"This Week" Open Thread
Submitted by larry on March 5, 2006 - 2:43am.
Since I know folks on the East Coast will be catching the show before I wake up, I wanted to give folks an Open Thread to discuss General Clark's appearance on This Week. Enjoy.
Larry

This is a major interview I will rely on Clarkies for blow by blow since I don't get the MSM over here except for CNN International.
Duncan Hunter is the guy who fired Eric Massa for shaking Wes' hand and refusing to renounce his friendship with Wes.
Eric's piece on the Port scandal linked under "Blog Buzz" on SA front page (from MYDD).

Good morning, CCN bloggers. I got up a wee bit early to make sure I caught the beginning of "This Week". I switched on my ABC affiliate, hoping to catch the local news, but instead I found a special about the all-important earth-shattering Oscar Fashions. UGH.
LET'S DO IT already!!!

from yesterday is correct - I just heard on the C-Span announcement of the Sunday shows that General Clark will be on with a panel of 2 other Generals... The blurb at ABC News "This Week" page hasn't changed to include the others.

Once in a while you get shown the light, In the strangest of places if you look at it right. - Hunter/Garcia
Kept thinking it was the fog of sleep, but they keep announcing that Generals Myers and Williams (who the heck is Williams?) will be on "This Week" with General Clark. Course my suspicious mind is working overtime!
Nothing about Hunter - is he too scared to appear because looks as if he's going to be Abramoffed soon or what?

A little arm twisting from his (Steph's) former bosses, maybe?

its the other side. Basically, they seem to have buried Myers after giving himt he MOF and only dust him off and bring him out for expediency.

...sucks.

Collins (R-ME) was disapoointed that the port deal was being "politicized" by the Democrats. Awww, poor Ms. Collins. She was not prepared to call the deal off, citing "not enough information" her cloak to not piss off the administration.
Meahwhile, Duncan Hunter wants to review ownership of ALL port companies and was sure the UAE port deal would not pass muster. Hunter is certainly trying to make hay, hoping to look like some kind of hero to the folks back home. Too bad he may get sucked into the Abramoff scandal...

Wes sez that port security begins overseas. Thinks the entire security issue needs to be "taken apart" and examined thoroughly.

It doesn't come on here until 10:30

Wes side-stepped the question! He's concentrating on helping get Democrats elected in 2006, sez a 1-party system is dangerous to our democracy.
"America is best served by a strong 2-party system." and wants vigorous hearings and investigations on all the scandals going on in DC now, like the Abramoff scandal, which we're NOT getting now.

I think I'd be pretty ticked off at him if he said anything before November. He's sticking to his plan, and it's a good plan.
Hope someone will post the video clip soon. I like to see his body language when answering, his expressions and inflections. It's just as important as the answers in one sense.

Wes mentioned the NSA domestic wiretapping, the unfinished nine-eleven report, and believes we need to get these investigations moving.

Any timeline would be a huge mistake. We need to use the military leaverage to get a political solution - troop drawdown will not help our leaverage
"We can't just jaw-bone"
"We have to take political leadership on the ground now"
"We can't just walk away from the region"

I rewound to pick up more details!

Wes is interviewed alone..answered questions on Ports, Iraq, Iran, and 2008 run for President, stating he is concentrating on 2006, as we need a strong 2 PARTY system. He explained that we need to get the Sunni's involved in the Iraqi Gov't, to end the possibility of Civil War. Now watch!!! I think Steffy was amazed at the intelligence of Wes...even asked him to explain at one point...but Wes just rolled over him. Thinks the Port issue should be addressed at the foriegn ports, on loading. Once loaded, put America at greater risk....

we'll just have to hang in there for another hour.....♥
"COUNTRY before Party!" -- Wes Clark
I agree. He has learned to use his air time to his advantage. He finished up with stressing we need leadership and how we have had no real investigation on if the administration misused its pre-911 intelligence, Plamegate, Abramoff scandal etc. He stressed he is working to get democrats elected in 2006. He mentioned that we are on the edge of the abyss in Iraq. That we must use the military for the right type of political and diplomatic leverage to get inclusion of responsible Sunni's into the government. The military alone can not solve this problem. We have not be engaged diplomatically
What a lovely message. :)

Cannot use only a military solution.
Mixed message to Iran.
Iran has many differing internal politics and is not just homogenous. Still pushing for a regional discussion.
SAVE OHIO - Fitrakis for Ohio Governor
show is he on?

that the almost exclusive focus on the military has been all wrong, that the solutions in Iraq and in the region will be in who is in control politically, and that Bush has been remiss in not taking the lead in engaging the region in political negotiations to find solutions and give our military the support it needs.

he "agreed" or "disagreed" with Hillary's proposed legislation banning foreign ownership of ports. He said it would open a needed discussion about the issues. He's gotten good at avoiding the soundbite traps and making the points he wants to make.

We should all make a point of downloading it, even if we already have the video--Thanks Ice!
. One way they judge the popularity of the program (and guest list) is by how many downloads they do.

There was a clip showing him before a bunch of flags, and then there was a clip of him in uniform. This ended with Steph saying, "Is a General what this country needs in 2008!!!?"

Blue, pin-stripped suite. Blue silk tie with tan boxes (looks nice).
Giving George hell became George is trying to simplify the ports issue.
all of them, are giving me great big smiles!
And a good GOOD mornin to you too. Isn't it great day!!
Thanks,
Clearsky

In my excitement, I didn't read that he'd already been on in the earlier hour in other cities.
But, I don't think folks around here would mind a 10 a.m. recap.

But only a few minutes to go. Can't wait!!

I've come to the conclusion that the far left over there and the "bring them home now" crowd, are a bunch of unrealistic isolationists. They have a view of the world like that of an ostrich. Wes Clark pointed out, once again in this interview, why so many things are interdependent now.

there - it's part of that community.
We can't just walk away from the region.

he's running around to discuss what, exactly, Dem policy IS (and that we have one, unbeknownst to the Republican media mynas).
Most of my equipment has been failing me these past months, hence my absence. This clip does have a few sound issues, but all in all it's not too bad. I guess it's time to invest in a new studio if I'm going to continue my obsession with politics. Anyway, the clip should be up in another 5 minutes.
Here's the link. It's not on my site.
That was a terrific appearance. I'm so glad to see Wes getting some TIME to express his views.
He definitely is head-and-shoulders above the other "contenders."
Leadership means lifting people up. --Wes Clark

there's no way I would've seen that interview without your help. You sure picked the right day to "reappear" :-)
welcome back!
on edit: well I've just realised Ruth uploaded it as well, so "no way" was probably an exaggeration. But it is great to see you here again and thanks for the clip. We can never have too much Wes!!!
You'd be taking them to the Better Business Bureau if you bought a washing machine the way we went into the war in Iraq. Wes Clark, CNN Aug 17 2003
He was just wonderful. This is the type of interview that Wes needs to do more often. When he has an indepth interview, it is obvious that he has such command of the issues.

a bunch of Washington insiders who wouldn't know what real Americans want or need if it hit them in the face with a 2X4.

the Wet Work on Bill Clinton this morning. He must have said, "Your Boss, Bill Clinton....." to George Steph at least 3 or 4 times.
"COUNTRY before Party!" -- Wes Clark

GWB's been prezdint for 5 years. Can't blame anything on Clinton anymore. It just doesn't hold water.

But there are still many, many people out there who think it was all Clinton's fault. Seriously. And they are nodding along in agreement with that statement right now. Sad isn't it?

"jawboning"
You just got to love this man.........now, will anyone besides us listen?

Wes is for the Dubai ownership of these ports. Wes has done a great job of turning that around to make his point.
"We need to be focusing on how the ports are regulated and how they are being operated abroad." -- Wes Clark
"COUNTRY before Party!" -- Wes Clark
us know how far into the programme Wes is on Fox - might be able to catch both then. They have a house blown up in Los Angeles they're focusing on at present - think that fireworks exploded.

What show?
(And I'll have to find it. I can never remember what channel Faux is because I never watch it unless Wes is on).

were, "General Wesley Clark will be on in a few minutes to talk about this ticking time bomb" or something to that effect.
Guess I changed the channel in the nick of time.

Wes is so fantastic! A true leader is speaking to us, folks! This man knows what he's talking about. Wow! Brilliant!
"COUNTRY before Party!" -- Wes Clark

I don't get ABC (or CBS or NBC or XYZ). Need your summaries guys and gals.

Leadership, leadership, leadership. Gotta love it. That is the problem, isn't it? I think Wes did a great job emphasizing that. How do we make people hear that?

Wes said what he needed to say....wouldn't let Steph side track him.....and had the BEST answer to the 2008 question. Focus on 2006!
This is a keeper!!!
You cannot successfully run the world on comic book slogans and third rate biblical homilies.
After giving his reasoning for focusing on 2006, he then made it clear why the natiion needed to look for someone with foreign policy credentials? We are in a global economy with global problems whether we like it or not.
Now..let me think? Who has foreign policy--security--economic credentials? Well..who's our Supreme Allied Commander Baby? (pssst... that was smoothly done Wes. Of course, it just happens to be the truth.)

Extreme opposition to the transfer of six U.S. port terminals to the control of a Dubai-based company mounts on Capitol Hill. Our headliners, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., chair of the House Armed Services Committee, square off on port security and discuss whether foreign companies should have a stake in critical U.S. infrastructure.
Then, in an exclusive interview, retired Gen. Wesley Clark sits down with me to assess the U.S. campaign in Iraq and Clark's own presidential aspirations. Are U.S. troop levels appropriate to the task at hand? Is Iraq on the cusp of all-out civil war? Is Gen. Clark the Democrats' best shot in 2008 when it comes to the issue of national security?
And to debate the week's politics, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, the Washington Examiner's Bill Sammon and ABC News' George Will join me at the roundtable.
In a special Voices segment, comedian and talk-show host Stephen Colbert offers advice to his friend and boss Jon Stewart on hosting the Oscars.
