while the circus is in town in Denver. With the way nominees are preselected ahead of time by both parties, a nominating convention is becoming somewhat of an anachronism. Perhaps the main reason to preserve conventions is the potential bump in the polls.

I heard the same thing, DB but I thought I read that they would go as far as the NY delegation then suspend and she'd release her delegates to him. Kind of like the primaries - doesn't seem fair to those delegates that come in the latter states. They paid a lot of money to travel to Denver to cast their votes for HRC.

Submitted by Barry_NJ on August 27, 2008 - 6:56am.

The vote will not be suspended, do that and there's no nominee!

If this is done the New York delegation will move to have Obama nominated by acclamation.  No delegates will be released but you're right all delegates from states after New York will not cast their votes - both Clinton and Obama delegates. However some Clinton supporters, especially from NY, seem to like this idea.

According to what I heard the analysts say when the roll call got to NY, "Hillary Clinton asks to suspend the roll call, and Barack Obama is nominated by acclamation."

So, does this mean we don't have BO as the party nominee? Did he ever reach the number of delegates he needeed to be officially selected?

You need to pay attention, you're as bad as some of my students. :)

Clinton included in her motion that all votes would be counted. But that wasn't necessary, the convention nominated him by acclamation. That means its a done deal and he was officially nominated.

So it's going into the end of the 8th inning, and the Phillies are up 5 to nothing. I leaned over to my mom, Don't worry, they still have one more inning. LA can make up those 5 runs, you watch.

Top of the ninth, bap! one runner on base.. Bap again! Two on..

LA big hitter dude comes up to the plate.. BALL! BALL!! couple fouls.. and then STRIKE 3!

Phils win. 5-0. Ending my lifelong Phillies game losing streak.

At worst, they will ALL vote in the morning but not using a live roll call vote. Then they will allow a few token states to "cast their votes". Some would be for Hillary and others for Barack. Then they would give the tally. It would still be the vote tally from ALL the states.

Hillary and the Democrats are trying to diminish the mayhem that could happen if some of her delegates push things.

I personally think they should let the roll call go as it normally does. I have heard the same things from many Obama supporters at Dkos and MyDD.

The most electric moment of the convention so far: Hillary Clinton.

Michelle Obama, who has been shown all night long laughing and animated, is clapping but with the tightest mouth I've seen on her, as if she's totally nervous. She's constantly pursing her lips. Relax, Michelle, Hillary's on your side now.

(We keep crashing, back up site here.)

Update: She hit it out of the park. Great speech. She also outlined all the Democratic values. Not a hint of bitterness. She projects the voice of experience and leadership with supreme confidence and credibility. The consummate Democrat.

What a speech! In that moment, at that time, just an unbelievable speech. If you saw it, there is nothing I can write that can do it justice.

My friends, it is time to take back the country we love. And whether you voted for me or you voted for Barack, the time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose.

(APPLAUSE)

We are on the same team. And none of us can afford to sit on the sidelines. This is a fight for the future, and it's a fight we must win together.

(APPLAUSE)

I haven't spent the past 35 years in the trenches, advocating for children, campaigning for universal health care, helping parents balance work and family, and fighting for women's rights here at home and around the world...

(APPLAUSE)

... to see another Republican in the White House squander our promise of a country that really fulfills the hopes of our people. And you haven't worked so hard over the last 18 months or endured the last eight years to suffer through more failed leadership.

(APPLAUSE)

No way, no how, no McCain.

(APPLAUSE)

Barack Obama is my candidate, and he must be our president.

(APPLAUSE)

Tonight, I ask you to remember what a presidential election is really about. When the polls have closed and the ads are finally off the air, it comes down to you, the American people, and your lives, and your children's futures.

(snip)

I will always remember the single mom who had adopted two kids with autism. She didn't have any health insurance, and she discovered she had cancer. But she greeted me with her bald head, painted with my name on it, and asked me to fight for health care for her and her children.

(APPLAUSE)

I will always remember the young man in a Marine Corps T-shirt who waited months for medical care. And he said to me, "Take care of my buddies. A lot of them are still over there. And then will you please take care of me?"

And I will always remember the young boy who told me his mom worked for the minimum wage, that her employer had cut her hours. He said he just didn't know what his family was going to do.

(snip)

I want you -- I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me, or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him?

Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids?

Were you in it for that young boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage?

Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?

We need leaders once again who can tap into that special blend of American confidence and optimism that has enabled generations before us to meet our toughest challenges, leaders who can help us show ourselves and the world that with our ingenuity, creativity, and innovative spirit, there are no limits to what is possible in America.

(APPLAUSE)

Now, this will not be easy. Progress never is. But it will be impossible if we don't fight to put a Democrat back into the White House.

Wonder if he'll pick Carly Fiorina? Could be interesting if he tries to reinforce his "maverick" reputation by going totally outside the "pick a politician" norm and also by choosing a woman and going after disaffected Hillary voters.

"Carly Fiorina - she wrecked HP, now watch what she does to VP"

Submitted by Defoliate Bush on August 27, 2008 - 1:20am.

HP is far from 'wrecked'

When Fiorina was asked by the Board of Directors to step down in 2005, the company stated that Fiorina had put in place “a plan that has given HP the capabilities to compete and win" and that HP "look[ed] forward to accelerating execution of the company's strategy

This seems to be validated as HP stock price (HPQ) today is very near its all-time high despite the general market downturn the past 9 months.

Also, as vice-president at AT&T in 1996, she directed the strategy and orchestrated the initial public offering (IPO) of Lucent, the most successful IPO in U.S. history until then

However, I DON"T like the spying incident she was involved with/approved while at HP nor her cavalier attitude about outsourcing American tech jobs.

Submitted by Patrick McKinnion on August 27, 2008 - 1:27am.

There was cheering when she was ousted, and her time as HP CEO was marked with near universal decline in morale thoughout the company.

There's a lot of HP workers who wouldn't pee on her if she was on fire

Submitted by Defoliate Bush on August 27, 2008 - 2:41am.

Stock price is a pretty brutal/unbiased evaluation of where a company is at...and it is saying pretty good

Her time was marked by a lot of acquisitions and associated job disruptions and I'm sure employees didn't like some of the outsourcing either (or her firing something like 7,000 employees with another 15,000 soon after she left)

Perhaps those employees would have preferred to work at Sun Microsystems (a direct competitor of HP) whose stock price has gone from $250 down to $9?

From:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/management/2006-10-15-fiorina-advice_x.htm

Q: Most reports were that morale at HP was low when you left. Doesn't that fall on the leader?

A: Anecdotal reports about company morale are misleading because people talk to the people they know. To understand the employees' state of mind, you have to survey them scientifically and systematically over time. We did that.

When I left, the employees were on the same page. Was everyone delighted with everything? Of course not. Change by its nature creates resistance, conflict and, in some cases, hostility. When you are asked to transform a tradition-bound company like HP, you're going to upset some people. It required a merger. It required the layoff of tens of thousands of people. You can't make all the people happy all the time. A leader's job is to motivate people to do things that they initially resist.

I have some first hand knowledge of her tenure.

She was big on buzzwords like "synergy" etc.
The HP and Compaq merger had the synergy of anchor falling off the back of a ship.

She gutted the company of some of the finest engineering talent in the country. "Poised for growth' was another one of her famous lines. The only proplem is that you can't grow when all you are doing is down sizing.
She was big on "core competencies", The joke was she made our core competency 'downsizing". The company fundamentals were fine and survivied despite her hatchet.

During the height of her hatchet work she purchased two Gulf Stream executive jets for $56 million dollars. The joke was that ash trays were full on the old one. She also wanted the board to pay to have her yacht transported from the east coast to the west.

She reaped hideous sums of money and got a hideousely large golden parchute when the board gave her the boot. I missed the blessed event by a couple of weeks but I know they were literally playing the Wicked Witch is Dead in cubicles the day she got the Ax. She is very intelligent, eloquent. and attractive for that matter but she is a poster child for what is wrong with corporate America.

The word is pea-picking (or pickin' if you prefer). As in country folk who pick peas (and other produce) for a living.

If you want to belittle people (so good for unity, don't ya know), you might at least use google or dictionary.com to do it right.

Why are winners so bitter and mean?
