by paradox @ The Left Coaster

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California, finally proposed a 2009 budget last Thursday, a serious disaster of draconian cuts and tax increases all underpinned by a grim bedrock of principle: “…the absolute bottom line is that we cannot spend money we do not have.”

The Terminator’s solution for obtaining some of what the State needs to function? Borrow against future gambling revenues.

Californians have many issues but no one on the planet would ever think we could be so mind-numbingly, crushingly stupid as to ever accept borrowing for needed revenue next year, the very embodiment of “spending money we don’t have.” Lacing the insult is the acid of borrowing upon gambling, my my my, how he have grown up into responsible American fiscal adults 207 years into the Democracy.

No, this isn’t some pathetic civic face splat from a Hollywood doofus totally out of his element engaged in a dangerous clownish political ploy, we should all be so lucky. It’s a fully deliberate budget bomb (SFGate), precisely designed to blow up in Sacramento this summer to wreak as much havoc and damage as possible. That has always been the mission of The Terminator.

No, Arnold is not a very bright individual, but he always has loved being the testicular front man for the California Republican Party, George Shultz’n Pete Wilson and those fleets of Newport Beach yachts, frantically grabbing as much as they can in an orgy of greed, to hell with everybody else and especially those filthy Democrats in government who dare to take even a penny of ours away in taxes!

Far too many Californians have blithely assumed that this glitzy sexy Hollywood alpha, married to a Kennedy, could never be more than a trivial amusement on the news. The obscenity called a “budget proposal” also has a cute $6 billion hole of revenue oblivion, Arnold just threw up his hands and decided the Legislature had to be adults and come up with a solution, somehow.

The fight to come up with all the necessary money (borrowing against gambling will never fly, of course not) is going to tear the Legislature apart, and after enough damage has been done and more abuse inflicted upon Californians enduring a recession (brilliant Keynesian move there) sometime this Fall California government will fail many more of its citizens in a cascade of public disgust, leaderless and regressive, precisely as planned, Arnold and his pals grinning all the while. Perhaps then the real truth of what Arnold and the Republicans represent to the future of California will finally sink in.

Called in to do the cutting for Schwarzenegger's first budget was Donna Arduin, Jeb Bush's finance director in Florida, whose reputation is that of a hard-right enemy of all social welfare.

EXCERPT

Arduin took vacation time from her job as Florida's budget director when asked to conduct an independent audit of California's finances as a member of newly elected Governor Schwarzenegger's transition team. Two days after being sworn in, the governor made his first appointment, tapping Arduin for the position of director of finance for the state with the fifth-largest economy in the world. "I enjoy a challenge, she understates with a grin, "and, hopefully, this will be a fulfilling job."

He also named former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, a close friend who mounted a failed bid to be the Republican nominee for governor, to be his Secretary for Education."

Hm, all the way from Florida, is she? And this is what the Golden State can look forward to:

"'Donna Arduin and the Republican governor she represents have cut the budget to the bone, if not into it,' said Florida state Rep. Doug Wiles, a Democrat. 'Services are being starved.'

"Social programs also took a hit, with cuts to benefits for the poor and elderly including the elimination of funding for dental and vision plans. Poor patients who go to an emergency room will have to pay $15 each visit."

Arduin, who has worked for four Republican governors, has no qualms about the challenges she faces working with a Democrat-controlled legislature, "because the governor's team is bi-partisan.

If you go to the homepage of MyDD, they have 2 charts -- one on the top left of the page tracking O! vs McC and one on the top right with Clinton vs McC. If you click on them, it opens to a full page version of the tiny postage stamp sized graphic. It's updated constantly to reflect the 2008 Presidential Election based on the latest available state polling. You can hover your cursor over each state to see individual stats. Pretty cool.

Right now:

Obama 222
McCain 316

-----------
Clinton 295
McCain 243

-----------
Needed to win: 270

Hillary Clinton Going All In In Kentucky

by Todd Beeton @ MyDD

Hillary Clinton held an event in Frankfort, Kentucky today and, according to CNN, intends to be there tomorrow and Monday as well, perhaps event through election day on Tuesday.

More from The Swamp:

[T]here will be no head-to-head combat before Tuesday's voting deadline in Oregon's vote-by-mail primary. After dropping in for a day of made-for-TV campaigning, Clinton scrapped her Saturday plans here and headed for Kentucky, which also votes Tuesday. That leaves Barack Obama alone in this state all weekend, starting today with a rally in the Southern Oregon town of Roseburg, and continuing tomorrow in Portland and rodeo hub Pendleton.
.
Say what you will about Clinton's schedule, but know this: Some of her allies say privately it's not close to the full-court press she would need to upset Obama in Oregon.

While, as Poblano notes, both Survey USA and ARG have the race in Oregon dead even among voters who say they have already cast ballots by mail, RCP gives Barack Obama a 14 point lead there.

Clearly the Clinton campaign thinks there's no catching Obama in Oregon and instead has decided to let Tuesday play out as expected -- 1 win apiece -- but hopefully exceed expectations in Kentucky as she did in West Virginia last week, exploit the "he's ignoring Kentucky" factor and try to come out of Tuesday with a gain in the popular vote.

in case anyone missed the research on Barack's "excuse" for not campaigning in Kentucky... he was needed in the Senate to vote...

http://securingamerica.com/ccn/node/15531#comment-303320

See this thread to see how that worked out.

For all the kudos given to the brilliance of his campaign mgmt and their uber skills... why do they always have the worst excuses for stuff? Even when they write them BEFORE the fact they're weak.

The top 5 from the O! excuses list:

Um, it was a staff member who did it. I didn't know anything about it.

Um... I don't recall (meeting, saying, paying, writing, buying, visiting, talking, travelling, living, dining) with him....

Oh... well nobody knows who I am, so they vote for Hillary because she's well known.

Oh... they didn't vote for me cuz I didn't campaign there... cuz I had to vote on the Flood Insurance Modernization Act instead-- that narrowly passed... by 97 to 1....

I only voted that way because I pressed the wrong buttons by mistake.... I didn't mean it. Really. I don't recall. My staffer did it. I didn't know anything about it. Hillary is famous. I'm unknown.

Repeat.

these kinds of excuses do not meet the "Honesty

How about if Obama decided to blame Wes's
staff for whatever?? I just cannot imagine
Wes Clark approving of any such thing. I
can't see Wes being a part of such a campaign.
Or even of an administration that passes the
buck and refuses to hold itself accountable.

Iraqi Outcry After Quran Used for Target Practice by U.S. Troops

by Jonathan Turley

A week ago, Iraqi militiamen made a shocking discovery: a Quran (Koran) used for target practice, riddled with bullets, and the words “F*** yeah” scrawled inside. U.S. officials are scrambling to make amends in fear of a major backlash across Iraq.

The Fourth Division’s investigation has identified a staff sergeant in a sniper section of the 64th Armor Regiment as the primary suspect. A Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, commander of the 4th Infantry Division, did show considerable courage and tact in facing any angry mob in the area and asking for their forgiveness.

This is just a frame grab from the famous Bin Laden Cave Production Company's newest release. To show you how these uber-secret underground terra bad cavehanging dudes were very careful to put their Al Qaeda logo in the corner, in case you thought it was some imposter shadowy underground secret terra group instead. And of course they are careful about copyright issues as well. So many danged pirates out there on the tubes.

Unfortunately they did not yet provide the english subtitles. The CIA is busy making those up now. I'm sure he'll be letting us know what a witch Hillary is (and the Clinton Machine) and how much he admires her opponent. Or some such nonsense.

Oh yeah and "Boo!" -- he'll surely have some new 'threat' that only running into Maverick McCain's arms will be able to assuage and comfort.

I hate it when I go read comments on dead threads, then forget where I am and start posting... Anyways, ms in la, this ties right in to your post re: Osama bin Who popping up again. Maybe Americans are so skeered already, that the mere mention of a terrorist attack will do the trick?...

Would they dare???

...

Do you want hear Donald Rumsfeld telling a roomful of ex-brass now serving as Bush moles in the media that the only "correction" for the American people's "immaturity" -- exemplified by their giving control of Congress to the Democrats in 2006 -- is another terrorist attack on American soil? Then go to this site (via A Tiny Revolution), where, through the magic of audio, you can sit down with Rummy and the shills for a cozy, boozy lunch and settle the world's hash. There you can hear Rummy ruminate -- in his preppy whine -- on how some good old terrorist carnage would get everyone "energized" again for the sacred War on Terror.
.
Here of course Rumsfeld is merely regurgitating his long-held position on the efficacy of terror as a facilitator of one's political agenda. After all, he was one of the prime movers of the Project for a New American Century, which famously declared -- in September 2000 -- that PNAC's ambitious and aggresive plans for expanding American military dominance across the world would probably never be enacted -- unless the nation was hit by "a new Pearl Harbor" which would "catalyze" the American people into supporting the militarist agenda. And lo and behold, just one year later, the militarists got their new Pearl Harbor -- and immediately enacted almost the entire agenda laid out in PNAC's 2000 blueprint! Some people are just lucky, I guess.
.
But now they've just about run through the windfall of political capital they got from that amazingly incredible piece of luck, and are now openly yearning for that "energizing" lightning to strike again. Gosh, could they really be that lucky?

I'm afraid their old enemy boogeyman construct has grown pretty stale for them of late and they have to recognize the need for some "refreshing" and "energizing"... and that is scary.

Especially during an election season where they are not holding a good deck of cards...

Dunno.

Obama sounds like a right leaning libertarian sort, when you actually pay attention to his history and what he says.

I am still haunted by the fact that he is said to have placated conservatives at Harvard in order to become President of the Harvard LaW Review (according to E.J.Dionne). Then he goes on Fox News and says he likes the way "Republicans regulate things".

This guy's candidacy is soooo personality driven. As was Bush's.

Submitted by ms in la on May 18, 2008 - 9:29pm.

Where is he now? His financial guru is George Will's pick of the pack, he has talked about reaching across that danged aisle more times than he's said one friendly or welcoming word to progressives... he earlier claimed he wanted to 'fix' social security (but it seems today he's no longer saying that) and his health care is only sorta-kinda universal, give or take a few million. I'm hearing way too much talk about faith-based 'works' being a jim dandy solution... With all the corporate bundlers, and an unusual mix of HW, W, Reagan peeps on his advisory panel... I'm not thinking he should be travelling more right-bound.

I don't know. I know the main Republican story line paints him as so way librul ... they do that with all our candidates. They'd probably call Joe Lieberman a socialist! :)

I'm afraid if Obama dances any closer to the center he'll fall off into the republican side of the aisle altogether.

McSame's crew is going to have a heckuva time trying to distinguish him from Bush. Would not want THAT job... Phew! :)

By TChris @ Talk Left

Strong words (annistonstar.com)-- necessary words -- from Don Siegelman, who discusses (among other topics) Karl Rove's involvement (TL) with Siegelman's prosecution (TL):

The Star: Why do you believe Rove hasn't agreed to testify under oath?
.
Siegelman: He doesn't want to run the risk of lying under oath and being prosecuted for perjury. ... When Conyers invited him to testify under oath, he's dodged that, he's skated, and I think it's clear he's got something to hide. Otherwise, there is no reason why he wouldn't testify under oath.
.

Siegelman: It's much bigger than me because it's not just my case. This was not an isolated incident. This was a pernicious, political plan that was set in motion by Karl Rove to further his espoused dream of establishing a permanent Republican majority in this country, and what he left out was by any means necessary.
.
It is clear to me — and I think to those who have been investigating, and that's why they're so hot about this case — it is clear that Karl Rove abused his power and misused the Department of Justice as a political tool to win elections, and that is something that would happen in a police state. That is something that we might have read about in history books as happening in Russia, but it is not something that should be allowed to happen in the United States of America. And Congress, and I believe John Conyers, clearly sees this as a wrongful action against democracy in this country, and he wants to make a statement that is clear and unequivocal that this kind of abuse of power is not going to be tolerated under any administration whether it's a Democratic administration or a Republican administration.
.
We have got to regain control over our system of justice, and it's got to be put back in order, and not allowed ever to be used in this manner again.
.
That's why I've been working not just on my legal appeal, but on an appeal to the United States Congress to keep digging in and fighting for the truth.

I wouldn't feel too bad tho. I suspect the kangaroos would have been killed anyway. If anything, it's probably better when as much of the carcus as possible is put to use. Not that I would want to own one. I don't wear or otherwise use the skins of animals I don't eat.

Which is why I would have no particular problem with eating mountain oysters. No worse than eating any other cattle organ, like liver. Yumm.

When Obama supporting bloggers like Aravosis say that Clinton should withdraw from the race for the good of the party, they mean she should stop reminding them that fifteen million Democrats don't think Barack Obama is as wonderful as they think he is.

All those Democratic votes for Hillary force them to consider the possibility that they're not as smart and as hip and as on to a sure thing as their vanity has been assuring them they are.

If my guy is as wonderful is I think he is, then why doesn't everybody else know it? Why hasn't he just run away with the nomination? Can it be that my guy isn't that wonderful? Can it be that I'm not as smart and as hip and as on to a sure thing as I know I must be? Can it be that I'm....gulp...wrong?

NO WAY!

It must be something else.

It must be a trick.

It must be that those fifteen million people voting for Hillary are crazy or stupid or racist or otherwise not as smart and hip and cool as I am.

Otherwise they would know what I know.

Otherwise they would see what I see.

They would know how wonderful my wonderful candidate is.

They would see how awful their awful candidate is.

They wouldn't vote for that horrible, horrible woman then.

And since if they did know what I know and did see what I see they wouldn't vote for that horrible, horrible woman, then their votes are the products of a giant con. They are the votes of suckers and chumps. The votes of suckers and chumps shouldn't count. They don't count! The votes of fifteen million suckers and chumps---fifteen million racist and stupid suckers and chumps---are NOT as important, are not as real, as the votes of sixteen million geniuses and hipsters like me.

Hillary has no real support.

Instead of McCain, it could have been Romney, Guiliani, Huckabee, Paul, Thompson or Hunter. McCain is probably the most reasonable of the lot, which isn't saying much.

We're electing the President of the United States, not some g.d. prom king.

News briefing to be held May 22 - regarding Obama's Illinois record.

Barack Obama's alleged socialist and communist connections will be the highlight of a planned news conference to be held in Washington in late May.

Veteran conservative journalist and media critic Cliff Kincaid says the news briefing scheduled for May 22 is not designed to support or oppose any one presidential candidate, but rather to shed light on parts of Senator Obama's (D-Illinois) past that the mainstream news media has chosen to ignore.

I thought all this information was to be held back until it is certain he will be the nominee. Why would these people put the information out now, when they know Hillary has a better chance of beating McCain?

Totally. Personality. Driven.

Universal health care use to be a "biggy", but now, not so much; because O has very little real interest in the issue.

We all made fun of Bush's social security tour of the country; but now that O kind of agrees with "W", it's all okay.

I am still wondering how Clarkies who support Obama, feel about the fact that the Obama camp is discouraging people from contributing to VoteVets.

And why do "Obama/Clarkies" prefer McPeak to Clark?
I always come back to McPeak versus Clark. LOL
That seems like such a no-brainer!

and agree!

McPeak, oh puhleeeze. Puhleeeze.

He's got to do better than that for his General's.
They need to give McPeak back to Bush and do some sort of a trade-in... get something a little more "new kind of politics"!! LOL

The VoteVets thing is troubling- I didn't know that.

I usually am not a voter who goes by the personal issues when deciding (what would work best for me and my family?) but when it comes to Social Security I make a teeny exception (she says after having paid in huge sums over the past near 40 yrs) I of course started working as a child... Before Child Labor laws... Heh. :) I know those funds have gone to help grandma's and parents retiring but I really always thought I'd get something back for it. Some years it was realllly a lot of money!

I still would like to retire one day...

Shut The Freud Up Productions has produced a new video. Check out our new blog:

http://shutthefreudup.blogspot.com

"DNC: Fractured Fairly Tales":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvuMDmqwwbI

is our (IndyRobin and GeekLove) latest video from "Shut the Freud Up" Productions.

Our last video "Mad as Hell":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcdnlNZg2iM

was seen by over 165,000 people. It was written about in Salon (twice), Newsday, was mentioned by the New York Times, and was prominently featured on the front page of most blogs supportive of Hillary Clinton.

We need your help to bring the same attention to this video. It is different from the first, but nonetheless, equally important. "Mad As Hell" exposed the sexism in the MSM. "DNC: Fractured Fairly Tales" exposes the DNC for who they really are.

Please pass this along to everyone you know. When you do, please ask everyone to go directly to YouTube and recommend it, rate it as their favorite video, and leave a comment. We are counting on you to help us with the same dedication, commitment and attention you gave to our last video.

Thanks so much for your support. Our goal is the same as yours: to help elect Hillary Rodham-Clinton as President of the United States. She has never stopped working for us, so let's not stop working for her.

With much appreciation,

The youngsters focused on "hope" and "change" don't really know that. They don't really know where he stand on the issues so much as he is "transformational." Now he's going to move to the center to get the people he needs to win, ie even more Indies and Republicans. Actually he's in the center or to the right as you say, but now it's going to be more visible.

when you have a chorus that chants the hopey changey song and the lyrics convince you No No... he's not a DC "insider" and the whole "ground up" grassrootsy image is seeded and sprinkled with clockwork regularity ... who wouldn't want to believe that story?

I think Bill Clinton hit the nail on its head with his "fairy tale" comment about the Iraq war stance, and that's why it immediately got morphed into racism to stop it (screeeech!) in its intuitive little tracks --lest it catch on...

There is a whole lot of fairy tale in this campaign, but you know-- that's what campaigns do in elections. They fabricate the stuff that sells the product best, and then artfully, or not so artfully, weave it all together in a pleasing design and stick it in the window to sell. It's not an altogether unattractive fairy tale... but there's a lot of dust in there to see through.

Devil in a pantsuit or the demonization of Hillary Clinton

Media portrayal of Hillary Clinton evokes an old and vicious cultural stereotype: Female monster

Julia Keller | CULTURAL CRITIC

ChiTrib

When the doctor checks to see if the patient is still breathing, it's disgust, not compassion, that leaks out between his syllables: "You couldn't kill her with an ax," he sneers.

That patient—the wide-hipped, unwieldy woman at the heart of Dorothy Parker's 1929 short story "Big Blonde"—is a familiar image in books, films, songs, comic books, TV series, video games and, now, politics: The woman as monster. The over-large, over-ambitious, overbearing creature who irritates everybody, the death-defying witch who just won't go away—and who therefore must be destroyed.

She's a vampire, a zombie, an alien, a werewolf, a psychopath, a serial killer. She's Alex, the Glenn Close character in "Fatal Attraction" (1987), who ... keeps ... on ... coming. She's the looming, clutching, stifling mother or wife or girlfriend in a Philip Roth novel. (Which novel? Take your pick.) She's the eerie, outlandish creature in the Sylvia Plath poem "Lady Lazarus" (1965), who proclaims, "Out of the ash / I rise with my red hair / And I eat men like air." She's the vengeful giantess in the 1958 film "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman."

And to judge from the media commentary about the first woman to get anywhere close to a major party's presidential nomination, she is Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton.

of the entire Tribune Company. Sam Zell. Major Republican contributor, former owner of Clear Channel. Publicly refers to Hillary Clinton as the 'C-word'... four letters... In front of the press. No qualms, no shame.

His favorite newspaper columnist is Charles Krauthammer. His favorite Pres candidate is Barack Obama. Get used to seeing that kind of dichotomy.

The Chi Trib, a conservative paper, endorsement of Obama states one of their main reasons for choosing Sen O!... he plays nice with Republicans.

-----------------------------------

From The Tribune Endorsement:

Yes, he is vilified by less-secure Democrats for acknowledging Ronald Reagan was a transformative president who "put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it." Our takeaway: Obama has the confidence to speak truth. (cough, cough)

This endorsement is a paradox. We're urging votes for a candidate whose political views we often disagree with.

[...]

A Tribune profile last May labeled his eight years in Springfield as "a study in complexity, caution and calculation. In the minority party for all but his final two years in the Statehouse, he tempered a progressive agenda with a cold dash of realism, often forging consensus with conservative Republicans when other liberals wanted to crusade."

(ms notes- just what we need! Gotta stop those dangerous 'liberal crusaders' from running wild!)

[...]

As a result, many Republicans in Illinois have warm words for Barack Obama.

Well good. Just what we seek. Warm worded republicans.

That alone will prevent me from ever voting for him.

"It's natural to wonder whether Obama approves of the death-haunted images that surround his opponent like a phalanx of vultures. Surely he doesn't. He is an intelligent, sensitive, enlightened man whose life has been enriched, as he frequently acknowledges, by the presence of strong women, most notably his late mother and his wife. I wish, therefore, that he would publicly condemn the trend of evoking death and destruction when it comes to Clinton. Perhaps, someday, he will."

perhaps it's time for hiatus. Fortunately for you, this blog is not a Kos equivalent. Kos's solution to dissent is to kick posters off permanently.

The hardest thing to do is to put CCN members on some 'less than full' status, but attacking General Clark on other blogs is really over the top. Villifying other posters here is a blatant attempt to disrupt the conversation. Other Obama supporters manage to have civil discussions -- you make no attempt to do so.

Rather than removing your posting privileges altogether, I am placing your account (s) on 'moderated' status. That is, I will have to 'manually' approve any comment or blog post. Those that remain civil (even when disagreeing with another poster) will be 'approved'. Personal attacks on other posters or attacks on General Clark's integrity will not.

his political position is embarrassing to many people who admire him; delusion is a term of endearment - somehow saying anything else might not be as mild or serve as constructive criticism for his attachment to HRC by praising her mean campaign

being proud of her for it - makes a lot of Wes observers scratch their heads and wish he hadn't;  had she not taken such Rovian tactics it would not have made Wes vulnerable to questions about how it reflects on him;

You know the story. Self made. Rhodes scholar. Humble background. One of the most interesting biographies in American history. To me, a face that should have been added to Mt. Rushmore.

What have you done besides peck & unravel - have you, while blogging here these years, once jumped a plane at a moment's notice to come to the aid of a friend or ally? Taken time from your family & concerns to endlessly stump for this candidate or that, try to reform the Democratic party losing mentality into a full service party? Have newsrooms & networks called on you for your expertise on terrorism, international events, military matters, political upheaval, electoral politics or even... computer security? Have you worked with James Lee Witt? Have you?

No. You typed. Just as we have.

Get back, Jack.

True believer? Did you miss... the fact that along with Powell, WKC helped write America's national security strategy after the Cold War- and that the PNACers ran it seriously amok? Have you any idea of the length, or breadth of his service? His integrity? His character?

As far as Hillary Clinton, I think there has been enough vilification to fill several oceans about a woman who essentially, has also tried in her way to be a faithful servant to a Democratic party so lost in dreams of it's own grandeur  (depsite being composed mostly of absolute non-starters once in office!) & so far divorced from reality that even at this moment a post-Bush democratic presidency slips ever further out of reach on the rocks of electoral reality just because somebody lit up an applause sign.
