As Robert F. Kennedy Jr. points out, his father made the trip to West Virginia to see what was happening there. But these days, the plight of those in the mountains is all but ignored.
My father visited Appalachia in 1966 and was so horrified by strip mining -- then in its infancy -- that he made it a key priority of his political agenda. He complained that Appalachia, with our nation's richest natural resources, was home to America's poorest populations, its worst education system, and its highest illiteracy and unemployment rates. These statistics are even grimmer today as mining saps state wealth. In 1966, 46,000 West Virginia miners were collecting salaries and pensions and reinvesting in their communities. Mechanization has shrunk that number to fewer than 11,000. They extract more coal annually, but virtually all the profits leave the state for Wall Street.Yes, there are many problems facing President Obama, and many issues confronting the Congress. But the issue of mountaintop removal may be unique in that it doesn't require any extraordinary action. It won't cost billions of dollars. It doesn't need any kind of false "bipartisanship." It only requires that President Obama instruct the EPA and other agencies to enforce the existing law. If he does not do this, there is no doubt where the fault for the resulting ruin will lie.
Instead of acting to enforce these laws, administration officials indicated last month that they will allow more than 100 permits to go forward while they carefully review their regulatory options. If they act accordingly, the ruined landscapes of Appalachia will be Obama's legacy.
It's no good to say that someone else started this disaster. The fact is that it's completely within President Obama's power to stop it. If he does not believe this issue requires prompt action, there's one way to prove it.
President Obama should go to Appalachia and see mountaintop removal.Go and see, Mr. President. If you're going to allow this Appalachian Apocalypse to continue, have the courage to face it.

RFK jr supported Hillary, so don't count on the O administration caring what that branch of the Kennedy clan thinks. So what if O's speech writer studied the speeches of RFK to write speeches for O. BTW, Teacherken was at Massa's office for the swearing in thing. It's fun to see people I've read blogging for years.

It must have been exciting to meet him.

Please see the Sestak campaign e mail below. Joe Sestak in my opinion has got to be seriously considering a Democratic primary challenge for Arlen Specter's Senate seat if he is visiting the whole state of Pennsylvania!
I really hope that Joe Sestak runs against Specter because I think he that he has good chances of winning that Senate primary race if he can get enough grassroots support:

Ned Lamont defeated establishment candidate Joe Lieberman in the 2006 CT Democratic Senate primary and Jim Webb defeated establishment candidate Harris Miller in the 2006 VA Democratic Senate primary because they both had enough grassroots support. Joe Sestak in my opinion has good chances to do the same thing with establishment candidate Arlen Specter if he can get enough grassroots support now!
I know that I will be on board with Joe Sestak if he runs!

Joe Sestak Continues his Trip across Pennsylvania
On July 1, at 4 am, Congressman Joe Sestak began a 3-week trip to visit all of Pennsylvania's 67 counties to listen to and meet with the good people of Pennsylvania, including local Democrats and members of the media. The first leg of the trip concluded Friday evening in Lawrence County, near the Ohio border, at a VFW Post where more than 100 Pennsylvanians came out to speak with Joe. After a late-night drive across the state to his District on the southeastern border, Joe enjoyed a traditional Fourth of July celebration that began with the annual Marple Newtown parade and included visits around the three counties in the 7th District. This morning, Joe embarked on the second stage of his statewide trip, where he will visit Pike, Monroe, and Northhampton counties.
You can follow the journey on Twitter and Facebook, where he is posting details and pictures of his travels.

The trip has already been a tremendous opportunity to discuss the issues and challenges facing communities throughout the state and to talk about what needs to be done in the future. Joe looks forward to providing updates over the next few weeks as he continues to travel our beautiful state.
Joe Sestak was elected to Congress in 2006 after a distinguished 31-year career in the United States Navy, and he is honored to represent the Southeastern Pennsylvania district where he was born and raised. During his Navy career, Joe attained the rank of 3-star Admiral, served in the White House as Director for Defense Policy on President Clinton's National Security Council, served in the Pentagon as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and led a series of operational commands at sea, culminating in command of the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier Battle Group (30 ships, 100 aircraft, and 15,000 sailors/marines/aviators/SEALs) during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In our nation's time of crisis in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the Navy turned to Joe Sestak to serve as the first Director of "Deep Blue," the Navy anti-terrorism unit formed in response to the attacks. Joe is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to either branch of Congress. He graduated second in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy and holds a Master's in Public Administration and a PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. Joe lives in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Alex, and proudly represents the 7th District, where his parents and six of his siblings still reside.
