Oh Look who now says "energy is a national security issue." The trouble with their plan is they are looking for fuel made from natural gas and coal, as Chevron is proposing for the "oil of this century." The trouble with that is Russia and Iran sit on a huge part of the natural gas, so it's also a fossil fuel that impacts our national security. Rummy has to stop making nice with Chevron, etc...and get busy on real alternative energy sources to fly those jets. Meanwhile, can tanks run on E85? We have that in Kansas. Maybe they could try it at Ft. Riley.

Submitted by CentralMass on May 13, 2006 - 2:59pm.

I suspect they (Tanks) are diesel fueled . Bio-diesel blends have a nomenclature that is similar to ethanol blends.  For example: B50 is a 50-50 blend of diesel and bio-diesel. 100% biodiesel will run just fine in a diesel engine except that straight biodiesl thickens with low temps where as a diesel/biodiesel blend doesn't. That problem can probably be solved as well.

LJM's picture

Is biodiesel, I believe. Maybe tanks could run on it.

Faux tried to spin the decline in the stock market to the USA Today story about the NSA spying. Now, from everything I've read, the market was hit by a rush to put money into commodities, the price and jitters about oil and rising interest rates. Nobody said anything about the NSA story.

Blue State of Mind

Submitted by Larry in KC on May 13, 2006 - 2:21pm.

Yesterday at one of those water-cooler talks, we were exulting in *'s freefalling numbers, and someone asked the frequent question, "but who are the Democrats going to put up in '08?". As I always do, I told them the right answer. However, a good Democrat who I believe could be brought around to the General said no, he's disappeared. She even mentioned Biden as a possible choice for her (I guess his constant presence on the Sunday morning talk shows is worth something!)

Anyway, you and I know that General Clark is oh-so-far from disappearing, but I'd like to hit my colleague with not just a few recent good works off the top of my head... could you post a list of many of his highest profile and best works of the past several months, so I can start bringing her aboard? Thanks!

Tell her to go to www.securingamerica.com and have her listen to the ClarkCasts. She only thinks he's gone, because she no doubt never watches FOX. Tell her what really matters now is to take back the house and senate in November. That is our mission:)

Before I get her to the ClarkCasts, though, I want to inundate her with how productively busy he is, without her having to make even that much effort. Speaking of ClarkCasts, that was you I heard on there, wasn't it?

Hi - this is posted on Kos - please go help if you can:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/5/13/134823/857

Hey folks!  Reporter Thomas Edsall of the Washington Post -- who is nationally known, rather neoliberal, and well-respected by the journalistic establishment -- posted a diary today asking for Kosines to respond to Rahm Emanuel's challenges to Gov. Dean's 50-state strategy.  He's writing a story and wants our analysis and quotes.

Because his title is sort of innocuous and his handle is unknown here, it has scrolled almost all the way down at this point and has only 24 comments, the brunt of them from just a few of us.  Please don't go there to abuse or yell at him, but if you've wanted to talk to a significant national political reporter and make our views known, one just knocked on our door and I don't want people to miss it.  Please check out this diary now.  Again, we don't get chances like this every day, so please don't projectile vomit on him.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/5/13/112238/025

From edsall:

I posed this same question on MYDD.
Could proponents of the 50 state strategy answer Rahm Emanuel's question: Is the rate of spending at the DNC and the investment of money and resources in states without competitive 2006 races worth the possible failure to win back the House and Senate? He argues that Democrats running in 2006 need to have as much get-out-the-vote and television support as possible, and that the DNC under Howard Dean does not appear equipped to provide that support. I would welcome, and like to be able to quote, serious answers to this question. Tom Edsall, Washington Post.

In the May 5 American Way we announced a new site – www.WikiThePresidency.orgset up to allow the general public to keep an ongoing record of White House wrongdoing for all to see. After many of you jumped in to start adding content, our server provider's hard drive irreparably failed and we were told no backups were made.

Well we’ve put it back up – on a new server maintained by a great new vendor. We’ve also returned as much content from the previous incarnation as possible, but we urge you to return and help compile a complete Bush record.

For those of you who didn’t have a chance to read that American Way, read on to find out what a fascinating experiment www.WikiThePresidency.org is.

People For the American Way decided it was about time the public had a single place to read up on the multitude of legally and ethically dubious policies and activities of the Bush Administration. With your help, our new wiki site could be the answer.

Using the same technology as the popular encyclopedia site Wikipedia.org (which is authored entirely by the general public), www.WikiThePresidency.org allows you to post any material you have about Bush administration wrongdoing, edit any material already posted, and create new topic areas at will.

We have launched this site with a small amount of content – just enough so you can see the type of material we seek. It's up to you and your friends to make this a truly useful new site for the nation.

Please keep in mind, this is not a blog for rants against the Bush administration (the world already has plenty of those). It has been created to grow into a resource for those seeking information on White House wrongdoing. Please, post only factual material backed up with links to reputable sources.

Visit www.WikiThePresidency.org today and see what could be possible with a little bit of help from you and your friends. If you can, carve out some time over the next week to input at least one really solid entry based on a recent news article that sticks in your craw. If you’re more the editing type, go into a section and improve other entries with more precise language or better transitions.

This is a site the public could really use – we want you to help build it.

'A majority of Americans initially support a controversial National Security Agency program to collect information on telephone calls made in the United States in an effort to identify and investigate potential terrorist threats, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. . .

A total of 502 randomly selected adults were interviewed Thursday night for this survey. Margin of sampling error is five percentage points for the overall results. The practical difficulties of doing a survey in a single night represents another potential source of error.'

Clinton WH Alumni: WTF?

by Matt Stoller, Sat May 13, 2006 at 02:11:46 PM EST

Ok, so Donna Brazile and Mike McCurry are working for the telcos in the net neutrality fight, Donna Shalala is screwing workers at her new perch at the University of Miami, David Brooks is praising Hillary Clinton's centrism as she holds fundraisers with Rupert Murdoch, Paul Begala is calling organizers nose-pickers, George Stephanopoulos is making millions in a boring establishment show at ABC News, and I've heard rumors that Joe Lockhart is sending around corporate-funded memos to the media saying that Democrats shouldn't tackle the Medicare RX fiasco.

What's going on here?

Karl Rove Indicted on Charges of Perjury, Lying to Investigators
    By Jason Leopold
    t r u t h o u t | Report

    Saturday 13 May 2006

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove.

During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

From Newsweek - "May 13, 2006 - The role of Vice President Dick Cheney in the criminal case stemming from the outing of White House critic Joseph Wilson's CIA wife is likely to get fresh attention as a result of newly disclosed notes showing that Cheney personally asked whether Wilson had been sent by his wife on a "junket" to Africa.

Cheney's notes, written on the margins of a July 6, 2003 New York Times op-ed column by former ambassador Joseph Wilson, were included as part of a filing Friday night by prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald in the perjury and obstruction case against ex-Cheney chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

The notes, Fitzgerald said in his filing, show that Cheney and Libby were "acutely focused" on the Wilson column and on rebutting his criticisms of the White House's handling of pre-Iraq war intelligence."

Times' Frank Rich:  Any 'witch hunt' for traitors should begin in the White House

RAW STORY
5/13/2006

Defending journalists who have been castigated as traitors for exposing government blunders, New York Times columnist Frank Rich writes that any "witch hunt" for traitors should begin in the White House, RAW STORY has found.

"What really angers the White House and its defenders about both the Post and Times scoops are not the legal questions the stories raise about unregulated gulags and unconstitutional domestic snooping, but the unmasking of yet more administration failures in a war effort riddled with ineptitude," Rich writes.

"It's the recklessness at the top of our government, not the press' exposure of it, that has truly aided the enemy, put American lives at risk and potentially sabotaged national security," Rich continues. "That's where the buck stops, and if there's to be a witch hunt for traitors, that's where it should begin."

Ex-CIA Director Porter Goss should not be allowed to "escape into retirement unexamined," Rich argues, calling him "so inept that an overzealous witch hunter might mistake him for a Qaida double agent."

"His mission was not to protect our country but to prevent the airing of administration dirty laundry, including leaks detailing how the White House ignored accurate CIA intelligence on Iraq before the war," Rich writes.

'If provoking the anger of a conservative's conservative like Luttig wasn't enough, another development out of the Justice Department was nearly as stunning. On Wednesday, the Justice Department's point man on government accountability, H. Marshall Jarrett, wrote to Congress saying that he was shutting down his review of the NSA spying probe because his staff was denied access to the agency's files and personnel.

So to review the bidding: Bush's Justice Department is blocked from investigating its own controversial spy program; a leading conservative jurist resigns, reportedly in part over the government's handling of civil liberties; and a big NSA program of eavesdropping on Americans' phone-calling patterns is revealed. Will this be enough to turn public opinion against Bush on civil liberties and terrorism? Given the collapse in public support for the President on so many issues, it wouldn't be surprising.'

I keep seeing and reading that the majority of Americans don't mind the phone monitoring.  I think this is major bs.  You can tell because every single right wing media type is selling this like they havn't sold anything in months.  Even the staunch republicans I know are against this. Appointing Hayden was a Rovian premptive strike manuever.  These guys revealed the identity of a CIA agent. Who in their right mind thinks they won't use illegally obtained phone records for political purposes?

...are taken for granted until they are lost. I can't remember who it was, but he said he was not at all surprised that so many Americans seemed to support the new domestic spying. He was surprised that one-third were concerned! He thought that was incredibly significant.
