Canvassing in San Antonio, TX

Firsthand Accounts

I spent all day working here in San Antonio for our gal! We had a couple hundred volunteers show up early this morning at the campaign office, and Dolores Huerta, after a moving speech, sent us out with precinct lists to hit the streets for Hillary. Those unable to do the walking stayed behind to phone bank.
Dolores Huerta was wonderful. I hope you guys get the opportunity to see her one day. She is such a calm, strong soul - it emanates from her person. Seriously. In speaking of Hillary's relationship with the Latino community, she pointed out that the ties are long and deep. Dolores Huerta met Hillary back in Arkansas, when Hillary would drive down to the migrant camps and try to find out what she could do, how she could get the children into healthcare systems, into school. She spoke of Hillary's fight for healthcare LONG before anyone else cared one thing about it, and the ridicule she took for that unpopular stance. She spoke of her 35 year relationship with Hillary, and her respect for the grit and courage of the woman, plugging away trying to make life better for working people, and for children, often to very little fanfare.
She said, "I see the distance in her eyes". Hillary looks to the future, to the next generation, and always has.
She spoke of a couple of times in Illinois, when she had tried to contact and speak with then State Senator Obama about some needs and concerns of particular Latinos, and had great support even from Mayor Daley and other prominent Democrats, Senators, etc. Obama would not even meet with her.
He refused to even talk to Dolores freaking Huerta.
She talked about the falseness of the drivers license issue, and how hollow any statements "in favor of" drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants are. No president can do a thing about that. It is in the power of the individual states. Hillary has pushed for comprehensive immigration reform, to give these people a MEANS to BE LEGAL. Which is what they desperately want. Most have no desire to be in violation of the law. If you give them the means to be legal, the DL becomes a moot point.
She said that now suddenly the whole country is all concerned with "the Latino vote" , and courting it. But Bill and Hillary offered them a place at the table, with respect, long before anyone else did, and before it was popular to do so. You don't build that kind of relationship overnight. You can't.
She said something in Spanish that is evidently sort of a Mexican proverb about opportunists, and gave a rough translation: "Some only come to see the cactus when it is in bloom."
She said that Hillary had spent a life fighting for us. Now is our time to fight for her.
So off we went to canvas! Our blue-collar, working class neighborhoods here are strong for Hillary, and my group of 8 split into three subsets with our maps and went doorknocking. Before we even made it into the neighborhood, while making our way along the sidewalk from the business street where we had parked, we were getting tremendous response to our teeshirts and signs. Horns honking, yells of "Viva Hillary!", waves and smiles and thumbs up. Only one thumbs down with a shout of "Ron Paul!" LOL!
A few people actually turned around and pulled their cars over - excitedly asking if we could give them a sign, a bumper sticker, anything they could have to show their support. We proceeded into the neighborhood. I think in three hours we found 3 undecideds and 2 Obama supporters. Everyone else said their entire family was voting for Hillary.
One woman chased us down asking for a sign for her windows before we even got to her house. Not an easy feat, as I think she must've been about 90. :-) But it wasn't just the women. The Latino men were fabulous. No hesitation about a woman president here, folks. Big proud smiles and comments of "That's my lady!!" Oh, San Antonio loves this woman. They know who has been in their corner fighting for their families for years, and did not just arrive there yesterday asking for their vote. And they will tell you. And they will rhetorically ask with a shrug: " Obama? Huh, what has he ever done for anyone? Who has he helped?"
Afterwards a bunch of us hauled our weary feet into a wonderful little neighborhood dive consisting of a leaning old cottage on the highway, with a scruffy decor, a hot pink paint job, and good puffy tacos. My kind of spot! (If you want a real fried puffy taco, you have to come to San Antonio. We invented them, and no one else makes them right.) We gave our last sign to the proprietor, to put in his window along with his "Go, Spurs!" logo. Others came to our table asking "Where is the campaign office? How do I find out where to go vote?"
We are doing it again tomorrow.

That's important too!

What an awesome account of the day! Thank you for your brilliant memory and for sharing it with us! and for the time, energy and heart you put into the campaign! Really heartwarming to hear these stories!
Once in a while you get shown the light, In the strangest of places if you look at it right.

My poor family knows that they get little attention until after March 4th. Fortunately, I have a "husband for Hillary" as well. AND he can cook! ;-)

I wish I spoke Spanish, so I could remember the original version, not the English paraphrase.

Thanks so much for posting this. We know you have had a long day. Thanks to your efforts and those of thousands of others...we will win.
Tonight we are opening the Texas HQ in Austin. So many people showed up we had to have two rallies with President Clinton. The Fire Marshalls just moved a large group outside so we could meet the fire code. Bill is running late, but that's ok since both crowds are on fire. We had 1,100 people go through training today. Now they are here late after making calls and walking precincts.
President Clinton spoke earlier today in Amarillo and Lubbock. I don't think we've had a President or Former President in these two West Texas towns. John Miller, one if the earliest DraftClark volunteers in West Texas...to be continued

JOhn, there were two John Millers in the draft -- John Miller and John V. Miller. Which one is the Texan?

I'm in touch w/someone from the Hillary campaign to get something going in my county, near Cols, OH. I'd be all over canvassing as long as it's not snowing or raining.
There's a Hillary ad TV right now as I write this. I'm definitely on a Hillary high from Thursday... ready to work for "our gal" as you say....phoning, canvassing, whatever it takes! :-D
Wes Clark Democrats...let the Clinton campaign know who sent you

Thanks for all you are doing there. You are lucky to live in a warmer climate. We're getting snow here tomorrow. It'll be a good day to make calls for Hillary.

I loved reading that remark because it is exactly what I see in Hillary's eyes. And you can't achieve that unless you've been there; done that. And Hilary most definitely has.
I love canvassing and in 2004 I did it for Wes Clark (in Delaware) and John Kerry (in Pennsylvania). You really get to see what's in the hearts and minds of "the people" when you speak to them on their doorstep. I wish I could be down there, doing this with you, WCMB. We'd make a helluva team! :)
However, I will be phone banking from home and helping out in whatever way I can, going forward. Hopefully, this race will go on to the April 22nd Pennsylvania Primary. Hillary seems very strong in PA and I will definitely have my boots on the ground prior to that match up.
I'm so psyched!!!
and for all you did, WMCB!
ANd I agree that Dolores Huerta needs to be out there--early and often!! esp re her experience with "St.O" vs ( I love that moniker!!)vs with HC.
The General gets it right.
Competence--What a concept!
...here's one thing I'm doing:
Looking for Hillary signs in yards, then stopping by these known supporters and making sure that they understand the critical importance of not only casting a vote, but also showing up at their precincts right after the polls close on March 4 to be counted in the caucus format which is going to allocate 1/3 of the elected delegates.
Can't let Obama take his typical 65% caucus advantage.

and brilliant thinking too, lol.

Way to go, WMCB! These rickety old legs can't handle that stuff.
Great report!
