Calling all Superdelegates – Your wisdom needed to avert potential disaster.

Nick Kelly's picture

Here we are, my fellow Democrats (and friends who are reading this), on a hugely important mission to change the disastrous course we have been following for the past 7, soon to be 8, years, and we haven’t yet quite made up our minds as to which of our talented Democrats should be piloting our course home.

'Denver, we have a problem….'

Denver, if we don’t get this piloting disagreement decided pretty soon, I’m afraid it’s going to be up to you to bring us home safely. And if you don’t bring us home before disaster strikes and our shuttle is split in two, we could lose our great opportunity to take command of Washington and set our nation’s ship of state onto its rightful course.

I, for one, am certain you will find a way to help us solve this problem, because you are the best and the brightest that we have. Moreover, many of you have been involved in this effort for quite a long time, so I’m sure you know your stuff.

By now you’ve all looked at the data, and you all can see the problem.

Sure, there are lots of pilot-specific factors that affect this; and we could discuss those practically forever; but right now I’m still part of the crew trying to gain control of the shuttle, and frankly, I don’t really have time for that just now. I know that you’re really busy too, so let’s just summarize the problem and try to come up with solutions while the pilot-specific data keeps coming in.

First of all, we all realize that we might not even be in this situation if not for those Republicans in the Florida state legislature who moved our Democratic primary date in violation of Democratic Party rules. If they had left well enough alone, it seems likely that Florida Democrats would have helped a lot in deciding which of our leaders should become our new pilot. I say that because one of our leaders didn’t campaign in Florida and won there, while the other leader did campaign via television ads in Florida and still got soundly defeated. The situation was somewhat different in Michigan, where some Democrats in the legislature went along with the Republicans, but the outcome there was the same. However, as we all know, in any contest, rules are rules; and no matter how smart we may or may not have been in devising them, it’s very important to every democrat, that we do our best to follow them.

The trouble is - we all know that there are some Florida and Michigan Democrats who will think it extremely unfair of us to exclude their votes in choosing our pilot. And as you will certainly remember, Florida and Michigan are both very important to us once we nominate our chosen pilot to become the next commander in chief of our ship of state. It ought to go without saying, then, that we need to do something creative to make certain that Florida and Michigan voters feel that their votes do make a difference to the Democratic Party. We shouldn’t risk losing even one of them, because in the Electoral College, that one disgruntled Florida or Michigan Democrat might make all the difference.

That’s where you come in. According to our rules, you are free to support whichever pilot you wish, and that is as it should be out of respect for your wisdom and your knowledge. As you make your decisions regarding which pilot to support, I don’t know how you will decide to resolve this Florida and Michigan dilemma; but resolve it you must, unless you feel comfortable possibly conceding one or both of those states to the Republicans in November.

Maybe you’ve already figured out how you’re going to resolve this. If so, fine. But just in case you haven’t, please allow me to make a suggestion. Now, I’m no Superdelegate, so I may be completely off base suggesting this; but I am a county and a district delegate currently hanging on for dear life up here on the Democratic shuttle that could break in two, so I hope you’ll indulge me a little.

According to Democratic Party figures, Florida and Michigan together would normally be permitted to seat 366 voting delegates. That’s nearly as many as the 370 pledged delegates that California gets to seat! Now, 38 of those 366 are Superdelegates, just like you – however, like the rest of the FL and MI delegations, those 38 don’t get to vote, mainly because of what the Republicans did in Florida as I explained above. Some of them already publicly support one or the other of our potential pilots, and I’ll bet they feel pretty lousy that those Florida Republicans made it impossible for their vote to count. How would you feel if Florida Republicans took away your Superdelegate vote? Think about that for a minute and, I’ll bet you can better understand why the average Florida and Michigan Democrat will feel robbed if we don’t get this fixed. And unfortunately for our pilot, especially if he is the one who lost in Florida and Michigan, many of them will feel robbed by us instead of by the Republicans. We really mustn’t let that happen.

By sheer coincidence, there are currently almost the same number of undeclared Superdelegates still available (372) as there are Michigan and Florida delegates who, according to our rules, won’t be permitted to vote at the convention in Denver (366).

So, here’s my proposal. I know that it’s a practical and political impossibility for any group of you to try herding all the other Superdelegates into supporting any particular solution. If that were possible, I would propose that you all agree to divide yourselves into two camps that were directly proportionate to the Florida and Michigan results. That way, each of our competing pilots would be most fairly represented at the convention in Denver. However, since that is not practical or politically possible, please allow me to suggest a second best alternative.

Those of you who become convinced that any one pilot is clearly preferable to the other should vote your considered wisdom on that matter, as you always have. And I recommend that those of you who find it very difficult to choose should factor those Florida and Michigan results into your thinking. Let those Florida and Michigan voters know that you considered their voices when you cast your vote. If enough of you will do that, I fully expect that we can return this shuttle to the launching pad in one piece, and together we can right the course of our ship of state next November.

'Roger, Denver. Thanks for everyone's help and ideas. We can do this, together. Signing off now, to conserve our oxygen for the rest of the flight.'

Wes Clark still could be the national security candidate.

realeased Feb. 8,2008 regarding the selection of Michigan's Democratic delegates:

"I don't see a practical way to hold a caucus in Michigan. Given that 600,000 Michigan voters participated in a primary that was held in accordance wih Michigan law, it seems to me that it would not be practical or fair to throw out the results of that election.

"On March 29, each congressional district will select its delegates at 15 Congressional District Conventions. I continue to believe that Michigan's delegates will be seated at the national convention in August."

I would also like to add that our other Sen. Debbie Stabenow has endorsed Hillary.

delegate selection process, and show up in Denver with a strong demand to be seated, regardless of how all the other remaining states and super-delegates declare. The rules committee needs to know that that rule really stinks.

I'm still hoping, however, that a floor fight can be avoided by a Hillary 2025 plus vote amongst those delegates that the rules committee sees no problem seating. That's why I'm appealing to the super-delegates in this diary.

Also, if Obama gets there with more than 2025 votes but fewer than about 2150 votes, you can bet that his delegates will resist seating Michigan and Florida in any way that they can. That's when a floor fight would be necessary, and it could really be deeply anger provoking. That's the metaphorical crash of our shuttle, taking the dreams of both potential pilots with it. It wouldn't be 1968 all over again, but the effect on voters nationwide would be similar, and it would boost the chances of the Republican candidate.

That said, I've no problem at all with Michigan and Florida going all the way with this, including a brutal floor fight if necessary. Hey, it's the rights of millions of Democrats which are at stake here, and if I lived in either state, I wouldn't want my delegates to simply give up without a fight, if a fight was truly necessary. However, a little bit like Wes saying that war should always be a last resort, I'm saying that a floor fight over this should be a last resort also. First of all, as with wars, it is possible to lose a floor fight, and I don't want that to happen because that would turn off so many Democrats in Florida and Michigan that we could lose both of those states in the GE. Secondly, if we can anticipate realizing the Presidential nomination will of Florida and Michigan Dems without a floor fight, and calmly get them seated because that wouldn't actually change the outcome, that's the way I'm hoping this will go. Then you can have your rightful say on the VP selection and the party platform as well as the Presidential nominee.
