking action on their own initiative and recruiting new petitioners. We need your help to take the StopIranWar message to the American public and send a petition to the White House. Join the Challenge today - and make a difference!

Current Challenge Leaders (2/21-4/8) include:
Regina Bloor - 24 new petitioners recruited to send the StopIranWar message to the White House
Reza Sharghi - 21
Susan Meara - 21
Michael Armstrong - 17
Jeff Mangum - 16
Natalie Weber - 16
Seth Moomey - 12
Ken Ellis - 11
Sherry Reson - 11
Jonathan Gensler - 10
Katherine Mueller - 10

Now, for the first week’s leaders….

The Weekly Challenge Leaders for 4/2-4/8 include:
Regina Bloor - 14 new petitioners recruited to send the StopIranWar message to the White House
Seth Moomey - 12
Jonathan Gensler - 10
Debby Burroughs - 7
Rachel Fox - 7

Kudos to Reg for leading the first week. Reg was followed closely by Seth and Jonathan. Debby and Rachel rounded out the top 5.

Thanks to all five and the rest of you that recruited new petitioners last week. We know this is tedious work. It lacks the glamour associated with other campaigns. It does make a difference! It is very encouraging to see names you do not recognize recruiting 4-5 new petitioners. It shows there are a lot of people who believe this issue is very important to them. We can assure you it is extremely important to Wes and Jon.

Thanks to each of you who made the Leader Board. I hope to see more new names on future Leader Boards. Wes and Jon appreciate your help and continued work in bringing this important issue to the attention of the American public.
