Doug Hoffman in the NY CD 23 race is a proxy candidate for the fringe of the GOP

Hello Everyone:

It is very important that "Conservative Party" candidate Doug Hoffman loses in the special New York Congressional District 23 race next Tuesday because this race is not just about New York.  It is a proxy race that will help to determine the future direction of the GOP and Doug Hoffman is a proxy candidate who represents the extreme and fringe Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and tea party wing of the Republican Party:

Special Interest Cash Floods New York House Race
October 29, 2009 05:22 PM ET

By Robert Schlesinger, Thomas Jefferson Street blog

"Much has been written--a lot of it by me--about how the special election in New York's 23d district has become a proxy for a GOP civil war between base conservatives and more pragmatic establishment Republicans. Perhaps the starkest illustration of how this race--the only House contest in the country this year--has become about something more than the Republican candidate, the Democratic candidate and the Conservative candidate, take a look at some of the dollar figures for amounts raised and spent in the race, specifically the more than $3 million outside groups have funneled into the district..."

2012 Fault Lines in NY-23 House Special Election
October 28, 2009 01:58 PM ET

By Robert Schlesinger, Thomas Jefferson Street blog

"The special election race taking place in upstate New York has been described variably as a GOP civil war and a battle for the soul of the Republican Party. To the extent that those assertions are true (and they are, as I argue in my column), it may also be an early chance to see the contours of the 2012 presidential race. In one corner you've got Sarah "Going Rogue" Palin who has, of course, bucked the Republican establishment and endorsed Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate who seems poised to finish ahead of official GOP nominee Dede Scozzafava. No surprise there: Palin is aiming to inherit John McCain's "maverick" mantle—but as a conservative maverick (No compromises!), rather than as a centrist maverick like McCain (Let's make deals on climate change, campaign finance reform, etc)..."

Republican strategist Tony Blankley correctly explained on CNN how that Doug Hoffman winning this race "will probably decisively drive a lot of Republican establishment people to recognize this is a season to be very ideological and high in arching in your rhetoric" while "If either the Democrat wins or the standard Republican wins in New York 23, then I think the fight goes on for another round:"

TONY BLANKLEY, AUTHOR, "AMERICAN GRIT": "But what's happening now is this tremendous passion, this anti- Obama passion that's rising out of the town halls etc. and it's just getting stronger. The Republican Party is having a fight over whether to fully embrace that or keep their distance from it. And it hasn't been decided.

Now, if the third-party conservative candidate wins, I think that will probably decisively drive a lot of Republican establishment people to recognize this is a season to be very ideological and high in arching in your rhetoric. If either the Democrat wins or the standard Republican wins in New York 23, then I think the fight goes on for another round..."

This race could possibly help to influence who the 2012 Republican Presidential nominee may be:

Morning Fix: NY-23 as 2012 litmus test?

By Chris Cillizza  |  October 27, 2009; 5:05 AM ET

"The Iowa caucuses may be more than two years from now but a series of moves by potential Republican presidential contenders has turned a special election in New York's 23rd district into an early test of conservative bona fides..."

Former Bush speechwriter David Frum is a Neocon who I especially disagree with on foreign policy issues but I will have to give him credit for being truly honest in his analysis where he says what he really thinks as opposed to giving the usual partisan spin like how many other cable news pundits do.

David Frum asked about Doug Hoffman on CNN last night "are you a local candidate or are you part of a national movement?" and he mentioned how that Hoffman could not answer important questions about that district:

JOHN KING, CNN ANCHOR: "David, let me start with you. She endorsed a Conservative Party candidate over the Republican, saying the Republican Party's candidate isn't conservative enough. She says, quote, "Unfortunately, the Republican Party today haws decided to choose a candidate who more than blurs the lines. And there's no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race. That's why Doug Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party's ticket."

How much weight does Sarah Palin carry in New York? And is this damaging for her own Republican portfolio, if you will?

DAVID FRUM, FORMER BUSH SPEECHWRITER: Well, she has to carry some weight. But you know, Hoffman has this problem: the Palin endorsement signals it. Which is are you a local candidate or are you part of a national movement?

There's a very embarrassing story from the Watertown Times, an important paper in the district, that pointed out he went to an editorial board meeting. They asked him about an important highway project. They asked him about why (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

They asked about some important energy issues, all of which mattered to the district. And he was completely flustered, couldn't answer any of the questions. And then it also emerged he didn't read the local paper either. So if that's going to be the face of your party, you're defining another would I would have thought would be an important conservative principal, which is localism..."

Here is the "very embarrassing story from the Watertown Times" about Doug Hoffman that David Frum was referring to:

Hoffman silent on local issues
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2009

"Douglas L. Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate for the 23rd Congressional District seat, offered no position on a few key local issues during a Thursday meeting with the Watertown Daily Times editorial board..."

I can absolutely confirm that most of the extreme right wing Palin, Limbaugh, and tea party wing of the Republican Party are fighting very hard to help Doug Hoffman right now just like how many Democratic activists fought very hard to help Ned Lamont back in 2006:

http://www.redstate.com/index.php?tag=doug-hoffman

Ned Lamont was not just a Senate candidate.  He was the core of a national movement to try and get rid of Joe Lieberman.  Doug Hoffman is not just a House candidate.  He is a proxy candidate who the fringe ideologues in the GOP are using to try and influence the future direction of the Republican Party!

I am absolutely thrilled to see Gen. Clark emphasizing how important that this race is, all of the hard core Neocon GOP ideologues who are supporting Doug Hoffman, and how that the outcome of this race will be "a first electoral test of their movement's strength:"

The Importance of Tuesday

"Radical tea party activists from across the country have come to New York to volunteer for Hoffman's campaign, seeing the race's outcome as a first electoral test of their movement's strength.

Hoffman has even been endorsed by the conservative Club for Growth, Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson, and Dick Armey..."

I want to make it very clear that the radical and fringe wing of the Republican Party that Doug Hoffman represents as a proxy candidate is NOT "right wing" or "conservative" in any mainstream sense of those words:

ANALYSIS: Extreme right wing vs. right wing/Neoconservative vs. Conservative!

Submitted by Mitch Dworkin on July 19, 2007 - 9:07am.

Right below is the link to Doug Hoffman's website where he was proud to be on Glenn Beck's and Mark Levin's extreme right wing talk radio show programs, where he was proud to be endorsed by Dick Armey (a tea party movement leader), and where he was proud that Rush Limbaugh was talking him up on his radio show.

Below that is where Rush Limbaugh expressed his approval of Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum endorsing Doug Hoffman when he said "Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum have now thrown down in the New York election.  They have endorsed Doug Hoffman.  Talk radio has thrown down, ditto Florida.  Conservatism is in the ascendancy. Conservatives are ascending, money is flowing and we're turning a corner" and more!

The very obvious threat and danger of Doug Hoffman winning that proxy race and if the Palin, Limbaugh, and tea party fringe wing of the GOP should win complete control of the Republican Party is that we will probably go right back to the extreme ideology of the Bush-Cheney years the next time that a Republican candidate wins the White House.

We have absolutely no idea right now about what will be happening with the economy, jobs, health care, Iraq, Afghanistan, and with any other issues that may come up which we do not already know about in 2010 and 2012.  If Obama is having problems with any one or more of these issues, then the Republicans could win almost by default like how many Democrats did in 2006 and 2008 mainly because of Bush's failures!

If the Republicans ever win back power and the Palin, Limbaugh, and tea party wing are controlling it; then there will be war, more war, and even more war.  The next sounds that you hear on inauguration day right after the 21 gun salute will probably be bombs that the new President has ordered to be dropped on Iran, North Korea, and on any other country who we may not like.  It would be an utter disaster!

Please try and do what you can to help insure that the fringe proxy candidate Doug Hoffman loses next Tuesday because a loss for Hoffman will also be a loss for Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, all of the big name Republicans who endorsed him, and for most of the extreme right wing fringe GOP activist base!

Conservatism on the Ascendency

October 23, 2009

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Here's John in Indianapolis.  Welcome, John. It's great to have you here on the EIB Network.

CALLER:  Hey, Rush.  What prompted my call is Sarah Palin's endorsement of the conservative running for Congress in New York and juxtaposed against Newt Gingrich's endorsement of the liberal RINO.  And the point I want to make is I think the Republican Party has a very important choice to make.  They risk losing me and millions of others if they don't once again reclaim the mantle of the Reagan conservative movement that was so successful in the '80s.  And one point, one statistic I think they need to look at is more people in this country call themselves conservatives than dare call themselves Republicans.  They will not lose votes if they come out and stand for the right things, particularly against what we're facing now in this country.  It is time -- and I'll just say this. I began this a couple years ago. I made up my mind I'm not voting for RINOs anymore.  I voted for every Republican presidential candidate since 1972 but if they nominate a RINO again, they will not get my vote.

RUSH:  And they won't get the vote of 73% of Republican voters.  In the first hour today we had this from Rasmussen Reports: "73% of Republican voters say congressional Republicans have lost touch with their base.  Just 15% of Republicans who plan to vote in 2012 state primaries say the primary's representatives in Congress have done a good job representing Republican values," and that would be conservative values.  So you're not alone.  You're among 73%.  Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum have now thrown down in the New York election.  They have endorsed Doug Hoffman.  Talk radio has thrown down, ditto Florida.  Conservatism is in the ascendancy. Conservatives are ascending, money is flowing and we're turning a corner.

These "Republicans first" and these Republicans-in-name-only, these people who claim that they want to be moderate Republicans, "That's the only way we're ever going to be win the broad-based election," are just missing the point.  I don't know what's so hard to figure out about going back to 1980 and 1984 and looking at the results.  Sarah Palin is defying the party.  Rick Santorum is defying the party.  Forty-nine percent say no health care reform better than the current plan.  This also from Rasmussen.  Slowly we creep, my friends, to getting a majority of people who understand.  "Forty-nine percent of voters nationwide say that passing no health care reform bill this year would be better than passing the plan currently working its way through Congress."  I think it has begun.

Something is happening out there.  It's palpable.  I can feel it.  Call it a "receding tide," maybe, call it "a stiff breeze," whatever you want. There is a movement about, a coalescing of disparate interests, a loose affiliation of Americans who love their country, who share a sense of danger. Call it self-defense, patriotism, anger, betrayal. It's all of that and more.  Americans are agitated.  They are in a state of unease.  They've had enough of this delusional president who keeps demanding their lunch money, keeps demanding their tax money, keeps destroying their private sector.  They've had enough of indoctrinating chants forced on our school children, czars who pray the mass murdering and liberty-destroying Mao Tse-tung, czars who are communists, a czar who praised the founder of NAMBLA.

Unaccountable czars seizing control of our car companies which have long symbolized American freedom, failing to deliver jobs, destroying the budget and the economy instead, slandering doctors, attacking the Chamber of Commerce, delivering a fascist message to American businesses across the spectrum, apologizing for America instead of being proud for the first time in his life.  Abandoning our allies, undermining the First Amendment, enabling Election Day thugs, blasting tea partiers and town hall attendees for standing up for their rights and their opinions. Picking fights with El Rushbo, Fox News, Hannity and all the rest, clearing the field.  Americans have had ten months to learn what the State-Controlled Media hid from them.  They've gotten an up-close and personal look of Barack Obama.

They get him now.  More and more people each and every day are getting Barack Obama.  It has begun.  Victor Davis Hanson today at National Review Online.  "If Obama continues on his path, he will polarize the country in a way not seen since 1968.  He will set back racial relations to the 1960s.  He will do to the reputation of big government what LBJ did from 1964 to '68, and in the manner of what Jimmy Carter wrought, turned voters off liberal foreign policy for a generation."  That's the conclusion.  It is a long piece that is a brilliant analysis.  And we're seeing this conclusion happen daily.  We're seeing a greater polarization. We're seeing racial relations set back to the 1960s.  We're seeing Jimmy Carter-like destruction of the economy, except in this case it's purposeful.

Story #1: Doug Hoffman Collects Endorsements, Donations

http://spectator.org/archives/2009/10/28/ny23-do-you-believe-in-miracle

RUSH: Hey, folks, Doug Hoffman has picked up a whole bunch of endorsements from important conservative leaders.  Ed Meese; David Keene, the American Conservative Union; Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center; Alfred Regnery, the publisher; Craig Shirley; a whole bunch of them.  His financial coffers are swelling as well.  Doug Hoffman. NY-23.

Story #5: Brookhiser's Take on NY-23, Buckley and Goodell

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZjlhYjBiZTBjOGY5YmUxNmZhYmVlYzg1MTQ5ZjI5NzQ=

RUSH: Rick Brookhiser is an editor at National Review.  Snerdley, would you do me a favor?  Go to Amazon, somebody out there, Brookhiser has a great book on William F. Buckley Jr, growing up with him in terms of working at National Review, and I'd like to mention the name of the book.  Brookhiser, this is relevant here, it's fascinating.  He posted something at their blog, The Corner at National Review Online, yesterday about NY-23.  And this is exactly right.  It's based on the fact, I was telling you a couple days ago, you can't look at NY-23 as a sign a third party would work.  There was no primary here.  Primaries are key.  Primaries are how party bosses are overruled. Primaries are how bad candidates are weeded out.  There was no primary here because this is a special election.  Had there been a special election, Hoffman would have run against Scozzafava and probably won.  But he might have lost.  But that would be it.  Then the Conservative Party would have gotten in gear.

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZjlhYjBiZTBjOGY5YmUxNmZhYmVlYzg1MTQ5ZjI5NzQ=

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465013554?ie=UTF8&tag=theofficiw0c2-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0465013554

This is where Brookhiser's comment is fascinating.  Brookhiser:  "I have been voting in New York state all my adult life, and I campaigned in them even earlier (I sold candy bars for Jim Buckley in 1970)." Bill Buckley's brother.  "The contest in NY 23 is what the New York Conservative Party was made for. The state's cross-endorsement policy means that the Conservatives (and its left-of-center mirror images) generally function as pressure groups," not third parties, "supporting major party candidates they like or undermining those they don't. But sometimes the major party picks a candidate so egregious that the minor party must and can go all out. So it was with James Buckley vs. Charles Goodell --" Roger Goodell's father "-- in 1970, and with Al D'Amato vs. Jacob Javits in 1980 (early Conservative support helped D'Amato win the GOP primary, leaving Javits to run only on the Liberal line). So it is in NY 23 now. Vote for Doug Hoffman."

So the Conservative Party is not a third party.  They join the Republican Party when the candidate's good.  They oppose when not.  Now, James Buckley was a senator from New York, and he was the brother of William F. Buckley Jr.  He opposed Charles Goodell in 1970, Roger Goodell's father. Charles Goodell was a Dede Scozzafava type of Republican, a Republican-in-name-only.  James Buckley ran on the Conservative Party ticket because Goodell was the less-than-true Republican, and of course Buckley won.  Which I don't know if Roger Goodell still carries a grudge against conservatives because of what happened to his father, but hell's bells, folks, anything's possible.

Oh. The name of the book, Right Time, Right Place: Coming of Age with William F. Buckley and the Conservative Movement.  Richard Brookhiser.  As a powerful, influential member of the media, he sent me an advance copy.  It's been out awhile.  It is written from somebody close up and a true disciple believer of conservatism and William F. Buckley Jr.  I'll tell you, if you liked the Reagan sound bites from his Goldwater speech yesterday, treat yourself to Brookhiser's book because it's a trip back to the foundations of conservatism today and it will inspire you and motivate you.

in my opinion. I live in Texas and Governor Rick Perry clearly represents the fringe Doug Hoffman wing of the Republican Party while I think that Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) is NOT in that same pot of extremist stew!

Here is why I think that is the case and why I am definitely rooting for Kay Bailey Hutchison to win the Republican primary race against Rick Perry for Texas Governor even though I do not agree with her on every issue:

1) Rick Perry has also endorsed Doug Hoffman while Kay Bailey Hutchison has not (and she is taking some heat over that from extreme right wing GOP activists):

SHAPLEIGH: Rick Perry’s Texas seceding from reality

By Eliot Shapleigh Special to The Washington Times | Sunday, August 2, 2009

OPINION/ANALYSIS:

“Like the last governor of the last Southern state, Rick Perry is seceding from reality. During the Civil War, governors took up the shield of “states rights” to protect a society based on slavery. In Mr. Perry’s war with President Obama, he does it to shield America from the reality here in Texas…”

8) Rick Perry wanted to reject $556 million in federal stimulus money for unemployed Texans (for political purposes in my opinion in order to better position himself with the hard core GOP activist primary base who does not agree with Obama's economic stimulus package):

HOUSTON (AP) — “Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday rejected $555 million in federal stimulus money that would expand state unemployment benefits, saying the money would have required the state to keep funding the expanded benefits after the stimulus money ran out…”

While I may not agree with Kay Bailey Hutchison on every issue, she is NOT an extremist in my opinion like how I definitely think the evidence shows that Rick Perry is. This is why I consider Rick Perry vs. Kay Bailey Hutchison to be a serious Republican primary race where Rick Perry is an extremist GOP proxy candidate just like how Doug Hoffman is who he endorsed!

It has to be noted that no Democratic candidate has won in any statewide race in Texas since 1994 and it is not likely to happen in 2010 which is supposed to be a bad year for Democrats (unless the Republican nominee has a VERY serious scandal of some kind about on the same level of Mark Sanford). Being realistic, this means that Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison are the only two candidates who have any serious chance of winning the race for Texas Governor unless something very unexpected happens!

As I said in this post above, here is the potential threat and danger if proxy fringe GOP candidates like Doug Hoffman win and if ideologues who think like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh are successful in their attempt to completely control the GOP:

"The very obvious threat and danger of Doug Hoffman winning that proxy race and if the Palin, Limbaugh, and tea party fringe wing of the GOP should win complete control of the Republican Party is that we will probably go right back to the extreme ideology of the Bush-Cheney years the next time that a Republican candidate wins the White House.

It would be an utter disaster!"

Doug Hoffman winning this proxy race will be as much of a victory to the extreme right wing fringe GOP activist base as Ned Lamont beating Joe Lieberman was to Democratic activists in the 2006 CT Democratic Senate primary.  Hoffman winning will also help to empower very dangerous ideologues like Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and the fringe tea party express GOP activists:

The GOP Establishment Must Be Purged as the GOP Loses in NY-23

The GOP Will Either Win With Conservatives Or Lose Without Us

Editor’s Note: I suggest you read carefully as I am not an advocate of purging people like Susan Collins or the typical “RINO” as there are some races where a conservative really cannot win. I am, however, serious that the GOP must purge its staff and leaders who have decided to always go with the liberal. In particular, the NRCC, NRSC, and RNC need some wholesale job terminations of senior staff.

The race for NY-23 has taken a startling, exciting twist. Regardless of what happens on Tuesday, we know for certain the Republican candidate will not, after getting $900,000.00 in support from the Washington GOP Establishment, will not win. Scozzafava dropped out.

This is a stunning rebuke to the Republican Establishment in Washington.

The RNC and the NRCC deserve the rebuke — a rebuke they will get even if Hoffman loses because it is now virtually impossible for the Republican to win.

How much did the NRCC and RNC spend to elect a leftist? Roughly $900,000.00 of your donated money. And let’s not mince words about it. Objectively, despite what her Republican supporters say, Dede Scozzafava is a leftist, to the left of the Democrat on a host of issues that will matter in this 111th Congress.

Scozzafava’s supporters have called her a “moderate,” but her views on abortion, marriage, forced unionization, taxes, the environment, etc. etc. etc. are opposed by most Americans and most people in NY-23.

How many “great” men are going to have egg on their face when Scozzafava loses?

Pete Sessions, the Chairman of the NRCC, is now batting his eye lashes at Doug Hoffman. He is hiding behind a fig leaf. Having gone all in for Scozzafava, hoodwinked good men into soiling their reputations by standing behind this leftist, and wasting valuable resources on a victory he will not see, only now is Sessions tacitly declaring defeat.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1009/28899.html

Relationships between the Republican establishment in Washington and the conservative movement are in rubble. Thanks to Pete Sessions NOT Doug Hoffman, there is new inspiration for a third party movement to challenge the GOP — a movement that will only help the Democrats.

Good men in the GOP are now going to be challenged in primaries because of the ill-will the NRCC has generated in New York’s 23rd Congressional District.

Of all the talk of “purity test” straw men, everyone must remember it was the GOP who insisted on purely Republican candidates. It was Scozzafava’s supporters who claimed we conservatives wanted a “purity test” for candidates. That was and is nonsense. Conservatives are willing to make compromises and choose lesser Republicans who can win in races a conservative most likely cannot. NY-23 was never one of those places and now the GOP is in a world of hurt.

Pete Sessions and the House GOP Leadership — not to mention Michael Steele and the RNC — have failed to gauge the mood of the nation and the conservative base accurately and this will have far reaching implications for the party.

I intend to work within the GOP. Already Democrats are salivating at the thought of a third party conservative movement and are intent on fostering it to hurt the GOP. I will not cooperate with a third party movement. As I have said repeatedly, Doug Hoffman is the exception that proves the rule. America is a two party nation and instead of packing up and fleeing the GOP, we should launch a coup and take it back. Consider NY-23 the first salvo in that coup, with the Florida Senate race right behind it.

Make no mistake about it, Pete Sessions and the NRCC must shoulder most of the blame and responsibility, with Michael Steele and the RNC coming right behind them. They did not listen. They would not listen. They posited themselves as the smartest people in the room.

And we’ve cleaned their clocks.

Now? We should be magnanimous in victory — and whether Hoffman wins or loses, as long as Dede Scozzafava loses it is a victory — but we should demand accountability, we should demand a reckoning, and we should demand a purge from the party establishment of those people most responsible for the Republican disaster in NY-23.

I hope John Cornyn and the NRSC are paying attention.

Hoffman has not won. Yet.

Keep up the pressure. Redouble your efforts. Let’s be excited by the victory we have had, but don’t stand out. Stand up for Doug Hoffman.

PS - As one of our contributors noted private: It speaks volumes about the pathetic leadership of the GOP right now that we are beating up the GOP today instead of beating up the Democrats. Now is the time to beat up the Democrats and drive Hoffman, McDonnell, and Christie to victory on Tuesday.

In NY-23, Conservatives Win

"The race has now been called for Democrat Bill Owens.

This is a huge win for conservatives.

“Whaaaa. . . ?” you say.

There are two big victories at work in New York’s 23rd Congressional District.

First, the GOP now must recognize it will either lose without conservatives or will win with conservatives. In 2008, many conservatives sat home instead of voting for John McCain. Now, in NY-23, conservatives rallied and destroyed the Republican candidate the establishment chose.

I have said all along that the goal of activists must be to defeat Scozzafava. Doug Hoffman winning would just be gravy. A Hoffman win is not in the cards, but we did exactly what we set out to do — crush the establishment backed GOP candidate.

And make no mistake, despite the Beltway spin, we know for certain based on statements from the local Republican parties, that they chose Scozzafava based on advice from the Washington crowd.

So we have demonstrated to the GOP that it must not take conservatives for granted. The GOP spent $900,000.00 on a Republican who dropped out and endorsed the Democrat. Were we to combine Scozzafava and Hoffman’s votes, Hoffman would have won..."

If Doug Hoffman had won this race, then this fringe movement of the Republican Party would have felt more empowered than ever. The loss of this Palin endorsed proxy candidate who defeated the Republican nominee is about as much of a blow to the extreme right wing of the GOP as Ned Lamont defeating Joe Lieberman in the 2006 CT Democratic primary but losing in the general election was to many Democratic activists!

high profile races throughout the country (Doug Hoffman winning in NY-23 would have added much fuel to this very dangerous fire of extremism. Hopefully all of these extreme right wing GOP primary candidates will lose just like how the fringe proxy candidate Doug Hoffman lost):

THE SITUATION ROOM

Election Day in America

Aired November 3, 2009 - 18:00 ET

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: "Let's bring in John King.

He's over at the Magic Map right now -- John, a lot of people are focused on this 23rd District in New York. But It could be having some sort of echo in Florida right now, where the moderate governor, Charlie Crist, wants to become the next senator and a more conservative candidate is challenging him.

JOHN KING, CNN CHIEF NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: That's right, Wolf. There are a handful of races, including that Florida Senate race, where what we could see is conservatives emboldened by what happened in the New York 23.

You mentioned Florida, so we'll start down there. What you have here is an incumbent governor, Charlie Crist. He wants to run for the Senate. He's being opposed by the former house speaker, Marco Rubio, a conservative who says that Charlie Crist, because of his support of the Obama stimulus plan, because of his prominence in the McCain campaign, he believes he is not conservative enough. And that's just one of the races.

Hold on there. We'll move down the map and go all the way over to the West Coast. Here's another one where you see it playing out.

I'll move Governor Crist and Mr. Rubio over here.

Carly Fiorini -- you remember her, Wolf. She's the high tech executive, a former CEO, was prominent in the McCain campaign. Well, state assemblyman Chuck DeVore is running against her, saying she's not conservative enough to be the Republican nominee against Senator Barbara Boxer next year.

So a conservative challenge to a moderate in California, a conservative challenge in to a moderate in Florida.

And, also, here in the State of Utah, the long time Republican senator, Bob Bennett, who was a supporter of President Bush and John McCain's immigration plan. Well, the state attorney general, Mark Shurtleff, getting conservative support in his primary challenge against Senator Bennett.

This is three of about a handful of races, Wolf, where you have conservatives challenging the more establishment Republicans, saying they don't deserve the party's backing and if the party backs them, they will try to essentially -- as happened in New York -- stage a conservative revolt against them.

So here are three of the few. And I'll give you one more, as we pull back in the map a little bit.

I am told by some conservative sources that Dick Armey, the former majority leader, will be going up to the State of Connecticut next week. Chris Dodd is up for re-election next year, the Democrat. He's viewed as vulnerable. Former Congressman Rob Simmons is viewed as the Republican candidate right now. But I'm told Dick Armey will go up to meet with conservatives -- some conservatives up in Connecticut who think Mr. Simmons is too moderate to be their nominee there.

So we're seeing this effect spread across the country, as conservatives see what happened in New York 23. They already were doing these races, by the way. We shouldn't -- we can't attribute these directly to New York 23. But they are emboldened by what happened in New York, Wolf. And they are looking around the country for other races where they can challenge Republicans who they do not believe are conservative enough to carry the party's mantle in the 2010 mid-terms.

BLITZER: You know, it's interesting, John, getting back to Florida right now, the challenger to Charlie Crist, Marco Rubio, he's already got a picture that he's posted on his Web site. Take a look at this -- a picture of Charlie Crist, the governor who wants to be senator, and the president with the caption, "Get the Picture?"

I -- I believe a lot of Democrats -- at least that's what they're saying to me, John. They are looking at this battle among Republicans and they're sort of salivating, thinking that if the real conservatives win these contests, that's going to turn out, in the general election, to be good for them.

But should they be salivating this early?

KING: It's very hard to tell a year out, Wolf, what the climate will be next year, what will the economy be, will they pass a health care bill; if they do, what will voters think about it. Republicans say the Democrats are overstating their glee, if you will, saying the more conservative the nominee, say, in a state like Florida, the better the Democratic chances.

What the Republicans say is that they're going to have these races. They believe if they have the intensity and drive up turnout, it will actually help their party. And there are many who believe if you have a good, contested primary, in the end, it actually helps your party.

The Democrats are hoping what happens is that it divides the party, that it causes a Republican civil war along moderate and conservative lines. It's a -- these are all quite interesting to watch.

And you mentioned Mr. Rubio. Not only does he have that picture of Governor Crist on his Web site with President Obama, he's using his Twitter account today, Wolf, to urge people to what he says finish the job in New York 23. He says elect conservative Doug Hoffman up there to prove, he says, this would send a message that we don't need "two Democratic parties."

BLITZER: John King, thanks very much..."

John McCain also has an extreme right wing fringe primary challenger as well who John King did not mention in the transcript above:

McCain facing 2010 primary

"Social conservatives tolerated John McCain as the party's nominee, but never trusted him, and he now appears to be facing a serious primary from the right in Arizona next year.

Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and a prominent figure in the movement to clamp down on illegal immigration, will be announcing tomorrow at an event on the Mexican border that he's resigned from the group to run in the 2010 Senate primary..."

Rubio - Crist Fast Becoming Proxy War Between Republican Right and Center

By Thomas Francis, Wednesday, Oct. 21 2009 @ 1:19PM
Categories: Florida

Another conservative U.S. Senator has defied party leaders to give an endorsement to Marco Rubio over Charlie Crist. And check out the statement by Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe, particularly this part:

"Like me, Marco believes that the federal government works best when it returns dollars, decisions and freedom to our local communities and families. In the Senate, Marco will stand up for America's taxpayers, not with President Obama and dangerous big government spending," he added.

A none-too-subtle swipe at Crist's appearing with Obama in Fort Myers during the heat of the stimulus controversy. And there may be more "true conservatives" going Rubio after today's news of how the young former speaker has narrowed Crist's lead from 29 points to 15 in the latest poll.
