Eric and Wes in Manhattan 6/19

Events | Fighting Dems | Fundraising

Attending the Eric Massa/Wes Clark event in Manhattan last night was almost like a homecoming. Jacques’ loft, where the event was held, was one of the home bases for the NYC Draft Clark movement and I have fond memories of being there and stapling Draft Clark business cards to mini Clark bars to hand out at a local Democratic Club dinner and making homemade Clark04 buttons on the night that Wes announced he was getting in the race. That night we later paraded out onto Broadway with bags full of mini Clark bars and huge Clark ’04 signs. We were jubilant. We’d successfully drafted our man.
So last night I was back there again and, as it is with these things now, it was a chance for me to catch up with both some of those whom I worked with on the campaign back in ’03-’04 and some of my new internet buddies. (Yes, Icantbelieve…’s husband really does exist! Or at least someone posing as him last night does. haha!)
I met Melange on the way in and we walked up to the fourth floor with a man, now from New Jersey, formerly from Uganda, named Charles and a young woman who was with him.
Eric was already there when I got there, working the crowd. Wes showed up soon after. Cute, he filled out a little name tag for himself “Wes Clark”, you know, in case anyone should forget his name. That’s our “regular guy” Wes.
Tom Rinaldo, who was there with his wife, introduced himself to Wes for the first time but I messed up on the picture I was trying to take of that first meeting. :( I, myself, hardly spoke to Wes. Just said hello, gave him a hug. He was just too surrounded by well wishers. Boy, he is a popular guy in a crowd.
The speeches were great. They were also recorded and the crack CCN transcription team (both Reg and Melange) was in attendance so I imagine there will be a transcript at some point…..
So I’ll just copy Tom’s posts from the GD thread here:
"We are involved in an endless War for nefarious purposes. There hasn't been anything like this since the founding of our Republic, in my opinion."
General Wesley Clark
NYC 6/19/06That is how our good General started out his comments at the Eric Massa fundraiser held in Manhattan last night. Unfortunately I don't have time to blog about it, we got home after midnight and I am packing to very shortly leave on a trip, but I wanted to make sure this quote got recorded.
And our good Commander Massa last night said, among many wonderful things, "Questioning of Government Officials is not dissent, it's the way things are meant to work."
The friendship these men have for each other is something wonderful to be in the presence of. When Eric made his comments, he delivered Democratic Fire and Brimstone onto the Republicans running our nation aground, and Wes was standing off to the side through all of it, grinning from ear to ear, watching his friend get worked up into a righteous fury.
……………………….
Clark said that when he heard in 2002 that Karl Rove planned to run Bush as a War Time President for re-election (Eric Massa used the word "re-selection" in his comments by the way), he immediately put that together with the PNAC plans for multiple military conquests that his military contacts had told him about. When told the Administration wanted War with Iraq, Clark said he asked Why, and Generals he knew said "Sir, when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." They knew it was a mistake according to Clark.Clark said the War on Terror was the perfect war for Republicans to attempt to twist to their political purposes: "They can't say when it is going to end, and if you oppose them you are called "unpatriotic", and advocating for "cut and run". He said: "Sending our young people to War, except as a very last resort, is Unwise, Un-patriotic, and Un-American."
General Clark and Commander Massa are both clearly furious over how this Administration misuses our military.
(He was taking notes….I was trying to take pictures.)
And I’ll just touch on a couple of things.
The speaking area was set up in this big open space and, when people gathered to hear the speakers, they congregated around the edges of the space, close to the walls. Jacques gave some brief remarks, then introduced Wes. When Wes got up to speak, he asked all of those who were ‘lurking around the edges’ to move up closer, like a football huddle…so we did.
It is, as Tom says, a pleasure to watch these two men together. They have such a mutual respect, admiration, really affection for each other…Kind of reminds me of watching Wes and Charlie Rangel together. It’s like you’re witness to something special. And I recalled the first time I met Eric, at a Rangel event that Wes attended, and how excited he was to see “the boss” again.
Wes talked about Eric’s illness and how they had a, basically, ‘good bye, we’ll miss you as we send you home to die’ party. “The Christmas lights were strung in the chateau”, they remembered. I think both men were moved as Wes spoke of it, Eric standing off to the side watching and nodding. It’s hard sometimes to imagine or remember what Eric’s been through. He’s so alive and vital now. It’s hard to remember how close he came to dying.
Wes talked about the neo-cons plans to run through all of these Middle East countries, stuff we’ve heard before….Yet, it seemed there were some in the crowd hearing it for the first time judging by their reactions.
Wes also spoke of what veterans, in particular, can bring to Congress and observed how it just so happens that almost all of the Vets running happen to be Democrats…hmmmmm….
Eric was really fired up for this one. His remarks started a little more laid back but grew in intensity as the speech went on. He related the story of how he came to work for Wes, “That’s why they call them orders, not invitations.” He spoke of taking back the flag from Rove and so many other things. He mentioned his 15 year old daughter, who was in attendance and how, after she saw him speak at one of these functions and saw the intensity, she told him she didn’t think she wanted him to win anymore. If he won, she said, she’d never get any boy to date her. They’d be too scared of her father. He said he told her “Why do you think I’m running?” which got a hearty laugh from the crowd.
He also told of how she’d stolen one of his T-shirts and painted on it “My dad is so not-Kuhl!” How clever is that? They had pins at the event “Not Kuhl”. When I complimented him on his lovely daughter afterwards, he said there would be hell to pay later from her because he embarrassed her. She really is a dear, though. I spoke to her briefly. Nice kid…and quite proud of her dad.
I later spoke to someone from ACT NY who I’ve worked with before. ACT NY is continuing on locally, even as the national ACT has gone south. They are concentrating on local races, NY and PA, it seems, and are considering Eric’s race as one to focus on. They were scouting Eric out last night and the guy I spoke to was impressed….Still, it all comes down, sadly, to money. How Eric does fundraising will make a difference…..
So make sure you donate to Eric’s campaign. You can do it here, through WesPAC’s Act Blue page.
Also, be sure to vote for Eric at Mark Warner’s mapchangers. You have to register with Warner’s PAC but Eric could get $5000 from this so please take the time.
And, finally, I leave you with this, my best (well, really only acceptable) picture of Eric and Wes together….(notice the name tag).

seem so human and real. Eric has to win. I voted for him as you requested.

So happy you got to be there! What a great photo! :D

It was nice meeting you...and your guy...too. :)

Thanks for the account of the NYC event. I hope Gen. Clark will come back to Central NY to campaign for Eric here during the summer or fall.
I witnessed the same mutual respect and camaraderie between Clark and Massa last May at a small event in Ithaca. They both have a unique mix of military experience, intelligence, and concern for humanity that is completely lacking in the current administration.
I hope Massa gets elected for his own sake and for what he will be able to accomplish in Congress. It would also be a great help to have him as an incumbent congressman, campaigning for a Clark Presidential bid!

They do make a wonderful team...And it would be quite fine to have Congressman Massa campaigning for our Wes in 2008.

It was great to hear General Clark's NY supporters are still supporting him. And that is a very fine picture.

There are actually a number of folks who worked on the Clark campaign here in NYC who are now fairly heavily involved in Eric's campaign....and, of course, still supporting Wes and hoping he chooses to run again...That's nice.

Nicely detailed report, as usual. I especially liked this part:
"Wes talked about the neo-cons plans to run through all of these Middle East countries, stuff we’ve heard before….Yet, it seemed there were some in the crowd hearing it for the first time judging by their reactions."
An important reminder for us to keep talking about this issue to everyone. I think it gives people a different perspective on where we are today.
Thanks again for posting.

It was surprising to me to think that these people hadn't heard it before but there were some behind me who were just aghast when Wes said this...

I invited a few "newbies" there. They were almost "giddy" over Wes. It's fun to watch new people meet him. They were amazed with the way he treated the crowd. You know, it's little things, like the nametag, that Wes does that make people realize he's not enamoured with himself.
Wes spent plenty of time with the crowd and he stayed to listen to Eric's whole speech. It really was terrific to see the two of them together. You could just feel the mutual admiration. That was there at NCCM, but it was much more intimate this time, especially after Wes's "huddle up!"
Actually, he didn't yell, "Huddle up!" He did it just like Carol said. We'll have to teach him to just yell, "Huddle up!" I think that would be hysterical.

I love that...It would be great if Wes called that out.
And it is really interesting to see people's impressions upon first encountering Wes.

Thanks for taking the time, Carol.
In the Forward Together poll, please vote for Bill Winter in the West.

If not us, WHO? If not now, WHEN?

And, yep, I remembered your guy Bill in Warner's poll..It's great because, as they are in different brackets or whatever, you can vote for both he and Eric, Stan.
I forgot to mention that I met Lois Murphy's sister at the event last night. Lois is running in PA and is also on Warner's poll.

This is wonderfully written- so intimate, such an eye for detail- I feel like I was there. I love the endless circle of the home made Clark 04 buttons from Draft Clark days meeting Wes's handwritten name tag. So telling!! :)
The good will this man can generate is truly amazing.
And Massa is a pistol- in a good way. Doesn't pull any punches.
Thanks for taking the time to recount the evening.

about the circle of the buttons and name tag...
And Massa is a pistol...He beat some pretty darn nasty odds with the cancer...Let's hope he'll do it again this November...

Thanks so much!

I am really sorry to hear that Eric Massa and his family had to go through such difficult times… and it’s wonderful that he survived cancer.
They both look true buddies. And I have to say, and I know a lot of gals here like to see what Gen. Clark is wearing, but that is a very beautiful tie; and the golden one when he wore it for the Texas Democratic Convention. When I saw how Mrs. Clark looked beautiful in her golden dress when she received her Lifetime of Service Award, I though about both Gen. Clark and Mrs. Clark as a golden couple. (sorry had to mentioned this)

How true...and, yes, the tie was quite nice. :)

It's such a joy to read your accounts. I love the detail that you notice. And you really capture the warmth of this event. It's so wonderful seeing the General and the Commander working together (again)!

I'm glad you enjoyed the account...Makes writing it worthwhile.

Thanks Carol! Nice pics! :)
Those 2 photos with Massa and Clark are really great, in fact. The first one is very interesting. Massa appears to be wearing a pin that reads "FDR" and a button of JFK's or Robert Kennedy's pic. I assume that they're authentic; and excuse my history, but are they New Yorkers(??)

Eric did have an FDR pin on, as well as a photo pin of JFK.
FDR was born in Hyde Park, NY, was a New York State Senator and Governor of NY before being elected President.
And, at one point, when the boys (John and Bobby, etc) were young, I do believe the Kennedys lived somewhere in NY...for at least a little while.
Oh, and I had other really bad pictures of Wes and Eric....I only put up the presentable ones. haha

From JFK to switching to something about 60’s? That is the last picture where he has his eyes closed.

Yep, I think it switched to "The Man for the Sixties". I also think someone there must have given him that pin because I don't think he had it on earlier in the evening.

Your nostalgia brought back such great memories. Coming on three years. Simply amazing.....and here we still are. :)
I'm so glad General Wes is speaking about how we came to invade Iraq. I hope he does a lot of it between now and November. Wish more would, as well. I find so many don't understand where we find ourselves today...or what to do about it....because they don't know the WHY. I think they are ready to hear it now.....and must.
Thanks for this account of the evening, Carol.
Your pictures are very good, Carol, and I really enjoyed them. Looks like Wes does collect a crowd around him.

One of the best pictures of Wes and Eric I've seen - the the campaign logo in the background. Luv it and will use it (do I need permission).
Really neat about Eric's daughter. Very Cool (but Not Kuhl).
Noel

Please do use it, Noel...I'd be honored...

Thank you Carol for this upbeat report. I've read the diary several times and have no idea what took me so long before I commented. The pictures are great. What creates the best image for me, is so many Clarkies together...and operation huddle.
You have not converted a man because you have silenced him.--J. V. Marley
Thank you so much for this fantastic report (and Tom) and bless you both. You have no idea how much I needed to read some good words today... Really touched my heart.
Go Eric, GO Wes! Operation Huddle!
Thanks again. ("Lucy") :-)
Are you the person who had General Clark autograph your license plate?

I don't have a car or a license plate....But if I had one, I'd love Wes to sign it. :)

I didn't think people who lived in NYC generally had cars, but there is a picture on ICB's Wes screensaver of a woman getting a license plate signed by Wes. He's in a tux and I thought the event was in New York. I remember the woman posting about it on CCN, but don't remember who it was.

Some people have cars here but I think that would be more trouble than it's worth...
I never saw that screensaver but I think my little Godson is on there, a little blond boy standing next to a stooping down Wes and saluting.

Here's a couple of little mini video clips I took with my camera....
Wes - "Let me tell you something...."
Eric - "Without you I wouldn't be here...."
Sorry about some of the camerawork...There were people videotaping the whole thing crossing in front of me at times....
Also, let me know if they play OK...They looked fine when I tried on my Mac with Safari at home but the audio is out of synch looking at them on my PC with IE at work....hmmmm....
Oh well, just a little more of a taste of the night...

and what a wonderful time it sounds like everbody had at the event. I wish Warner would donate as much money to each candidate running for congress as he did to put on the party in Vegas. That would speak volumes for him in the grassroots community, which is what seemed to be the netroots discomfort with his party in Vegas. They would rather have the money go to candidates, than a big party. I hope that's a lesson not wasted on Warner. He's got to do more than just this thing to get people to sign up to his web site. Everybody is doing this now. They all have to do more. We have too many good candidates for them not to do more this year as Wes is doing!!
