Romney suspending presidential bid
Former Mass. governor had pledged to go all the way to the convention

updated 6 minutes ago
BOSTON - Mitt Romney will suspend his presidential campaign, NBC News has learned.

His withdrawal effectively cedes the Republican nomination to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington Thursday, Romney talked of Democratic Candidates Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama retreating in Iraq and declaring defeat.

He then told the crowd he disagrees with McCain on a number of issues, but that he'd given the mater a lot of thougth and if he fought on all the way to the Republican convention, " I forestall the launch of a national campaign and frankly I'd be makign it easier for Senator Clinton or Obama to win. Frankly, in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror."

Romney added, "If this were only about me, I can go on. But its never been only about me. I entered this race... because I love America, and because I love America, in thsi time of war, i feel I now have to stand aside, for our party and for our country."

The former Massachusetts Republican governor has been seriously trailing McCain in the delegate count since Super Tuesday.

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., remains in the race but trails Romney in the delegate counts.

That the Romney people will (in the primary) vote Obama. Of course if it is an open state such as TX. I am not sure what states left, are open or closed. Worries me! Ya know the Hillary haters.

Does anyone know?
EDIT:
NOW explaining Romney is SUSPENDING HIS CAMPAIGN, he is not conceding..their is a difference. Explained on Cnn, that he is still active in votes, but will not campaign. So technically, he is still active..
Interesting????

has more to do with finance laws than anything else. I recall that was the explanation when Edwards 'suspended' his campaign as well.

but I don't think romney was taking public financing so I am not sure it applies to him.

It was the most disengenious blather.

Say what? Okay. So, what deal did the Olympic hero make with McCain? It just doesn't smell that well. McCain/Romney or what?

The conservatives and the fundamentalists.

I think a McCain/Huckabee ticket will have wider appeal in the GOP.

Romney might have overcome the Mormon issue, but he couldn't escape the flip-flop stuff this go-round, nor the un-likeable millionaire CEO image. If he had been able to overcome those, I think he would have been the Dem's most formidable opponent in November. I think he'll now bide his time like Richard Nixon did, and seek ways to re-invent his image. I predict that we haven't seen the last of him.

Wes Clark still could be the national security candidate.

It's great that he is out, because I still think he might have been the most difficult Republican to beat in November. My guess is that one thing he has calculated is that McCain will either lose the GE or die in his first term, and then Mitt could come to the rescue. That's just a wild guess though.

But it's too bad that he's out because that means a McCain/Huckabee pairing is more likely. That ticket will appeal to the entire Republican base, and worse, could result in Huckabee becoming President some day.

I think McCain is going to be far more difficult to defeat than Romney. With his bank account and male model looks he couldn't even buy victories in Republican primaries. McCain on the other hand does appeal to independents and some Dems. Its not going to be easy.

Now that McCain has a clear road ahead he has more freedom in choosing a VP which probably reduces the chances of Huckabee being the pick. Had Romney stayed in and managed to win something McCain might have been pressured to cut a deal with Huckabee to tie up the nomination.

fresh enough in people's minds to still have enough Presidential appeal on election day next November. Also, he does make some stupid gaffes ala the "Barbara Ann" thing.

Your point about Romney's looks reminds me of something I've not yet seen said about Obama. Just as Romney is a bit too handsome, isn't Barack's saintly image a bit "too good to be true" for the average Democrat?

....still love McCain, especially Indies......even some Dems.

And the military will vote for him en masse.....unless there is a certain General in the Dem ticket ;)

However, I still wonder if he won't begin to look pretty yesterday by next November even to many of those who still love him today. The campaign is very likely to be brutal, and he always has problems fund raising. I don't see the wealthiest part of the GOP coming out to support him, and that is likely to make his campaigning even more unpleasant.
