Hillary - the 110th Congress- the Beef

|

It may be hard to believe - but there was an Obama supporter here the other day who put up a long list of what was supposedly the legislation Hillary had worked on or sponsored in this 110th Congress… and- (here’s the hard to believe part) - it seemed to be only a litany of petty monument re-namings, and holiday declarations and the like, intended to diminish Senator Clinton's stature as a legislator and trivialize her accomplishments. I know, sounds quite preposterous that anyone would voyage over to Clark Community expressly to bash Wes’s candidate on the home court -- but that was the net effect.

I thought – on the off chance that this enthusiastic Barack-backer might not be presenting us with a full picture- I would research it further. It’s only a Thomas.gov click away after all….

I found (surprisingly) that there were over 150 Bills in this last session of Congress alone that Hillary had Sponsored (not to count the co-sponsorships, too many) So I just went through them and picked out those that were most interesting to me, and that had nothing at all to do with renaming any government facilities or commemorating unheard of holidays.

Seems she actually was doing her job. And the people’s business. Check out some of the bills and amendments she has sponsored below and see if there are any issues that the American public might be concerned about.

And I just want to take this occasion to thank those people who keep propelling me to research Hillary more deeply with each attempt to embarrass or undermine her. Each time-- I grow more and more convicted that I've made the right choice! And I learn a little more. It's truly rewarding. This is an impressive listing, and again- it’s only @55 out of the 150+. Lots of reading!

Feel free to bookmark this list and use it the next time someone shows their “concern” about Hillary’s lack of congressional mettle and asks 'Where's the Beef?'

Senator Hillary Clinton

...Hillary has the legislative advantage, the experience advantage, and a host of other advanatges.

Why is she in the situation she finds herself?

My conclusion is that the country -- in general -- is fed-up with Washington, D.C., and all those who claim it as their own.

because the story that sells is that of a young African-American who comes out of nowhere to challenge the inevitable. He is fresh, a good orator, promises hope and change, and has not been tainted by politics as usual either in Washington or in Illinois. That is the story, period. What part of the story is real and permanent, will be for history to sort out.

"The young Rev gives good sermon,"

and then the choir sings, they pass around the collection plate, and the money rolls in.

He's also got a great smile, and I hear he can play pick-up basketball.

He used to be a community organizer, and his wife works for that hospital.

He even says he can save us all $2,500 per year while giving away more of our money to the insurance companies. Very cool!

Isn't that enough to unite the whole congregation?

Sure he's never actually run a church before; and he's never actually shown that he has what it takes to beat the devil; but he does talk like a saint when he gives those sermons; so why worry that he doesn't quite talk or walk like one when he's just hanging out? Hardly any of the congregation has even seen him that way so far. And the ones who have are all just part of that sour grapes bunch who still want us to choose that woman.

Can you imagine? A woman Minister! Sure she can answer questions better than him, but that's probably just because she's done the lord's work for close to 35 years. You know what that means, don't you? That means she has knowledge. Hey, we all know her husband has knowledge too. ;) ;) And that's what's made it so easy for us to convince so many of the congregation that she ate that apple....

So, here's to the young Rev, and all that beautiful money he keeps coming in! May he give good sermon and keep the congregation transfixed all the way to the bank!

The above short unfinished playlet entitled "O Preacher, Take Us to the Bank!" was written by Nick Kelly just a day too late to get any mention at the Academy Awards. Aw shucks.

From Matt Stoller @ Open Left

Via Greg Sargent comes this non-remarkable statistic (NYTimes PDF Graph) asked of primary voters.

Compared to the way the news media have treated other candidates, have the news media been harder on Hillary Clinton, easier on Hillary Clinton, or have they treated her the same as other candidates?

Harder 48%

Easier 8%

Same 43%

And now to Obama.

Compared to the way the news media have treated other candidates, have the news media
been harder on Barack Obama, easier on Barack Obama, or have they treated him the same as
other candidates?

Harder 14%

Easier 33%

Same 52%

I bet if you asked blog readers who has been treated well in the press, they would answer differently than Democratic primary voters. I'm having a tough time keeping any interest in this primary, it's both discouraging and upsetting to watch this disconnect between the internet space I've worked on for four years and reality itself get worse. When I offer obvious points, for instance, that Obama may not be progressive, since he has in fact spoken repeatedly of his lack of ideology, I get ridiculous pushback from his supporters denying what he himself has said.

There's no discussion of Iraq, just conversations about irrelevant ads that talk about 3am phone calls between fear-mongering politicians who agree with each other. It's so unbelievably dumb it's hard to deal with.

I suppose the fact that Democratic primary voters actively agree with Clinton activists on the media and do not agree with Obama activists will be explained away somehow, but I hope it isn't. I hope somewhere some progressive in the Obama inner circle is trying to figure out how to reconnect this movement to reality.

(And people wonder that we're a bit defensive. As I always try to point out -- imagine if things were reversed....)

discouraging and upsetting to watch this disconnect between the internet space I've worked on for four years and reality itself get worse.

The big blogs, MoveOn and DFA, lost all credibility as far as I'm concerned when they made the decision to back one Primary candidate over the other.

They are no longer honest brokers of 'progressive issues'.

Remember them?.

Everything is seen through the lens of the person they are backing, and as such.... what were once common values, are backed away from....like universal healthcare and wanting Dem leaders to fight for what is right.

All of a sudden, getting along is cool.....well except for the 'spineless' Dems in congress I guess?

How do they rationalize this? Makes my head spin.

Atrios and Digby alone have remained neutral as far as know.

No matter who our nominee is, I'm really not sure the blogosphere of "Crashing the Gate"......can be put back together again.

Too much bad blood.

I think people are just plain tired of being pissed off and Obama offers them positive feelings--just like Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did.

We learn. We change. That's progress. If we don't do that, well, we're GWB.

I think everybody is different. To some people, the "hope" is worth the risk; to others it's not. I think what was perhaps a mistake on Hillary's part is that she should have offered both hope and experience. They are not mutually exclusive. There are too many people for whom hope is just too important. You can believe that's stupid or ignorant but that doesn't solve the problem. Bill Clinton is from Hope, Arkansas. We're 8 years further down the path toward Hope if we start from where Bill left off. I think it was a mistake to think that people would recognize that on their own.

We learn. We change. That's progress. If we don't do that, well, we're GWB.

Does this fed-up with Washington angle from Obama translate into we are not going to do anything about the crimes of the Bush administration?  Exactly what is he moving away from?  It cannot only be corporate control he needs relief from.  Certainly he must recognize that we have bigger issues to deal with - like the abuse done to our troops, for example.  Not to mention the abuse done to our Constitution, our civil liberties, etc.

And btw, since Obama is all about unity, why hasn't his greatness stopped the war already?  Why hasn't he convinced everybody on our most important issue - the war?

The spacing isn't perfect, but they are roughly one generation apart. Add to that the huge disgust with the GWB administration, and you have the perfect formula for a change seeking Democratic wave.

The trouble for the Democratic Party is, that "believe in" wave is cresting too soon. It got started too soon, and as a consequence, it's finally beginning to run up against some skepticism. Watch for it to crest and break before next November.

If it doesn't crest and break by then, it will have an even bigger and more spectacular crash shortly thereafter when it explodes on the hard cliffs of our emerging post Bush-Administration reality.

Either way, it's almost for certain that Democrats will be very disappointed if we make the mistake of nominating the candidate who wants us all to believe in his good judgment based entirely on one speech he made to an anti-war audience in his home district.

Wes Clark still could be the national security candidate.

So the Clinton 'establishment' pumps out a flood of bills for the Senate to consider as part of her campaign strategy. How low is that?

She's running for President. Bills that bear her name as sponsor come into consideration as she would take office. To me it looks like an attempt to monopolize attention.

Any Senator can be prodigious with a signature, that doesn't make it right or mean that a flood of items to place before the Senate contain any 'beef'.

I thought you wanted CCN to start taking the moral high road. If you want that, I think the best way to get that would be for you to start and get others to follow your lead. The art of leadership is getting the other guy to want to do what you want him to do.

What you've written here sounds to me kind of like a baseless attack--"an attempt to monopolize attention." That's not the moral high road, is it? Is that really going to make anyone here think? Or is it just going to make them mad?

Don, you offer an opinion that is different than most others here. That should make you interesting. But, instead, because of the way you phrase things, you're just kind of, well, infuriating. That can't be what you want. You're a Clarkie, right? Why would you want to piss off other Clarkies? I know you don't.

I think you just want to make us consider other arguments. That's a good thing and should be welcomed here, but that's only going to happen if you research your arguments very well and then come here armed with facts and perspective instead of with a stick.

We learn. We change. That's progress. If we don't do that, well, we're GWB.

Most likely because I'm not buying into Gen. Clark's line of reasoning. We've found the point of weakness in Gen. Clark's argument for Sen. Clinton and we've exploited it successfully here at CCN time and time again. Several of the bloggers here have actually, in desperation, fallen back on arguments from authority, appeal to mysterious 'essenses' and 'substance', defending repression, silencing of opponents and punishing of dissenting opinions with troll ratings, /against your own site admins/ who have warned you not to do this.

"Don, you offer an opinion that is different than most others here. That should make you interesting. But, instead, because of the way you phrase things, you're just kind of, well, infuriating."

Sen. Clinton and Pres. Clinton have certainly expressed their anger and infuriation at their opposition, of this there is no doubt. That infuriation is frustration at not having their desires met, of expectations that have not come to pass.

Gen. Clark has been critical of 'realists', yet it is not the 'realists' that are responsible for your fury.

It's your ideology.

It's an ideology that we oppose.

Why will you not buy his line of reasoning when he has spent in the WH and have seen more political depth and corruption then any of us?

The bottom line is this. I don’t buy promises anymore either and since Gen. Clark gave me a better insight what goes on in the WH when I read his two books, listened to him when he was commentator for several news broadcast and has spoken to many radio shows, I feel his judgment are more closer then to any repetitive campaign slogans, great ads, and great speeches.

Yes there are some issues I don’t agree with him, but when it comes to judging a character and knowing who to hire, I do trust him. Why? For example, did he become a four star general because he has strong features and speaks like one? Or is it that four star generals have to know their soldiers in order to win war?

Why was he chosen to be the NATO commander in which he had a great responsibility building a team in order to take care of the Balkan war, which means he had to analyze people he hired, correct?

And just to keep it simple, he put so much sweat and blood for this country that now he just decided to close his eyes and randomly pick Sen. Hillary?

To wrap it up, all the achievements he has received sure doesn't label him as an incompetent man.  And he sure knows what goes on in the WH, and I will repeat this, than any of us who are just blogging and listening...

"He must know things that we don't know, he has ruled men."

Surely this is true, and few or none of us deny it.

Unfortunately for your side, it represents the rule of men.

On our side, we represent the rule of law.

people are not born misanthropic.

But rather they become products of some knarled twistings of fate and bent genetic code that somehow propels them there.

Given that, I know I should feel more compassion... but the misanthrope that feeds on planting misery for others in his path loses me. Instead, all I can see is a kind of psychic pollution that is both destructive, viral, and ... preventable. And so much refuse.

Hope-snuffing, unity-busting, inspiration-smashing stuff.

Does anyone have a link to a comprehensive list of Hillary's "35 years of experience"? I think I remember somebody posted it here as a blog a while back, but I don't have time to dig today, and I could use this info.

Using those legislative proposals as a guide, it is apparent to me that Hillary's health care system expertise is absolutely stunning! Moreover, she is quite obviously a strong advocate for health promotion and disease prevention through strengthening our public health system.

The contrast with what I see as Obama's naivete and poor judgment in this arena is an enormous matter with life and death consequences for millions of Americans.

And for anyone who might have missed it, I've kept after this matter with subsequent diaries. Here's the most recent.

and you gotta wonder about the Obama supporters here: at what point are they being informative as to Obama's record, and when are they just misinforming and taunting the Clinton supporters?

In this case the commenter, because of his/her misinformation, did more harm to Obama's reputation and actually bolstered Clinton's, simply becaue ms in la did such a great job pulling together a complete rebuttal.

Thanks, ms in la!
