VIDEO: Linda Douglass of the Obama campaign threw Gen. Clark under the bus!

Wesley Clark
Hello Everyone:
Here is the Morning Joe video link from July 2 where Linda Douglass, who was officially representing the Obama campaign, threw Gen. Clark under the bus in my opinion:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25494201#25494201 (07:41)
Obama will not rule out nuclear power
July 2: According to his senior adviser, Linda Douglass, Barack Obama has not ruled out the safe use of nuclear power in curbing our addiction to oil, but will not be instituting offshore oil drilling.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25494201#25494201 (07:41)
All of the dialogue about Gen. Clark took place right at the beginning of the video within just the first minute of it so it does not take very long at all to watch.
Mika Brzezinski asked Linda Douglass: "Wes Clark. John McCain is saying that Barack Obama should cut him loose. Is your candidate gonna do so?"
Linda Douglass replied to that question by saying: "Well I mean the question is what does cutting him loose mean? I mean, he's not a member of the campaign. He doesn't have any official role in the campaign. Senator Obama said that he rejected, uh, what he said about John McCain. There's not much more that Senator Obama can do about, you know, General Clark, who's certainly expressed his own opinion on cable several times over and over again, but he's not part of the campaign. I don't know quite how you cut loose somebody who's not really part of the campaign."
Pat Buchanan then said "so he's loose," then both Mika Brzezinski and Linda Douglass said "running loose," and they were all laughing about it which I thought was making a mockery of the situation!
Make no mistake about it that Linda Douglass speaks for the Obama campaign in an official capacity:

Linda Douglass Joins The Obama Campaign
21 May 2008 11:50 am
"Linda Douglass, an award-winning television and print journalist who currently serves as a contributing editor to National Journal, will join Barack Obama's presidential campaign as a senior strategist and as a senior campaign spokesperson on the roadshow, a newly created position.
Douglass confirmed her new position when I walked up to the ninth floor, knocked on her door, and asked her about it. She informed National Journal President Suzanne Clark this morning of her impending departure..."
I did not appreciate it when CNN reported that Obama "rejects yesterday's statement by Gen. Clark:"

Obama responds to attacks on his patriotism
"As he's said many times before, Sen. Obama honors and respects Sen. McCain's service, and of course he rejects yesterday's statement by Gen. Clark," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said..."
I also did not appreciate Obama calling Gen. Clark's comments "Inartful" when they were true in their context and when Gen. Clark was trying to help Obama:

Obama On Clark's Remarks: "Inartful"
ZANESVILLE, OH – “Inartful” was the word Barack Obama used today to characterize remarks Gen. Wes Clark made over the last few days about John McCain’s military service..."
My two conclusions about this issue are the following:
1) Gen. Clark's supporters should definitely be aware of what the Obama campaign is saying about Gen. Clark in an official capacity. I personally think that the Obama campaign threw Gen. Clark under the bus but I will leave that conclusion up to each person to decide for themselves. However at minimum, Obama and his campaign did not stand up for Gen. Clark and defend him when they should have and they ran away from him out of political convenience for the moment when Gen. Clark was going out of his way trying to do Obama a favor!
2) Once we are aware of what was said about Gen. Clark by Obama and by his campaign, I think that if anyone wants to support Obama, then that is fine. However if anyone does not want to support Obama, then I think that is also fine. Each person has to follow their own conscience about that and I completely agree with Kelly Flinn that everyone here can agree on supporting one or more of the local WesPAC candidates who Gen. Clark has endorsed even if they disagree on whether or not to support Obama:

The bottom line in my opinion is that each person needs to think about this issue, come to their own conclusion about it, and then NOT criticize anyone else here if they come to a different conclusion about it. That is how I think everyone here can find common ground and get along with each other even if there are some different opinions on the issue of whether or not to support Obama!

and to other spineless Democrats that they need to stand up for Gen. Clark, not run away from him out of political convenience for the moment when what he said was right in its proper context, and that they need to defend him from the many baseless attacks that are happening to him right now:

Full Petition Text:
General Clark,
We the undersigned thank you for speaking up forcefully and honestly about what it takes to lead this nation, and the kind of judgment we must look for. You were right to say that Senator McCain has not shown good judgment, despite his extraordinary service to America. Just in the past few years:
- Senator McCain's service and experience, both as a POW and as a Senator apparently hasn't infused him with a dose of good judgment.
- Senator McCain's experience hasn't led him to realize that the war in Iraq and it's continuance has empowered and emboldened Iran, and destabilized the region.
- Senator McCain's experience hasn't caused him to recognize that we're losing ground in Afghanistan, and Osama bin Laden is still out there, plotting.
- Senator McCain's experience didn't lead him to support the 21st Century GI Bill -- he opposed it. It didn't even make him feel the need to get back to Washington to vote on this -- one of the most important veterans' bills this Congress. He twice skipped votes on the GI Bill, to fundraise.
- Senator McCain's experience didn't help him empathize with troops are overstretched and overdeployed, when he voted against the bipartisan Webb-Hagel "Dwell Time Amendment," which would have given troops as much time at home as in the field.
We all honor Senator McCain's service, as you said you do. But that does not mean that on matters of security, the military, and veterans that he is beyond reproach. Nor does it mean that his service trumps the poor judgment he has shown in some of the most important issues of our time.
Do not back down, and keep treating the American people like adults who can handle a real, honest, and blunt debate in these important times.

I was preparing this for a post I made earlier and didn't realize that this blog had gone up:
LINDA DOUGLASS: "What does cutting him loose mean? I mean he's not a member of the campaign, he doesn't have any official role in the campaign...
PAT BUCHANAN: He's loose
LINDA DOUGLASS: ...Senator Obama said he rejected what he said about John McCain, there's not much more that Senator Obama can do about you know General Clark who has certainly expressed his own opinion on cable several times over and over and over again. but he's not part of the campaign, I don't know quite how you cut loose somebody who's not really part of the campaign.
PAT BUCHANAN: So he's loose, OK
MIKA: He's loose, ha ha, running loose, Go ahead Pat
LINDA DOUGLAS: Running loose, yes, yes, ha ha
MIKA: Yeah, yeah, WOW

....he has been a great disappointment so far....and who knows what else is to come.
One of these says, we will get a fighting Democrat in the Oval Office. I may not live to see it but hopefully my grandchildren will.

and I watched BO's "Press Conference" on Iraq this afternoon. What a disappointment. :(
This man should stay as far away from that topic as he can possibly get. Aside from the fact that he opposed it way back when, he is not able to articulate on military matters at all. Actually, without a script, he doesn't articulate well when it comes to most anything.
Ooops......my bad.

I'm going to be interested in seeing what Bob Schieffer has to say on Face the Nation this coming Sunday about Sen. Obama calling the wording of his question inartful.
As for the Linda Douglass interview, I couldn't help but notice how, after they all laughed at Gen. Clark, she mentioned how "McCain served his country honorably and admirably and so has Sen. Obama". Then, she totally forgot about how Gen. Clark has done so, as well. So, she laughs at him and then disregards his service. What a disappointment she is in how she treats one of her fellow Democrats who has worked so hard and done so much for the Democratic Party. Even Sen. Obama hasn't been so cruel and disrespectful. I think she should have left things where Sen. Obama was trying to leave it, as not Swiftboating and not worth all this fuss.

All those poor suckers who gave him blind adoration, voted for him and gave him their hard earned cash are going to realize they've been used.
If I were Wes, I'd stick to talking foreign policy and military matters and not agree to talk presidential politics at all, neither candidate is deserving.
General Clark appeared on face the nation on his own. Nothing was coordinated with the Obama campaign. Clearly from the Obama spokespeople it is clear they disagree and disavow General Clark's remarks. You guys know I don't post often but I wanted to say that.

I thought as much.
I would only like to add...
Shame on them
“No self respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her self.” - Susan B. Anthony, 1872
but some continued to insist that there were various and sundry schemes in the works. Nothing like a clear statement.
Thank you Catherine.

The more I read this stuff, the angrier I get. These people are lower than low. Our General is so much better than these clowns.

I think General Clark should disavow Obama. But I guess he's too classy to do that.
We learn. We change. That's progress. If we don't do that, well, we're GWB.
"Anti-war" Obama defends pro-war McCaine, but can't stand up for the highest ranking military man who was standing up for him. The military man who happened to be AGAINST this f&%@*n war.
The evil irony of it all!
Ha! I bet a lot of us have been cut loose from Obama as well. I was a wait and see person, looking for something that would give me a reason to support this Republicanin in disguise. That something would have been Wes being given a part in what is coming down the way. Or at the very least, a show of respect?
Didn't Obama say in his "patriotism" speech, we should all respect those in the military who have sacrificed for this country? Hellooo, Obama... You are also describing General Clark!
My vote is my own now, Bastards.

The more and more I look at how this has developed, I think General Clark and Obama are in communications with one another. That being said, I really don't like to see Clark's integrity, repuatation and good sense being disrespected by Obama reps and the msm. But, I also have to say, for the most part, I have been so happy with the response of support for General Clark, not only from Clark supporters, but from Obama supporters alike. AND I have even seen some very encouraging articles written - not by the msm, of course - that make me think General Clark is going to come out of this more than alright.
BUT, what I really came on here to say today, was that whem I came home and saw the news that Obama had announced he may revise the timeline of troop withdrawal, I thought, "Hmm, sounds like somebody may have been talking to certain General we know. And if that somebody were looking to have that general on his team in an official capacity somewhere in the future, he'd probably want to make clarifications NOW that would jibe with the general's very well thought out and safe exit strategy for our troops."
So I am not SURE what game is being played, but I do know that General Clark did the Democratic Party and Obama a HUGE favor by putting out in the mainstream the IDEA that POW status does not translate into presidential qualifications or judgement.
I am very protective of General Clark, just as I think all of his ardent supporters are, and I was steaming mad at the beginning of this week. But as the week wore on I remembered that General Clark is NOBODY's dummy. And he wouldn't allow himself - or someone else - to play him for the fool. That's just not how he rolls.
I agree, we should continue to support his statements by supporting people like Jon Stoltz and his petition and definately writing into the editors of our paper and calling into tv and radio talk shows. But I will not think of General Clark as a victim. He put his cards on the table - the only thing is I think he has a couple more in his hand, and they're probably aces.

ha, I saw that Catherine had written that, after i made the comment. But I still don't think that necessarly invalidates everything i just said. I'll admit, I prefer my world with the glass 9/8 full. But I'll also admit I have a hard time taking anything just at face value. There's ALWAYS more to the story ... And this story, no doubt, has many sides.
I don't want to rustle anyone's feathers. I'm a frequent reader, but seldom a participant, of the blog and a loonng time supporter of Wes (July 2003). I have a picture of Wes, myself and my children sitting on my desk looking at me right now. I follow news of him and defend him and talk him up whenever I can. To that end, I find it more productive to search out the positive rather than dwell on the glaring negatives.
I'm not saying I'm right. I was just rooting around for some answers and I found a happy place to dwell for a moment today.
you can't turn a sow's ear into a purse (or whatever that saying is) no matter how hard you try. Have a happy 4th and don't forget to toss some $$ into this weekend's WesPac fundraiser to show support for Wes.

Maybe Phyl should put "Fundraiser" in her title to make it more clear?

I TOTALLY don't know that saying?
I donate when I can, which is far less than I would like since we're a family of five living on one blue collar income in a growing recession. . . but I do try to do other things to promote Clark's causes.
I will still seek to embrace the positive and "soldier" on - i've learned that trait from the master of it, Gen Clark!
Have a good fourth all. And chins up! There could be a silver lining in the clouds, you never know . . .

between and should be enjoyed when found.
Thanks for participating in the conversation -- we need fresh points of view to keep us from getting too wrapped up in ourselves:)

And I hope all the Clarkies can find a happy place for the fourth and beyond! We all deserve it for supporting - in whatever way we can - a man who has proven yet again to be the most ethical, strong, just and intelligent public figure i have ever known!
