That's what we created in this country. That's in our Constitution. ... I think we should be very clear on this. You know, this country was founded on the principals of the Enlightenment. It was the idea that people could talk, reason, have dialogue, discuss the issues. It wasn't founded on the idea that someone would get stuck by a divine inspiration and know everything right from wrong. I mean, people who founded this country had religion, they had strong beliefs, but they believed in reason, in dialogue, in civil discourse. We can't lose that in this country. We've got to get it back.

IN THE FANTASY WORLD that President George W. Bush inhabits, the failure of Iraqi leaders to agree on a constitution is another inspiring milestone along the road to Iraqi democracy.

It's amazing how often these milestones whiz past. Only last week, the Iraqis' previous failure to reach agreement was hailed by the president as a "landmark." When failure is described in such soaring language, one wonders how the president would describe actual success.

Hi Ben, how's the headache? Nothing new from my end. My cousins have tried all our communications ideas and some of their own. The Times-Picayune has had to evacuate their building in New Orleans, so news interrupted there.

Tried to sleep for a few hours. Tried my abortive and rescue meds and tamed it for awhile, but it is ramping up again. It looks like the bulk of the storm is starting to turn east and the barometer is beginning to rise. Should be good in 6 - 8 hours. I hate being a walking weather predictor.

I have two barometers and I can always feel the storms coming before the instrument picks it up, by days, usually. We had a small earthquake here, same thing. As soon as it happened my headache lifted. The ENT who did my sinus surgery said changes in barometric pressure can effect your sinuses and cause pain. Nice to at least talk to a doctor who doesn't look blankly at me when I talk about being a walking barometer.

Hi Dear Blog!
Cannot remain but a moment, but I saw on Old GD that LJM could not contact her family members and I just wanted to extend my "light" and prayers to her and her family during her waiting period.

Cannot be here too much right now, hopefully later I can catch up. And one big heaping note of praise to fellow Clarkistas for your brilliant questions on TPM yesterday to Wes! I caught only the earliest portion but was duly impressed with the discussion on many levels. What an innate leader we have found!

There is a huge typhooon that will go straight through us tomorrow and the next day. It will not be pretty. Hope the electricity holds. In Taiwan there is no place to run and the typhoons are larger than the island. Still it iw where the eye of it goes through and we are elected by fate this time round.

Maybe it will veer north though. One never knows. It cannot be worse than the Hurricane on the Gulf Coast. Horrific! We are stunned by the video coverage and we are used to this stuff.

So i'm hoping its safe to post a little humor from today's Borowitz Report:

ARMY TO RECRUIT AT MTV MUSIC AWARDS
Rappers Could Skip Firearms Training, Pentagon Believes

One day after rap mogul Suge Knight was shot in the leg at a party celebrating the MTV Music Awards, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced that the Army would start recruiting soldiers for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan at all future installments of the popular awards show.

"We believe that the highest concentration of potential enlistees with extensive firearms experience may in fact be at the MTV Music Awards," Mr. Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon.

The Defense Secretary said he was "impressed" when he heard that someone at the awards party had successfully shot Mr. Knight: "If one of those fellows had good enough aim to hit Suge Knight in the leg, imagine what they could do to some of those pesky Iraqi insurgents."

He said that by recruiting soldiers at the MTV Music Awards, the Army would be gaining a pool of enlistees who would require no firearms training whatsoever, saving the Pentagon and U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars a year.

"Teaching these guys how to use a gun would be a serious waste of time," Mr. Rumsfeld said. "It would be like teaching Courtney Love how to snort powder up her nose."

While the Defense Secretary would not specify how the Army would induce rappers to enlist, he told reporters, "We are fully prepared to offer them a Cadillac Escalade, and we may throw in a ho or two as well."

Elsewhere, in medical news, redheads who spend time in the sun and eat French fries and potato chips should already be dead by now.

I went ahead and filled up my little old 13.5 gallon tank. Granting that it was really low it still choked me to hand the attendant $34. Of course if I waited to fill up till tomorrow on the way to work it would be worse no doubt.

I expect my relatives are tucked away in that house in Covington with no power and the heat rising, but probably OK. So many people in New Orleans are going to find they have nothing left. I'd be surprised if they let people rebuild in some of those badly flooded areas. I remember being in Florida, just after Andrew. What a mess and many of those people took their insurance money and moved to Naples, Florida. They didn't rebuild in Miami.

Anyway, left work a couple hours early to gather my things for tonight. I'm taking a camcorder and hope I can get to use it there, so if it's an open event, and if I get any vid, I'll try to get it uploaded somehow, but might be very late. Will be heading out in a couple hours.........this will be my second time seeing Wes LIVE. Never thought I'd have a first, but was so delighted to have him come to a nearby community. He was so fine on MTP Sunday. Guess I missed him on wisconsin public radio. Had I known, I would have scooted to the parking lot to call in. I've been on that show a couple times now.........lol.

Will be thinking of all of you unable to attend and will send him the best from his CCN family. Ron Kind is very nice. I've met him before. Tho we can't vote for him, we'll donate to his campaign. Will hang here for a few and than back to gathering my stash and maybe take a quick nap........i'm beat.

Bush "is campaigning" to take credit for the disaster relief efforts in New Orleans, apparently. But, it's like adding salt on a wound! I think relief should have been more expansive by now. Therefore, his obstruction into FEMA and Red Cross organizing efforts is another disaster waiting to happen, especially since Bush deployed over 33% of LA's National Guard forces to Iraq, while blocking funding to prepare New Orleans against Category 5 hurricanes..

Just got this email & moments later, one from the Clinton Global Initiative- Wes will be attending a CGI event just days from now.

Here's Harry's battle plan:

The 10 Step Plan to Take Back the Senate

Get the Democratic Message Out
Recruit Top-Tier Candidates
Coordinate all Levels of the Democratic Party
Build the Best Technology
Expose Right-Wing Republicans
Speak Directly to the Voters
Recruit a Grassroots Army
Empower Activists With Our Message
Outsmart Our Opponents
It All Starts With You

Republicans in Washington think they have a new "permanent majority." I have seen just how far they will go to satisfy their extreme right-wing base because they don't think anyone can stop them. So far, in this session of Congress, the United States Senate has been open for business for 101 days. And, for 101 days, Republicans have ignored the needs of the American people.

Senate Republicans found over 30 days to debate right-wing judges, but wouldn't give an extra minute to supporting our troops or providing for the needs of our Veterans. If you're an Exxon lobbyist, a right-wing judge, or a White House leaker, then, yes, this may have been a productive session, as Republicans claim. If you're a member of a working family, struggling to afford health care and looking for help from Republicans in Congress, you must disagree.

The good news is that Senate Democrats have a roadmap for taking back the Senate in 2006 and stopping the right wing from taking over our country. We're going to out-organize, out-maneuver, and out-raise the Republicans to stop to their extremist agenda and return to the business of the American people. And you are the secret weapon.

Am I the only one who misses the text formatting of ccn 1?!

The answer to that question is NO, you are not alone in this feeling. I, for one, miss it like crazy.....but I'm adapting and trying not to whine incessantly.

I don't approve of political jokes.....I've seen too many of them get elected.

if Harry's aware of the tabulators? Someone posted yesterday that Dems are not running in some of the Repub stronghold areas - made me wonder if it's 'cuz they know even if they win they won't win...

As for the text formatting, no you're NOT the only one. Do you know how to do the html stuff? The basics are easy - but I haven't got the link one down yet - usually use Brad Blog's cheat sheet which works great if you keep it in an open window for easy access.

looking over the formatting at AirAmerica's blog, I noticed that the formatting is similar to CCN II; and I suspect they use Drupal software.

There's a big difference in overall web design, which I hope we adapt soon.

Also, they use MsWord editing features for ease of use function; and it looks less cluttered and use more logical "eye" friendly techniques such as appropriate font sizes to highlight user posts and comments.

You think that's the same software? I agree, it is MUCH easier to read (cleaner) and post there and today was the first time I ever saw it. I love the way the comment box is set up so you're not scrolling all over the place just to post and yeah, the formatting tools right under the comment box rock!! Maybe we should have them check out that blog as an example. They don't have numbered posts either though so maybe not the BEST example!

That could be a problem, but I noticed that they color the headline bars to indicate new or old posts. Also, the use of .gif images and other colors makes it more engaging for users or lurkers to promote interest and participation, imo.

Every time I get one of these communiques, whether email or snail mail, I respond (to Contact Us, etc.) that I will not financally support Dem organizations until they initiate demands for voting reform.

Drove to Madison to see the General; WESPAC fundraiser just before a Dem. fundraiser he'd be speaking at. (Gassed up at $2.72, it was $2.99 on the way back) Anyway...

Forum was a restaurant apparently owened by Albanians who contributed the space (not may people ate; we did for support) and spread the word, along with Vet groups and some Dem party activists. I counted 91 people there, and couldn't see everybody, so a turnout of 100 wouldn't be lying. Donjo, Dormaphea (sp?), and Vicky were there (I'm terrible with names & they were flying fast, apologies in advance to anybody I missed.) and 4star (who attended UW in Madison) came in from New Jersey where she recently moved.

Wes spoke on, well, the usual topics, nothing really new. It's so refreshing to hear a speech that makes SENSE. Then took questions from the audience. Several from Albanians with heavy accents; one had his son translate for him. Speech and questions heavy on Iraq, war, and how to handle terror. I was busy shooting photos, wasn't concentrating.

I'll be editing/posting photos to UnitedForClark, will notify as I get them uploaded. I have several panoramic shots that need to be stitched together to show the crowd, so it'll be a little while.

The 'collection plate' was nicely filled with checks, they hadn't added them up, but I'm sure it was into 4 figures. I tossed in $100, and the check below was for $200 (out of maybe several dozen) so I hope WESPAC does OK. He'll be flying north for another speech, so should get a good infusion.

I'm sure I forgot stuff, so feel free to ask. I'll keep an eye while photo-editing.

So great that you felt well enough to go! Can't wait to see your photos! You know General Clark's blogging at TPMCafe today, yes? I heard a bit of him on the radio earlier, but unfortunately, came in right when the host lost the connection!! He called back for one last question - don't know how long he was on but it was GREAT!!
