The General Takes the Pulpit

Firsthand Accounts
From the diaries -- Larry
The United Methodist Church of Hollywood is huge, gothic, and glorious - sunlight filters in through intricate stained glass clerestory windows, enormous vaulted ceilings tower overhead, topped off with elaborately carved wooden truss beams, gracefully pointed arches frame the windows and doorways, The spectacular setting created a fitting frame for our Wes.
An estimated 400-500 excited Democrats filled the pews. My section of the church was treated to a pass the bag of Clark buttons (thanks to icantbelieve's rapid response button delivery!) Everyone put one on - we were pumped and ready.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the uniformed, returning vet son of Candidate Russ Warner--running against boo hiss Dreaded David Dreier in the 50th. I think I leaked a few tears pledging allegiance to OUR flag with Wes standing before me reciting the pledge as well. At the end "with Liberty and Justice for all"-- the entire crowd, as if on cue, spontaneously took the word 'ALL' and shouted it in emphasis. It was powerful.
Bubbly and charming - Stephanie Miller of Air America took the stage and commandeered the crowd with a surprisingly tight and roaring comedic opening. She did her Arianna / Arnold impressions in an imaginary debate which had everyone in stitches. (Well, maybe not Arianna, but I believe she had left by this time)
In a quiet moment, Ms Miller took a beat and solemnly announced-- I am hear today for three words...
General Wesley Clark.
(crowd erupts in applause)
"General Clark-- I would put you on my future husbands list but I'm afraid Gert would probably kick my butt!"
She tells the crowd that since she has been speaking, three more republicans have been newly indicted. It's clear that she too holds Wes in the highest esteem and having a strong progressive radio voice on our side can only be a boon for WesPAC and any future plans.....like running for some higher office....at some point...down the road...
She tells us that her mother is "really republican", 82 years old, and that if George W. Bush was caught having sex with a sheep on the White House lawn, her Mom would say "Well honey, he's just trying to help out. The sheep was probably cold, he just wanted to make it warmer...why do you hate America?"
Her first introduction is John Heaner, local Dem party chair, who gave a stirring warm up "Take Back the House" speech and brought each of the candidates forward to rousing cheers...Francine Busby was infectiously enthusiastic and clearly poised to get the vacant Cunningham seat left open through his admittance to taking $2.4 million in bribes...the Republican way. Michael Webber, the indefatiguable, spoke as well and took the crowd yet another notch into its anticipation.
THE INTRODUCTION
Sincerely humbled by being chosen to introduce Wes, Stephanie likened it to Carrot Top introducing Ghandi!
She rattles off his key resume points, at "Rhodes Scholar" she squeals "Oh, ME TOO!!", finishing with "candidate for President of the United States" bringing on huge applause and whistles...and she then says something about being in Church and prayer and, "Please God, make him run and get nominated" Well the room went wild here-- more whistling than at a Manhattan taxi stand. Woo Hooing like it was going out of style. Deafening screaming like at a rock concert. Out of control -- Dems want Wes.
She looks to Wes and flatly says-- "I don't know General....sounds like there's a groundswell to me..." Then she introduces him at last and again, the applause and shouting goes on forever....the crowd up on it's feet.
Right off the bat he asks the Vets in the crowd to stand up and be recognized. A good group representing all ages rises to warm applause and cheers from an appreciative crowd. I'll bet it felt better than a magnet on a bumper.
When discussing his writing of the Real State of the Union speech, Wes confesses that the exercise left him feeling so saddened... The church quieted to dead silence as he went on.
"WHY?" His voice dropping with an edge of pain in it..."WHY are we here?... I came to recognize that millions of people all over the world, they believe that America's beacon of hope is dimming-- they believe our star is setting, they believe America's time is passing...WHY?? Why, When we are the greatest country in the world?-- OUr Bill of Rights- that set the standards for the whole world....WHY?, When we save the world from tyranny, Why? When we have the most incredible Constitution...WHY? Why is our day passing? WHY?"
Each successive "WHY?"--some whispered, some pleaded-- was more plaintiff than the previous...it was the soft sound of Wes's heart breaking as he pondered these questions, and we all broke along with him in the pews.
You could have heard a mosquito cough at this point. (I privately wondered if he'd been reading donjo's posts and borrowed the WHY theme from him. But plagiary is so UnWesLike...)
Has a full Church ever been so quiet I wondered?
Now here it gets eerily symbolic. Suddenly I'm watching Wes up there, aglow beneath the stained glass and Romanesque archways, a draped green cloth reading "HOLY * HOLY * HOLY" displayed to his right... I scan the crowd to find them - to a person- transfixed. Literally glued to his words, which at this point are booming in echo off the massive stone walls....and I realize profoundly where I am.
I am in Church...on so many levels. We has taken the pulpit and delivered a sermon that this hungry congregation was voraciously inhaling, hanging on his every word. A sort of Church of Democracy.
Wes had taken his already riveting public speaking skills to a new and transcendant level-- he was preaching democracy. Preaching ethics, preaching the Constitution, values, and America, with a passion to rival any of the best of them. I have not seen him this powerful to date, relishing more than ever the rhythms of working the room from the podium. My heart raced at the revelation and fusion of it all. Holy Holy Holy.
He should probably book more house of worship venues-- I make a mental note for WesPAC. If this isn't a man running for President, then this is a man rehearsing to play a role of a man running for President, my mind tells me. I tell my mind to shut up and listen.
Next he concluded how the blunders of the current administration had turned sour our vast good faith and reputation in the world, from Iraq to Katrina, listing the fatal errors that dragged us into this pit and plundered our national pride. He categorizes how the world sees America now and what they hear from us--
"Osama Bin Laden wanted dead or alive, Bring em on, Old Europe, You're either with us or against us--They see the carnage and destruction, the waste, the misuse or our men and women in uniform.-- They hear us talkin' tough....but they don't see real leadership."
On Katrina-- "--when the United States of America CAN'T get it together for our own natural disaster! Despite hundreds of millions of dollars, CAN'T score in the Middle East....Can't Can't Can't...they SMELL it abroad, they smell it, it's in the air-- it's this nastiness, it comes out in partisanship."
He pulls out the Bible, (and calls it "Pat Robertson's book")-- telling us the story of his decision to run in the '04 race. Gert would not give him a YEA or NAY on the issue, leaving it for Wes alone to decide. "It's your decision" she said. He stole away to go to the Bible, and read verses and psalms, ("So I sat down with Pat's book...") seeking that confirmation that might come to him in the form of a tingle or recognition of some message. "Nothing! Nothing!" He continued to read. Still nothing.
He put the book away, and the phone rang with a male voice that said to him
"General Clark?"
"Yes who is this?"
"It doesn't matter. You have to run"
And hung up.
There was much more rabble rousing party rallying and advice for the grassroots, (always Country before Party, get the uninvolved into politics, the Party of Service and equal opportunity, Save the Constitution...preserve our rights, Congress needs to do their duty, and don't be shy about National Security discussions) But the key moments to me were the pleas to take back our country, so heartfelt and so urgently expressed.
"For America to be safe....We've got to make more friends than enemies"-- Wes Clark
My day in Church in Hollywood......Holy Holy Holy
There were so many "moments" in that Church.
It was really an amazing day there. I think it's why I was so exhausted last night....the emotional intensity was draining!
Thanks for all your great Clarkticipation hekebolos! You're a valued member of our community.
Er...I think I should go pack soon? I leave at 5 AM
I think I have Snow Affective Disorder.
I will remain in the house most likely-- rearranging things for my Mom so she can get to stuff without having to bend over, as she had a hip come out last month.
It's not a full fledged "vacation"! But it will be great to visit with her. And I'm happy to learn she watches Jon Stewart, Colbert and, well.....Fox News too, which has its occasional perks.
Never been to the Squaw, no. Is it anything like Squawk Valley? My bird spends a lot of time there... ;P
LOL.
Snowing and blowing, cold, but mom will be ever so glad to see you and keep the home fires lit to keep you warm I've no doubt.
Kind of neat to know you'll be in the vicinity of Ohio...I'll watch for a glow to the north. The energy you give off just might light the sky and melt that snow.

because you're on fire.
Your reports are so detailed, so much fun and so inspirational. The pics are great as well. Love your caption about Keith's reply to Gert following the tie compliment.
btw, I'm with you on "not doing snow". I've never even seen it. (well, apart from on TV and in pictures.)
You'd be taking them to the Better Business Bureau if you bought a washing machine the way we went into the war in Iraq. Wes Clark, CNN Aug 17 2003

Borrow a coat from someone and go to a thrift store to buy some good used cheap winter clothes for the week. At the end of the week, donate them. I've done that when I traveland it works very well.

I want hekebolos's recap too.
We're greedy here at CCN hekebolos. One report, no matter how good it is, is never enough.
This is the place where too much Wes is never enough :-)
You'd be taking them to the Better Business Bureau if you bought a washing machine the way we went into the war in Iraq. Wes Clark, CNN Aug 17 2003

wanted to give us blankets? It's like that poor tribe in Africa after 9/11 who wanted to give us cows or something. The initial reaction was, "we don't need your cows." that was a very offensive thing to say and we accepted the cows. They went to a zoo, I think. I hope we gave the tribe in Africa something they needed in return. We could have taken the blankets from Bangladesh and given them to the people in the Himalayas from their friends in Bangladesh. It's all part of creating goodwill. NGOs know how to do this sort of thing. Governments suck at it.

Another great read, ms! I haven't been in a church for years and Wes is probably the only one who could make me want to be there. Halleluiah!
"Some of them put on their cowboy boots and put their feet up on the desk." -Wes Clark

Amazing!
MS, you are the best!!!!
You cannot successfully run the world on comic book slogans and third rate biblical homilies.

God (yes, the pun is intended), I wish I'd been there.
What is the media going to do when it's obvious that the Dems want Wes and not Hillary?
Besides, they've already poured a small fortune into her coffers....can't imagine they'd turn their back on that $$$$$...
You have such a gift for writing and storytelling, ms. Thank-you, once again.
Our Clark cup overfloweth today! And, in keeping with the setting - for the offering plate:

General Wes Clark * * * * 4 Stars Over Texas

What a great way to spend today, ...reading your terrific accounts and absorbing Clark's message, ...in mass on a Sunday! ;)

You paint a beautiful picture of an amazing event! Wow. So happy you got to be there and so thankful you've taken the time to re-create it for us in a way that "takes us there"! ;)
I just read ICB's blog - an article in her local newspaper about the utter lack of "skillful governing" of the thugs in power and how every failure since they've come to power is due to that one fact. She's got some great points re: using that idea - Skillful Government - to shape a strategy of energy independence, etc.
I know you have to get ready to go but if you have time, go take a peek. I think it's a natural for our General.
Thanks so much ms for the recounts, the photos and the love you put into this. It shines through and goes straight to the heart.
Have a safe, non-eventful flight to ma's and a relaxing fun visit! Unfortunately our unusually warm winter has ended and turned into full-blown blustery, snowy, freezing "typical" Feb. weather just today! Dress warm! ;)
Once in a while you get shown the light, In the strangest of places if you look at it right. - Hunter/Garcia
And I'm three thousand miles away. I can imagine what it was like for everyone 30 feet away. The thing is, I really CAN imagine it though, because I've felt it around General Clark before. It's a fleeting moment sitting here in upstate New York, I wish I could have stood in that Church with you for hours, but it's still enough to fire me up yet another notcch.
because it's another fabulous "testament" to Wes. I so wish I had been there, too. Many thanks!!!
And I raise Ruth a Hosanna and a Hot Damn!
Unitary Executive Theory is NOT a theory anymore!
Fabulous report MS - better than some of Edward R. Murrow's "See It Now" programs. Like being in the church and seeing/hearing it for myself. Holy, holy, holy -- indeed.
For gathering us around the campfire and telling heroic tales of wonder.
To be a part of this community, is a privilege and an honor.
Have a safe and happy trip.

Holy Cow!
What a day you had, ms!
I'm thrilled for you and all the people who had the good fortune to be present at this event. I also can't think of anyone better to follow up with the play-by-play then you. You painted the picture.....and it was a masterpiece!
doesn't it? It was almost palpable in his "Real State of the Union Address" and it's intensifying...this is the chapter you commit to memory.
Wes is America's gift and should be received with grace by all. This really ought to be so very easy but we already know that it won't be.
And you are a gift m_s. There is a huge warm spot for you in my heart.
How great must our failure be until we turn in panic and disgrace to a Man of Honor? - Quigley
(wink)
Back at ya!
And yes, it is a new chapter. In fact (teaser to blog #3) someone even commented in the crowd at the evening event how his speech given there on the Constitution was the most passionate and heartfelt speech about the Constitution he had ever heard in his life! Then he followed up by-- when we see you on Fox and all, you seem so measured, so much less ignited and tonight-- if you could incorporate more of that energy in your television appearances, I think America would be able to see what they're looking for --- and get your message better.
(paraphrased of course!)
Wes promised him he would try to inject more passion in his Fox appearances! He really listened. He is such a quick study, there isn't any hurdle he can't jump over.
Get that phone number!
Why not?
I'm not sure how to phrase this question, nor do I want to raise it, but how were they able to do a partisan political event at a church?
I believe (but am not certain) that during NON Church time (not on Sunday!) they rent the space as any other public space for functions -- it becomes rentable square footage during non church scheduled times. It was not staffed by Church elders or priests -- well they did pass a collection bucket (!) but it was for the sponsors to help with the costs.
It's clearly different from when a church IN SERVICE decides to preach politics from the pulpit with so-called men of the cloth delivering the political message.
Again, I have no idea if this is how it's done, just conjecture...
kind comments for me to respond to!
Thanks everyone, and I too wish you had all been there!
California skies are especially clear today since the General came to town again...
You're gonna miss your plane!

I'm know Stephanie will have some good things to say on her show tomorrow morning. She always speaks highly of Wes. I'm sure most of you have heard her show, but if not go to www.stephaniemiller.com and see if she is on in your area. Usually 9am-12am on the east coast --6am-9am west coast. If she is not on in your area, you can stream off her site or she always posts some off the days best bits. It's worth it just to hear her voice guy Jim do Bush riding his tricycle or his impression of Rumsfeld.
You'll be pleased to hear that Keith announced the NCCM 2 and the Concert before he sang Take Us There, and people were eating up the yellow flyers!
I personally invited a handful of people, one very interesting woman professor who was not aware of the blog or the event and she's going to book! As well as a few stray Kossacks who have jumped aboard.
Thank you ms for all you do, and let the rest of us in on - you're a GEM in the real sense. I thought Donna Z did a brilliant job on hezebolos' (I hope I didn't massacre that) diary mentioning you were her friend and dropping bait for NCCM2.
Thank you. Your writing is lovely and I really felt as though I were there; in fact, I found myself holding my breath so as to not make a noise as I was reading some parts.
I have such a strong sense that we have only seen the beginning of what destiny has in store for Wes Clark and for our country.
Renate
Your report was beautifully written. I am so impressed and moved. Thank You.
It seems like every time Wes speaks he gets better. I never heard him live, but I watch him every time I can. It reminds me of the old EF Hutton commercials... I stop whatever I'm doing to listen to what Wes has to say. I know every second is worth listening to.
There's such a buildup of momentum. Yes - Wes gets better and better as each day passes. The thing is - I feel that the momentum is building up on our part too. It's like a new candle is lit everytime a new Clarkie comes on board. There are so many more Clarkies now, so it is becoming brighter! What's nice is that this light is on the outside and in the INSIDE - where a strong wind or storm can't put out the light.
Thanks you so much. Best wishes for your vacation--fun and restful!!
The General gets it right. Competence--What a concept!
Thanks for helping us feel "there", and for the exquisitely written and well thought out report of the events in LA. The excitement, intensity, momentum, gravity of the issues all came through. As someone else said, you can feel the momentum building, building...and it leaves you on the edge of your seat for what comes next.
You spoke of NCCMII, but we've not seen or heard much about it other than dates. If there is more information available, it will help with recruiting attendees.
bring
bring it on!!!! but by that, I mean...
BRING ON THE GENERAL for pres in 08
Your comments reminded me of the night of the Rock the Vote/Black turtleneck debate. Wes and several of his supporters (including me) got on duck tour boats and rode through the city of Boston on our way to the Omni Parker House Hotel were the candidates were preparing for their debate. We got off the DUKW at city hall where we were joined by about 100 more Clarkistas and then ran too the Parker house about two blocks away. The horde followed us and we all poured in to the lobby cheering and screaming. It was like the Beatles first trip to the US. He he. once he got on the elevator we quickly got out of the way and headed out to the street. I think the hotel staff had a collective anurism when they saw the horde. Happy times.
How fabulous that this great, great event was described in such a charming manner. I hope that many non-Clarkies get a chance to read it. They should become converts before they hit the last paragraph.

I'll leave the fundraiser to you as well. You seem to be doing such a good job of it. One comment that really stuck out in my mind was the palpable humiliation of America that the room felt when the General pointed out that Bangladesh had offered us extra blankets.
