Judge: Green was wrong

A Wisconsin court has confirmed that Congressman Mark Green violated Wisconsin's campaign finance laws when he transferred $468,000 in illegal special interest money

A Dane County Circuit Court judge ruled today that the State Elections Board was correct when it ordered Congressman Mark Green to divest his campaign of the illegal money.

In a written opinion issued, Judge Richard Neiss denied Congressman Greens motion for an injunction to stop a State Elections Board order instructing Green to divest himself of the illegal money.

Wrote Judge Neiss: The bottom line is that the Elections Board reached the correct result.

Judge Neisss ruling is in accordance with the complaint filed by the non-partisan Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, the ruling of the bipartisan State Elections Board, and the findings of the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

All of them have found Congressman Green in violation of Wisconsin's campaign finance laws.

Congressman Green's response? To say that as a Congressman, he can pick and choose which laws to follow, and these laws don't apply to him.

Outrageous.

What are others saying about Congressman Green's illegal transfer?

These laws need to be enforced. U.S. Rep. Green should not be allowed to spend this money on his campaign for Governor. Wisconsin Democracy Campaign Advocacy Director Beverly Speer, Associated Press, 8/31/06.

Green's action in converting federal funds to a state campaign was contrary to both state and federal law. -- Department of Justice Legal Brief, Page 27.

Wisconsin campaign laws were created to limit the influence of special interest and big business on Wisconsin politicians. PACs that were not registered in Wisconsin tainted the money transferred by Congressman Green. The money from these unregistered PACs is in violation of state law. State Elections Board Member Jacob Burns, Libertarian Party of Wisconsin, 8/31/06.

It's time for Congressman Green to stop pointing fingers at everybody but himself, and do what any ordinary Wisconsinite has to do--obey the law.

Retroactive forced honesty doesn't compensate for the original lack of integrity, but he should give the money back.

Thanks!
