All U.S. passports will be implanted with remotely readable computer chips starting in October 2006, the Bush administration has announced.
Sweeping new State Department regulations issued Tuesday say that passports issued after that time will have tiny radio frequency ID (RFID) chips that can transmit personal information including the name, nationality, sex, date of birth, place of birth and digitized photograph of the passport holder. Eventually, the government contemplates adding additional digitized data such as "fingerprints or iris scans."

"They've built little baby radio stations into peoples' passports and covered it with concrete," he said, "but when the little hatch is open, you can still hear the music." said Bill Scannell, a privacy advocate who founded the site RFIDkills.com.
What ELSE are they gonna put on the RFID chip? Dental Records? DNA scans? Oh, and don't forget about getting a NATIONAL ID
FAQ: How Real ID will affect you
Starting three years from now, if you live or work in the United States, you'll need a federally approved ID card to travel on an airplane, open a bank account, collect Social Security payments, or take advantage of nearly any government service. Practically speaking, your driver's license likely will have to be reissued to meet federal standards.
~
The Real ID Act hands the Department of Homeland Security the power to set these standards and determine whether state drivers' licenses and other ID cards pass muster. Only ID cards approved by Homeland Security can be accepted "for any official purpose" by the feds.
~
Bottom line:
The Real ID Act would establish what amounts to a national identity card. State drivers' licenses and other such documents would have to meet federal ID standards established by the Department of Homeland Security.

.....note to self.....get new passport. Mine expired in the early 90s and I never bothered to renew it. :(
George Bush has had his day and he's bollixed it up.

this is no longer funny!
We moved to Maryland shortly after 9/11 and had a helluva time just changing our driver's licenses around. The documentation they required was ridiculous and then they told my husband that his birth certificate was invalid?! It's the one his parents received when he was born, fercripessake!!! We had to go through all sorts of rigamorole to get a new one......and he already had a passport that had been issued from that very same birth certificate. Go figure....

to think about... I found my passport the other day and lo and behold it's good until Oct. '07! So... We've (I've) got 2 years to figure out if there's enough left here to fight with/for or if it's too late and we need to bail! Think you'll be ready for that DR/Jamaica escape by then if necessary? How about costa Rica?
A friend's parents have bought land down there (on the coast) in the event they and their like-minded friends need to flee! Apparently it's a surfer's paradise - sounds like a good alternative to me! Whaddayathink? :D
