Too many of us have family/neighbors/coworkers who are in deep financial trouble and under major stress right now.

Tonight's speech should have taken on a more somber tone and less applause out of respect for their fellow Americans.

It's a disgusting display, imo.

Just my two cents.

The problem is that most manufacturing jobs, if they're going to pay much, require more than a trade school education these days. You need at least a couple of years of college. At least in my area we've seen the results over the past few years. Until a few years ago we had students coming to the college with a trade school diploma (and often the student loans that go with the private schools) but the either couldn't get even an entry level job or if the did discovered they didn't have a future with some college. Now most of the trade schools that refused to keep up with the times have closed their doors.

A more interesting and I think a more positive change has started this year. One of my courses which for years has had largely computer science majors and few engineering majors suddenly has fine arts majors. It sure makes the class a lot more interesting.

They are on line to get frozen or cut in the new discretionary spending budget freeze.

Some examples of governmental discretionary spending include:

Labor, health programs, human services, housing assistance, education, environment, transportation, social services, community development, Coast Guard, space exploration, highway construction...

As for the agencies that would now have to deal with spending limits and cutbacks, some are:

The EPA, Commerce Department, Health and Human Services, the Department of Interior... to name a few.

Exempt from the limits will be security and defense agencies, whose budgets will undoubtedly rise in the years ahead as the president pursues an aggressive foreign policy agenda.

And, if, on the off chance someone can, and they start doing it, that will make more progress in limiting the influence of idealogies on both sides than anything else.

Conservative coup

By: MARTIN KADY II on November 2, 2009 @ 7:13 AM

"The conservative coup in upstate New York over the weekend has revealed an ugly truth: Republicans are no longer in control of their base..."

Republicans in Congress are not going to seriously work with Obama when they fear Limbaugh so much and keep on apologizing to him. The reason why they fear Limbaugh so much is because they know that he just has to give the word to his 20 million followers and they will be primaried the next time that they are on the ballot!

Republicans in Congress saw what happened to Arlen Specter after he voted for the economic stimulus package, they see Charlie Crist getting primaried right now because he stood on a stage with Obama to accept economic stimulus money, and they see this going on all over the country right now (even John McCain has former Rep. J.D. Hayworth as a serious primary challenger right now because the Limbaugh wing of the GOP does not consider him to be "pure" enough)!

Unfortunately it really is this serious Kelly!

People need to know that others care in the dark times...

It took a very long time to convince my sister that she can't do it alone and needs to move back home.

Can you imagine... moving back home at 47 yrs old?

Anyway, I was looking forward to her living at home for a year or so and getting back on her feet.

Though, I'm concerned that she may not have a home to live in for very long.

My mom passed away, suddenly, a few weeks ago -- I've been sifting through her personal items and medical bills for several days now. All I can say is WOW -- the fees are mor shocking than I imagined. I doubt that Medicare will cover all of it so we may lose our parents' house.

Of course, no need to share my concerns with my sis.

It's so sad to know that this is only one story of many across the country.

Don't panic at the bills and amounts contained in the original bills. When I broke my hip, the hospital "bill" said something like $46,000. I think the hospital eventually got less than 10% of it, and my out-of-pocket payment was $500. I warn you, too, that it could be up to a year or even more before it's all settled.

He's doing what he can (at least I think so), but he can't do it alone.

I missed part of the speech and catched it later because I was joining other teachers at a school board meeting where they are proposing even more draconian cuts for next year.

I hope things improve for your sister, but you can't blame everything on the President even if you disagree with his policies...well I guess you can but I think it's been a bit narrow-minded. I disagree with the thrust of the "race to the top" program but I'm not going to dismiss everything he is fighting for because of that. I like the fact that he is supporting nuclear power; we need that to fight climate change and become energy independent. I like how he called out the gang of five on the S.C. I like his sincerity, and I want him to succeed.

It is clear many Republicans want the country to fail so they can "win" in November. A positive public response to the SOTU can help put pressure on them to change their ways. The President can't do it alone; it will take a lot of political pressure, and higher approval rating for the POTUS will make them squirm, I guarantee you.

In any case best of luck to your sister and all of us. These are tough times, but I believe America will pull through.

That subject line is pure snark, for those of you who don't know me.

We're netflixing The Tudors.  That King Henry #8 was a pretty cagey dude, and could always convince himself that he was doing what was right (read: served his own agenda) with clever spin and adroit self-delusion.   No need to watch the freak-show carried by the networks last night, when I can watch the same disgusting displays of spin, delusion, greed and power-mongery with better costumes and production design on my DVD player. Seriously, Peter O'Toole as Pope?  Now that's casting!  And that Jonathan Rhys Meyers - oh, there's some intense hottiness, despite his characters penchant for being a complete bastard.

 -- I'm laughing because it's not funny.
