GOP strategist Ed Rollins explained the selfishness of many House Republicans!

Hello Everyone:

It is being reported that "A revolt among House Republicans appears to have emerged as the key stumbling block" to achieving a serious bipartisan economic bailout agreement:

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- "President Bush was unable to seal a deal between Republicans and Democrats on his $700 billion mortgage rescue plan, officials said. "It was not a negotiating session," said House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer. The two presidential candidates, Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barak Obama, attended the meeting but left the White House without talking to reporters. A revolt among House Republicans appears to have emerged as the key stumbling block. Hoyer said that some plans have recently been put on the table that even Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson hasn't seen. "On our side, there is a consensus on how to go forward, we'll have to see if that consensus can grow," Hoyer said. It was up to Bush to talk to Republicans, he added."

Republican strategist Ed Rollins explained why this is the case with these House Republicans as a panel guest on CNN Lou Dobbs yesterday. Their reasons seem to be very selfishly motivated in my opinion:

LOU DOBBS TONIGHT

The Wall Street Bailout Plan; Economic Mess; New Hope for America

Aired September 25, 2008 - 19:00 ET

LOU DOBBS, HOST: "Ed? Should there be a bailout?

ED ROLLINS, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: I think there's a serious question about that, and it's not John McCain. It's the House Republicans. And the House Republicans who basically, most of them, sit in safe seats and don't think they -- think they spent way more money than they should have and feel no obligation to this president, who's going out the door in 116 days. Don't know Paulson. He doesn't know how to negotiate with them.

And all of a sudden they have this crisis in which, for the next two or three terms, they're going to be forced to give up everything else that they had because of this bailout for a bunch of people on Wall Street..."

Ed Rollins further explained why this is the case with House Republicans as a panel guest on CNN Anderson Cooper 360 later on that day yesterday and he answered "yes, they're thinking about themselves" to this key question from Anderson Cooper about the House Republicans and their selfishness "They're thinking about party right now, not country? Is that what you're thinking?"

ANDERSON COOPER 360 DEGREES

Federal Bailout Deal Threatened; Nation's Largest S&L Fails

Aired September 25, 2008 - 22:00 ET

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: "Ed Rollins, if House Republicans are not in that meeting, what's the point of that meeting?

ED ROLLINS, CNN SENIOR POLITICAL CONTRIBUTOR: If they're not in the meeting, it's not going to happen.

I mean, the bottom line is that this is a four-legged stool. The House Republicans are a different breed. And...

COOPER: What is going on with them? What is happening?

ROLLINS: Well, my sense is, they feel that Bush had led them down -- astray, that he's gone in 116 days. They don't care about anybody in the Treasury Department. They have no relationship there.

COOPER: Do they care about anything else -- and I include Democratic congressmen in this as well -- anybody but getting reelected? They're all up for reelected.

ROLLINS: They're all going to get reelected. They're all in safe districts. The ones who are going to lose seats are going to be open seats. Maybe one or two of them lose.

At the end of the day, there's a lot of people thinking about, how do we rebuild the party? And do we want to rebuild this party with John McCain, who is always kind of questionable on the basic facts of fiscal control, all the rest of it, immigration? And I think, to a certain extent, this 110, 115 members of this study group are saying, here's the time to draw the line in the sand.

COOPER: It is pretty scary stuff, though. They're thinking about party right now, not country? Is that what you're thinking?

ROLLINS: I think they're thinking about -- yes, they're thinking about themselves.

I think they don't think the threat is quite as great as a lot of other people do..."

Later in this discussion, Paul Begala called Bush "a high-functioning moron" and he said that is how both parties in Congress treat him. I would agree with that analysis which explains Bush's ineffectiveness:

COOPER: "I have got to tell you, watching the president last night give that speech, it was like watching him in Jackson Square in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I mean, he did not seem to be there....

PAUL BEGALA, CNN POLITICAL ANALYST: I'm going to get in trouble. He is a high-functioning moron, and that is what Congress treats him as, both parties. They didn't pay any attention to him today. They had a huge fight in the Cabinet Room..."

Republican strategist Ed Rollins in my opinion is someone who you may disagree with on some issues but I have always known him to be a pretty straight shooter when it comes to giving his analysis about something. That is why I think he was willing to publicly say what he did about those House Republicans!

People need to very clearly understand that it is mainly many of the House Republicans and their selfish attitude which are getting in the way of achieving a serious bipartisan economic agreement right now!

AMERICAN MORNING

Bailout Deal Stalls; Washington Mutual Goes Belly-Up; Presidential Debate in Limbo; What the Bailout's Worth Can Buy

Aired September 26, 2008 - 07:00 ET

JOHN ROBERTS, CNN ANCHOR: "And talks will resume again this morning on an economic bailout package. Discussions collapsed yesterday when Republicans appeared to withdraw their support for the administration's plan.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SEN. RICHARD SHELBY (R), ALABAMA: He won't be the president of the United States four months from now. Paulson won't be secretary of the treasury, and I don't know how long Bernanke will be at the Fed. But I can tell you this, I wouldn't support any plan like that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ROBERTS: That was part of my interview last night with Republican Senator Richard Shelby who's the ranking member of the Banking Committee. Joining me to discuss the politics surrounding the plan, Republican strategist and CNN contributor Ed Rollins and Democratic strategist Lisa Caputo.

Good morning to both of you.

ED ROLLINS, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: Good morning.

ROBERTS: Ed, I know it was a short turnaround for you. Well, let me ask you about this question since, you know, you're a tried and true Republican, 49-state victory 1984 for Ronald Reagan. Republicans here almost in full-scale revolt against this administration.

ROLLINS: This administration -- this isn't a lame duck administration, this is a dead duck administration. And there's a lot of resentment against this president who many Republicans think took us over the cliff. Equally as important, Paulson has no relationship there and I think they're going back to their ideology. And I think to a certain extent, this is about the future of our party and the House Republicans. Conservatives always had a very strong opinion about that direction..."

The following is for information purposes only:

In Kansas City, I asked a prominent former banker his oponion of the financial crisis, and how it should be handled. He thinks the Federal Government should place the failing organizations (AIG, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, etc)
into receivorship, and regulate them that way. He didn't think complete ownership by the government was really necessary. He felt that the Treasury and Fed had panicked.
He also acknowledged that the cost of this approach, while still very expensive, would be on a fraction of what Paulson, et al, are proposing.

I don't know if he is right or wrong on this issue, although my initial instinct is that an intermediate response might the right way to go.
I offer this for the sake of feedback, civil discussion, etc.
