General Clark and Tim Kaine

Firsthand Accounts
As most of you know, General Clark has spent yesterday and today in Virginia, campaigning with Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine in his race to become Virginia's next governor.
I'm sure we'll hear plenty more from folks who have been at some of the events -- but in the meantime, here's a picture from Tuesday night!
"(Wes Clark) is probably the most intelligent officer I ever served with," McCaffrey said. "He has great integrity, sound judgment and great kindness in dealing with people. He is a public servant of exceptional character and skill." -- General Barry McCaffrey
1. Show up * 2. Pay attention * 3. Speak your truth, and * 4. Don\'t be attached to outcome -- Angeles Arrien

Thanks Brent!!

Looks like our General is making the difference in Virginia! WAY TO GO WES!
Brent, thanks for the pic! Look forward to the report!
He has been here indeed! Would just love to hear more about the visit. Wanted to be where he was so badly. He couldn't have come at a better time Tim needs him. We all need him. Mary Jo A Wes Clark and Tim Kaine Virginian

Well, nothing new about that, but the two races Wes is working on for election RIGHT NOW really will test the waters for next year. If we can get a governor and senator who love Wes, well why not?
I am going to contriubte when the new fundraiser starts up (on the 15th I think).

Wes was a hit in Norfolk on Wednesday. Excellent talk on Democratic brand image development as the party of values such as patriotism, true religion and public service. Great comment also about how Tim Kaine measured up to the Democratic ideals. Dems as party of common good, Reps as party of greed.
Two Wesquotes: "Republicans care about weapons systems, Democrats care about people."
"Be, Know, Do." (from the Army.)
Standing ovation, introductions rivaling John the Baptist re Jesus (I am not worthy to untie his sandals.") They love Wes here. I was at a Clarkie table--most of the folks had been at NCCM, and are planning to attend Wespac event in November, and NCCM2 in August. I didn't know any of them from NCCM, and they didn't really blog. But it was nice to connect with some more Clarkies!
As usual, Wes looked wonderful--navy blazer, red tie. I didn't get to speak to him because he and Tim arrived late at the pre-reception (There was a Vets event prior--I'll bet Wes got caught up with them!), and Wes had to leave soon after his speech to helicopter for an appearance at Mary Washington College.
Believe me, I was happy to donate to Wespac today--keep the good Wes energy going!! Also, I encourage anyone who can to support Tim Kaine. This is a very close, very crucial race (election day is Nov. 8, 2005. VA has a weird election calendar. Tim Kaine is a great candidate.

Hi Summercat,
Thanks for posting about the Norfolk event. I was at the other Clark table and believe we met afterwards when I noticed your Get Starch pin. At any rate, your descriptions are right on and it was a very positive event. My only regret is that the Kaine campaign hadn't thought to have a flag on stage (or in the room as far as I could tell!). I'm glad we had 2 grassroots tables to show our support for both Wes and Tim.
I am concerned in the last two days to read of the large impact that the Republican candidate (Kilgore) seems to be making with his death penalty ads and emphasis. Now, the candidate for atty general is teaming up with Kilgore to pound home the same issue-Kaine being soft on crime and the death penalty. For the life of me, I cannot comprehend the obsession with this, and cannot comprehend how Virginia is so like Texas in this respect. But, it seems that many in this state place this issue above so many other significant ones and coming this late in the campaign, it just might be the one thing that puts it out of reach. I hope I'm wrong. (BTW, this was actually brought up by a local political analyst and well respected professor when he spoke to our committee earlier in the month. Many of you may have seen the stories of a young female freshman who was murdered and finally found a week ago. He indicated in his talk to us that Kilgore might just make a big issue of the death penalty with her crime fresh on the minds of Virginians. How did he know?)
re the Kilgore death penalty garbage, I got a note from the Kine campaign referncing the Kilgore ad, but it seems the ad is not accessible, either from the email link, or directly from the Kilgore website. The local paper had a scorching editorial today about how bad this Kilgore idea was. Maybe the Kilgore people are going to pull their stuff--hopefully this will be a great case of them being, as Perry Mason (or was it Hamilton Burger?) used to say, "hoist on their own petard." :) I wonder if Kaine will run the "Jailbreak Jerry" ad?
Hope to see you at future events!

The Dems are wimpy and soft on crime approach was used by Tim Shallenberger in his campaign against Kathleen Sebelius in 2002. Unfortunately for him, Kansas didn't buy it and showed once again that we care most about quality public education and health care. [Sebelius as insurance commissioner had put the kibosh on the aquisition of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas by Anthem BCBS. I think that's something that helped her get elected.]
Thanks for the updates and Wes sightings!
Kaine is coming out with a great ad to counter Kilgore's Trooper's wife and the ad with the father of a murder victim...many newspapers editorial comments are featured prominently, showing bolded comments from the editorials with a voice reading them. At the end, Tim comes on saying he approves this ad to set the record straight. He'll uphold the death penalty for criminals convicted by Virginia juries "because that's the law".
Let's hope he settles on another issue and moves on, and doesn't let Kilgore finish the last 2 weeks of October dwelling on the death penalty.
to stump for Kaine--wonder if Wes had any input for that. When Wes spoke in Norfolk, he stressed very strongly how crucial this race is.
Of course, "Jailbreak Jerry" Kilgore has KKKarl, Cheney and Laura Bush stumping for him. But he may be toast after the Hitler ad. Tim Kaine's response ad was great.

I've been anxious to hear how the event Tuesday night went. Thanks for the picture.
Looks like the VA Republicans are running a little scared, attacking Wes and Tim in full force....
