Important Book 'Tour'

Wesley Clark | Call to Action
As we know, A Time to Lead will be officially issued shortly (early September), and I've had some thoughts on adding to the 'official' tour events planned by the publisher.
The official tour will cover New York, DC, Chicago, SFO, LA, Seattle, Little Rock, and Portland. I'll inquire whether its Portland, MAINE, or Portland, OREGON! I will also ask for the exact dates and places, including any 'metro-area' venues, and any other questions you might have.
All of this is just MY thoughts, so please contribute.
I thought we could have a few people walking the street in front of/near the book store with large posters, saying something like WES CLARK IS HERE with A Time to Lead. We walkers can hold and distribute written material of some sort, from book marks to business cards to descriptions of his attributes; book marks can be distributed inside the stores at the designated Wes Table, too.
I missed the last time I might have seen him at such an opening, for Winning Modern Wars, so I don't know quite how it will go; I have seen others, tho. He might say some words, and then be available to sign purchased books, but I have no thoughts about 'our' participation. (except I've just gotten a thought.)
In addition to the 'designated' cities, we may be able to 'walk' at stores in other cities where the book will be available.
SO: 1. let me know how many of you and yours will be able to walk, in which 'designated' city;
2. let me know whether you will (likely) be able to 'make,' 'create' posters;
3. let me know whether you will (likely) be able to make book marks;
4. let me know whether you will be able to make written material for distribution.
AND, for Other than 'designated cities,' which cities/towns, where do you think we should 'walk,' and related information: can you do it, where - particular shop? how many likely could go (meaning you, friends, family, etc.)
Please respond here AND/OR click my name.
Remember, this is OUR project; I'm NOT creative! so HELP!!!

As I understand it, the book signings aren't supposed to be political, but helping sell more books is terrific.
There are lots of non-political things that people can do to help, as you've suggested above.

Hi Ellen and all,
Some Time to Lead materials (tri-fold, one-pager, bookmarks, etc.) will be uploaded on to the Four Star Democrats website soon for folks to download and print if they want to. Drafts have been completed and I suspect that they will be approved and available very soon.
Am available to help herd people into the bookstores, although I am quite certain the issue in NYC will be overflow capacity. Please put me on your list for updates and ideas.
'herding;' stores can do that if they want. I've thought of 'walking' with info posters.
So much the better if overflows hang around and TALK.

At at least one or two of the tour stops, advance tickets are required. I don't know if that means buying one or just reserving a place. So "herding" people into the appearance may not be possible.
What I'm saying is that we'll need to understand the groundrules.
Of course we can "herd" people without an event. Just stand outside your local bookstore and ask people to buy the book passing out flyers to whet their appetites.

And would you explain 'groundrules,' so we can determine what we may do, apart from 'official' tour folks.
It is discrimination of a sort, but not 'invidious!'

The groundrules aren't known and may be different at each place, depending on availability of space and maybe some other things. Some, for example, may require that the host sell their own books rather than allowing people to bring their own. That's just a guess, though.
Not all the dates are known, and I suppose the ones we've heard could change.
Here's what we think we know so far:
Washington, D.C.
9/18, 7:30 p.m., Borders, Crossroads Center Way, Bailey's Crossroads
9/20, 6:00 p.m., Barnes & Noble, 12th Street NW
New York
9/19, Barnes & Noble Lincoln Triangle, 1972 Broadway at 66th St.
Seattle
10/2, 7:00 p.m., Third Place Books, Lake Forest Towne Center, 17171 Bothell Way NE
Chicago
10/11, Borders, North Michigan Ave.
Again, all subject to change.

Does anyone know why it is such a short tour? Who is the publishing company handling the tour details? How can we write to them to request more tour stops? I live in Portland, MAINE, so can help here if that is the Portland he's coming to. We may also want to start writing to CSPAN to see if they will cover any of his stops on "Booknotes" or "Road To The White House".

C-SPAN and C-SPAN-2: Booknotes and Book TV. NBC/MSNBC/CNBC: Tim Russert's Saturday evening show and, of course, "Meet the Press." And Olbermann, definitely. And don't forget "Hardball." Tucker Carlson probably wouldn't do it.

would do this kind of coverage, but I sent an email last night regarding Gen. Clark's new book. He seems like a reporter who wants to cover true stories ;-D.

like to see him with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show! When it gets a little closer to the release date, we can write the show and make that request.
The publisher has a marketing department that will line up a lot of publicity opportunities, I am sure. But we can all be of great help.
I'm in Portland, Oregon (hope, hope)
Someone once asked me if I had learned anything from going to war so many times.
My reply:
Yes, I learned how to cry.

See Stan's post above; I'v written to publisher for more info.

but I'll say it anyway: I'll be at the one in Little Rock. :)

My suggestion about 'creating' a poster and bookmarks is to stick with Gen Clark's cover book. I know it's not our favorite but it's all about his book tour so I think it would be better to be consistent. Hmmm there can be a way to use the cover book but create it in b & w and put some colors in other areas, so that it doesn't look exactly the same as the cover book, and of course create a bookmark from it...
I guess I will email you soon for more info. And if it's on Wednesday then I hope it's later afternoon since I am working… I wouldn't mind also handing out info etc.

Regarding making some materials, please stand by for a couple of days, to avoid duplication of effort.

I received your e-mail, and replied to it; let me know whether you received my reply, please.
THANKS!

might make a great B & W photo;
Demand a more realistic and strategic appraisal on the Iraq issue, stop talking troops and start talking policy. - Wes Clark, Aug 08, 2007

He'd sell a lot of books there, I'll bet.
Wes Clark: Soldier, Scholar, Statesman.

I'd like to take this opportunity to yell, "Come to Iowa, Wes!"
Thanks, I needed that.
"Some of them put on their cowboy boots and put their feet up on the desk." -Wes Clark
We prolly can't control anything about the 'official' tour, but we may hold our own 'events' at other places.
I'll start a list of those requested:
Dallas
Iowa City
'Kansas'
Others? adding NH and SC. Pick your cities!
We should assume that Wes won't get to the 'other' cities/towns. It will be up to us to find places [popular book stores,] to confirm when the books will be there, and decide on our 'events.' There's no reason that all have to be the same; I have thoughts but that's not important; I tend to be conservative, style-wise.
Keep in mind that WE'LL have to do it all at the other places, whatever 'all' is.
And THIS for a poster or handout: "Wesley Clark is on the path to become a great leader--an FDR or an Eisenhower--and in this book he shows us why: because he understands in depth the crisis America faces, and he remains undaunted. Insightful, passionate, intelligent, and battle-tested, Clark's vision can restore America's leadership in the world."--Eduardo Morgan, former Ambassador to the United States for Panama
If anyone knows how we can confer elsewhere than here, please let me know.
THANKS, ARKY and all!

There's always the tried-and-true Yahoo! group. I like them, obviously, because:
- They facilitate file sharing (flyer/bookmark/poster designs, e.g.)
- Nobody has to maintain a list of interested people and try to keep it up to date and in synch with everybody else's list.
- About anybody who can use e-mail can use a Yahoo! group.
- They provide a history of what people have discussed and decisions that were made.
I salted away the group "ATimetoLead" a couple of weeks ago just in case people thought it would be a good idea. Now...don't go and join it yet. Let's talk about it first.

every hour. I'd like to use it for book events AND ALSO FOR MY 'SPECIAL PROJECT,' both of which have 'political' aspects, the second much more than the first.
I won't touch anything of yours until you say 'go,' but it would help a lot AND TIME IS PRECIOUS.

Well, I can't really comment without knowing what the other project is, how much overlap in participants there might be, whether or not it will need to share files or have a database or calendar, how long it will last, and whether or not some discussion is needed.

- Active threads don't "age" into oblivion and stay visible without excessive navigation or scrolling. (I spend as much time here navigating and scrolling to find "new" posts as I do reading.)
- Newer Yahoo! group features allow people to view the message board by thread, resembling how a lot of blogs look.
