Please don't--I repeat, DON'T--get angry at John Aravosis, the founder of AmericaBlog. He is one of our strongest friends and allies. John bought Clark's cell phone records from a private company that offers the service just to prove how easily accessible private records are to anyone in the country.
You'll find in the link I've inserted a scanned image of the records, with each numbe partially blacked out. General, if you're reading this, please verify the authenticity of these records so we can call attention to the complete lack of privacy concerns on the part of this government and the telecommunications industry.
Hopefully Wes will take this bull by the horns and be the blogosphere hero. Not to mention the entire American publics. :)
It would be at least more fun. How many important friends of General Clark are going to be getting calls that say "bababooey" now.
I will remain angry at Mr Aravosis, though I understand his motivations.
John blacked out all but the last two digits of each number--just so Clark would be able to verify their authenticity without giving the whole number away.

Me thinks General Clark's cell number may have very recently changed! But you are right that may be how John got his number.
the number of the cell phone in question. If you don't have that, you can't get anywhere, from what I understand. I presume John has the cell phone numbers of many important people, given his prominence.
I think it would be a good idea to ask him to black out at least one more number from those records if he keeps them available for anyone to see. It only takes researching 100 combinations per call to come up with all the possible people Clark could have called, and many numbers will be out of service or reach someone that it's obvious Clark wouldn't know. That is a project a reporter or a political operative could easily attempt. There isn't much shame in either business really. Just call up every number and pretend to be a salesman.
I don't come up with that calculation, Tom. IF there are 10 numbers/tel#, that leaves 8 unknown numbers that remain hidden. Generally, each number could be from 0-9, or 10 combinations for each position, which would be (1/10) xE8. So the max number of combinationsshould be no more than 100,000,000 possible numbers.
Of course,..I could be off a few orders.

In my haste to deal with a possible problem I somehow got it inverted and thought all but two of the numbers were NOT blacked out. That would be a much more doable research project,lol I was just polishing off an email to John when I got this intuition that I should come back here first and double check the facts before sending it. OK, I think all is well.
Besides the NSA probably already has all of Clark's calls, right?
NSA has pretty much automated a forward of his calls, emails and campaign04 contacts to Condi, Hadley, and the WH over the last 5 years, imo.

..these weren't hacked...they were bought on the open market. This is something Congress could correct very quickly.....if they were motivated.

General, please stay on message about the body armor for our troops. Do not let this be a distraction. Although I find it very disturbing.
I agree, but this is an "invasion of privacy" issue that goes to the heart of how we balance national security issues with civil liberties, and how Bush's special interests seek to abuse it. For better or worse,.. Clark can now bring this to the forefront of discussion.
So, this should be top priority! It goes directly into civil liberty and privacy issues illustrated by the Alito nomination, the NSA Spy Scandal, and the President's twisted sense of divine authoritarianism; but also whether political orgs and gov't interests can easily gain access to our personal info without warrant, oversight or our knowledge and consent.
This is an invasion of privacy issue. And, it opens a tremendous opportunity for us to engage other blogs, and discuss Clarks' merits to discuss these issues between national security and civil liberties.

It ties to so many things. The convergence of an imperial Presidency that is owned by large corporate interests, each with digital technology available to invade everyone's privacy, two sides of the same coin with a wealth of ties connecting them. This connects to the Supreme Court nominee issue, and the NSA issue, and the K Street issue, and the Patriot act issue; all of which is in play right now.
Clark nuetralized the knee jerk pig headed suspicians of a career military man that many liberals like me had about him when his name first popped up on our radar, precisely because he so stronly defended our civil liberties. I have been wishing Clark could free up a little time from the pressing crisis in the Middle East to talk more about these concerns in light of current events, but now the issue has come to his own front door. When opportunity knocks...
What? You don't think they've been listening in on his phone calls already. Might as well as long as you don't need court approval.
But no one would have been more aware of that possibility all along & the implications thereof than Wes, who knows all about secure communications & lack thereof. Further, he has done a lot of work with James Lee Witt & given many many talks to professional groups about communication technologies.
they can't arrest you for your thoughts...erm...well...at least not yet. NSA hasn't perfected the technique as of today's date...tomorrow...who knows?
my land line's tied up with ... well, with all this! lol Soo...they can get me by land or by sea...errrrrrr land line or airwaves...anyway, you know what I mean.

That's great, as CNN did a great piece on this at 5 minutes to 6 Eastern tonight, CBS did a piece on the overall cell phone records for sale issue during their nightly broadcast, and with NBC, well, that's a hell of a press hit on this issue. Let's hope it's enough of a hit to get the public's and the politicians' attention.
I went to that site where they bought General Clark's records. If you want to buy a cell phone number, you have to have the "subject's" social security number. Now how does that work? What does social security number have to do with it? I thought SS#'s were only legally allowed to be used for SS and income taxes.
though for decades the government has claimed it's not so, the facts are, there is nothing you can do without it.
Try to get a driver's license...try to get a loan...try to file your hospitalization expenses or doctor bills to you insuranc company without it.
Your Social Security number is your ticket to be able to function in this country...it IS your "national I D card" pure and simple.
I'm pretty sure. They have to let you opt out and use a different ID number. Still, though, I'm a little surprised that cell phone companies are using it that way. It's one thing when your employer does it; they need it for tax purposes anyway. Karl got the cell phones for us, so I didn't know they were doing that. That just seems to be going WAY too far.
Anyway, I doubt John had Wes's SS#. He must have gotten the cell phone number some other way.
