Hurricane Katrina Relief for Displaced Students
Be sure to let me know if you are a WESPAC-blogger so I can thank you profusely.
I have just purchased enuf oil pastels, "prang professional" and sketch pencils, etc. to keep approx. 10 students occupied at any given time.
Will wrap and ship this afternoon or tomorrow a.m. at latest.
Best I could do, wish I could have done more. Good luck and best wishes for the students at Glasgow Middle School.

My god Sybil--you are generous. I wish I could give you a big hug.
Thank you so very much. I'm sure the art supplies will further the students' talents and hopefully give them a little therapeutic relief, as well.
A friend of mine told me today that the Red Cross's mission is to provide shelter and food. Seems like FEMA just hands out big contracts to out-of-state companies. Our public schools were woefully inadequate before the storm and the school board registered 6500plus students in the past 2 weeks. My son's school started the year with approx.520 students. As of last Friday they had 150plus new students with more registering everyday. Today, a woman came into my son's school while I was there volunteering. She said she tried to register her daughter at a Catholic school. They are not accepting anymore displaced students(not even Catholic ones). That's the 2nd mother I spoke to that couldn't get her child into the parochial schools. There are quite a few catholic schools in B. R.
Thank you so much.

I loved doing it Geaux. Loved the shopping, the picking and choosing. Art is my thing, always has been. And it will indeed be therapeutic for those kids who have been tragically displaced...all too often discounted, "the practice of Art".
I feel good :)

Geaux, there isn't an art store near me, is it ok to just send the art teacher a check? Who do we make it out to?
Several strong Dems in Minnesota are working with Harris County Texas school systems to collect school supplies for the children they are taking in. They are handling the coordination for 18 school systems. They are in need of pens, paper, pencils, markers, etc. This effort is being coordianted with the Black Dems of Minnesota, black churches of Minneapolis/St. Paul, the Urban League and me for the west metro churches. Please consider donating items to: Harris County Department of Education,
6300 Irvington Blvd. Houston, TX 77022
The Harris County Department of Education Center for Safe and Secure Schools
at 713-696-0770 will be the primary point of contact to facilitate these educational
support needs.
If you would like more information, please email me. Thanks!

I'm hearing you Geaux. I'll see what I can do, copy/pasted info. I know where to buy that stuff relatively inexpensively.
