You don't have to live in California to get involved, because by skewing the results of the 2008 presidential election, this initiative clearly will affect all Americans.

Excerpts - Sen. Barbara Boxer Aug 16 ,2007Just when you thought it was safe to start thinking about having a Democrat in the White House, along comes a cynical power grab by Republican operatives. Unfortunately, it's happening right here in my own state of California. This dangerous initiative would radically change the way California apportions our electoral votes in presidential elections. It isn't reform -- this is a partisan power grab by Republican operatives in the Karl Rove tradition.Check out www.FairElectionReform.com you don't have to live in California to get involved. Please join me and reject this cynical partisan power grab.Click here to stop the White House from being stolen by Republicans.

Unless we act now, the White House -- and our democracy -- will be hijacked by a Republican "elaborate dirty trick" in June 2008. http://www.couragecampaign.org/page/s/NoPowerGrab
So says a powerful editorial from the New York Times titled "Stacking the Electoral Deck".
Last Thursday, we told you about an unbelievable ballot initiative proposed for June 2008 in California -- a right-wing power grab straight out of Karl Rove's "dirty tricks" playbook. If passed, it would dictate that California divide up its electoral college votes by congressional district -- resulting in the Republican theft of at least 20 electoral votes in November's general election.
Game over. You might as well give the keys to the White House to Rudolph Giuliani, Mitt Romney or John McCain right now.

In a scathingly powerful editorial, the New York Times is blunt in describing how this cynical scheme by a "shadowy group" of California Republicans will "do serious damage to our democracy."
Remember when Karl Rove stole Florida from Al Gore in 2000? What about Tom DeLay's single-handed theft of five congressional seats in Texas?
If California loses its winner-take-all system, the consequences for America will be catastrophic. Iraq. Health care. Global warming. The future of every single issue we care about will be decided in California on June 3, 2008.

This is becoming a national scandal. As the Times said, if the GOP succeeds in this "elaborate dirty trick posing as reform" then they will have rigged the 2008 election to virtually prevent a Democrat from being elected to the White House in 2008. No matter the popular vote.

In November 2008, we will be voting for a new President in the most important election of our lifetime.
But your vote won't matter if the Republicans steal the California election in June 2008. Please stand up right now to the GOP's dirty tricks and say "No" to this cynical power grab.

Anybody who believes in "one man one vote" should agree in principle with dividing the electoral vote proportionally in some way, rather than the prevalant winner-take-all system.
But at least the way California is now, it will hurt the Democrats. But a part of me believes that the principle should trump partisanship.
It's silly, though, for most states to use winner-take-all while some divide their votes proportionally. It should be the same for all states. The current hodge-podge is absurd.

Once in a while you get shown the light, In the strangest of places if you look at it right.

of California is asking all of you in the skinnier states (under 55 calories.... er, electorals) to pitch in and help save our votes. In the end it will be OUR President, all of us, who gets elected as a result.
Take 15 seconds to click a link, type a name and zip code and then take 30 more seconds to send to your top ten. (only accepts 10 addresses at a time from the campaign site)
45 seconds for a fair presidential election. Not bad.
THANKS from the Fat State. : )
