"Generals and colonels can only lose wars, not win them. It is the job of the generals to make sure the troops are equipped and arrayed in a way that will allow them to accomplish the mission.  But the fighting and winning comes from the troops, not the top brass.  It is the grunts and the low-level officers that actually make the sacrifices and deliver the victory.

Political campaigns are no different.  I can stand in front of this room through November 7th, and not deliver victory.  Fancy speeches will not win back Congress.  It is you, donating what you can, talking to your friends, making phone calls, and knocking on doors.  It is you, sacrificing time that could be spent with your families because you believe we can build a better future together.  It is only you on the front lines who will deliver victory in the fall."

In a speech at my son's university, Ann Coulter told her audience -- of college students -- that their professors were "zealots" who "teach the pagan religion of liberalism."

During the Q&A after the speech, one student -- apparently well-briefed by Coulter's staff -- asked how he should handle professors who expect students to parrot "their liberal opinions" on exams.  (Coulter's answer:  "Lie.")

I didn't attend the speech, though I hope the next student asked how students should handle professors who demand that they (the students) have sex with unicorns.  That's about as common as a professor expecting students to parrot anything on an exam.

The subtext of Coulter's remarks, of course, was that students should not trust their professors or the university to provide them with "real information."  Instead, they should weigh each statement in a textbook or lecture against their (the students') ideology.  Only if it passes a conservative litmus test is it even possible that the statement might be true.

In short ... Coulter was arguing against critical thinking, or trust in the academic and scientific methods by which we gain knowledge.  She was arguing against knowledge itself.

Because while we've all been told that "knowledge is power," Coulter knows something else:

Ignorance is power too.  It's the power to be swayed by the most craven appeals to "truthiness," regardless of truth.  And it is by that power that conservatives hold on to the drones who follow them.

"Damn you, Ronald Reagan!" hahahahah.... sorry.

If liberalism is a pagan religion, where can I sign up? I guess if she means Deist, she's onto something, at least as far as the founding fathers go.

Some of her bretheren like Scarborough have been retooled to meet the demands of the upcoming Democratic sweep, it's the oddest thing. They're transitioning him to entertainment news!

I don't even enjoy hearing what outrageous new remarks Coultergeist has made, it is an embarrasment that anyone anywhere would cut her a check with their organization's name on it. Maybe some student groups could sue their schools for violating the whatever code of good or ethical conduct they have.

And it's a shame the louder we scream the more press & attention she gets. That same musty whiff of sulphur that attends Rumsfeld - a smell I imagine would waft up say if one found a German issued WWII overcoat buried beneath the floorboards of a farmhouse used for covert white power meetings somewhere in Virginia - clings to Coulter. It is unmistakable.

I also think she has whatever mental malady Zell Miller suffers from & I'm sure if we could compare scans of their brains we would see evidence of severe lesions, or under or overdevelopment in certain quadrants.  I'm saying this because she, like Miller, absolutely believes what she asserts.

At least Baghdad Bob was funny.

& that is soooo interesting to me, though I don't perceive myself as being very scientifically minded.

I'm not the biggest Deepak Chopra fan in the world but I used to have this magnificent quote of his from a book that I got to typeset when I worked in the field of book design- something about the infinite variations in the infinity of the physicality of the nooks & crannies of the cerebral cortex & the undulations of the grey matter- I used to have it taped to the wall over my desk... I'll have to look for it, it was so poetic/profound. Okay, I'm on a mission.

Darn it!!! It's amazing I can't remember two or three lines of text I deliberately isolated & exposed myself to for so long! "They" do say everything you've ever experienced is locked away & recorded in that big bad 90% of your hard drive/brain we never "use!"

& this tracks with the frozen-ness of one side of Cheney's face, & the tendency among neo-cons & righties (political) to literally be thin-lipped or lipless, like serpents-  it's something novelists often remark on...

Umm ... has he been polling Al Qaeda?  If so, I'd sure like to know how, because whoever conducted that poll could have rounded them up in the process.

Has he been reading polls from Iran and North Korea on the U.S. elections?  I haven't seen any.

And what if Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Canada also wanted the Democrats to win in November?  (The polls I've seen suggest a majority in each of those countries does.)  Is it good because our friends want it, or bad because our enemies want it?

Call To Action: Use It Or Lose It

In the 2006 elections, Democrats have put far more Republican-held seats in play--upwards of 60--than nearly anyone previously imagined possible. This incredible number of competitive districts is a testament to all of the work Democrats have done over the past two years expanding our reach beyond a narrowly targeted range of districts and voters. However, since our fundraising has not increased at the same rate as our ability to put districts into play, the situation also presents us with a problem. Simply put, Democratic Party committees, and Democrats in some surprisingly competitive races, do not have the cash to fully fund 60 challenges to Republican-held districts at this time. For example, Larry Kissell in NC-08 has less than $90 cash on hand, and both the DCCC and the DNC are about to take out loans of ten million dollars.

However, while Democratic Party committees and Democratic challengers do not have the funds to fully target 60 Republican-held House districts, House Democrats as a whole do in fact have that money. According to the latest FEC reports, 69 Democratic House incumbents, each with more than $200,000 in their campaign accounts, are either facing no opposition for re-election, or are facing token Republican opposition that has failed to raise more than $10,000. Combined, these 69 incumbents have roughly $50,000,000 in their campaign bank accounts. If each of these 69 incumbents were to give 30% of their campaign funds either directly to competitive Democratic challengers and / or to the DCCC, that would make $15,000,000. Then, we would indeed have the money to fully target 60 Republican-held seats. This money is out there, and we are not using it. With so many campaigns in need of more money, it will be a tragedy if we do not use it now. This isn't about paying dues--this is about taking advantage of an exceptional opportunity that we may not have again for two decades.

Today, I am asking you to call the unopposed, or barely opposed, Democratic Representatives in your home state with more than $200,000 in their campaign bank accounts and ask them to donate 30% of that cash directly to Democratic House challengers and / or to party committees. Along with the help of several outstanding volunteers, I have put together a webpage that details the 69 Democratic House incumbents who we need to target. It tells you who these Democrats are, what districts they represent, and how much money they have in their campaign accounts. It also provides you with a phone numbers to contact their campaign office. If no one is answering there, it also provides you with phone numbers for Washington D.C. offices. If no one is there as well, one of those two numbers should provide you with a district office number to call.

Use this webpage to call each of the representatives in your state that appear on this list, and ask them to use 30% of their campaign funds in order to take advantage of this remarkable political landscape. You can see the list here:

Use It Or Lose It

When you call, make sure you are polite. You can also expect to receive pushback when you call, because many of these Democrats has already given to both the DCCC and / or directly to Democratic challengers. However, make it clear that because we have put so many seats in play, we all need to give far more than usual. This is a conservative ask, only 30%, and it will be used to fund a once in a generation opportunity. Thirty percent of more than $200,000 won't cripple anyone. Some have already given much more. It won't make anyone more vulnerable in 2008. It won't require anyone to lay off staff. It won't present serious obstacles for the Representative if s/he runs for higher office. It will, however, allow us to fully fund competitive challenges in districts where we may not be competitive again for years. We need to use this money, or lose this opportunity.

Please, make these phone calls to Representatives in your state. Urge your unchallenged Democratic Representatives to use their campaign money to fund our competitive districts by giving to Democratic challengers and Democratic committees. We have the money to compete far and wide--we need to use it now.

In the comments, let us know what the office says when you call. Please tell the office that if the campaign pledges the 30% goal or higher, we will publicly five them credit.

Since the article excerpted below is from washingtontimes.com, it does appear that the Repubs are busy wondering about who the new House Speaker will be, come January, and how that will affect them.
[I found this a totally fascinating article. Exciting.]

Excerpt:

"Pelosi no shoo-in for job as speaker
By Charles Hurt

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
October 20, 2006

" Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's prospects for becoming the nation's first female House speaker depend not only on a Democratic victory in November but also on her ability to prevent any Democrats from voting against her -- primarily centrists opposed to her liberal stances.

At least one Democratic House candidate has pledged not to support Mrs. Pelosi, and others in conservative districts have refused to commit their support -- potentially leaving Mrs. Pelosi shy of the 218 votes required for the chamber's top post.

Democrat Charlie Stuart, who hopes to unseat Republican Rep. Ric Keller in Florida, already has said he opposes Mrs. Pelosi and would prefer Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, the more conservative No. 2 Democrat in the House whose strained relations with Mrs. Pelosi have been well-chronicled on Capitol Hill.

"He's a centrist," Stuart spokeswoman Sultana Ali said of the Florida Democrat. "His values really are more in line with Steny Hoyer than Nancy Pelosi."

At least three other Democrats contacted by The Washington Times refused to commit their support to Mrs. Pelosi, whose San Francisco district is far more liberal than the districts that are up for grabs in this election.

Ordinarily, a party's leadership structure is set by the caucus in advance, and all members are expected go along with the decision. In the eight years Rep. J. Dennis Hastert, Illinois Republican, has been speaker, he's never had a protest vote cast against him.

Mrs. Pelosi, whose voting record is considerably more liberal than many of her fellow Democrats, has never enjoyed that luxury. In last year's election for speaker, one Democrat opposed her for the top post.
Four Democrats opposed her in 2003, with three of them simply voting "present" as a protest.

Such protest votes are a sign of dissension within a party. But in the upcoming Congress -- where Democrats could hold the majority by just one or two seats -- any members who vote for someone other than Mrs. Pelosi or simply decide not to vote could trigger parliamentary mayhem.

If Mrs. Pelosi were to fail to win, the speakership would go to the highest vote-getter, most likely Mr. Hastert. Democrats would later win it back by settling on a leader after an intraparty showdown that could pit Mrs. Pelosi against Mr. Hoyer.

But many insiders say Mrs. Pelosi has already moved to protect herself from Mr. Hoyer by privately encouraging another conservative Democrat -- Rep. John P. Murtha of Pennsylvania -- to announce earlier this year he will run for the party's No. 2 position if Democrats gain control of the chamber.

Mr. Murtha, who is conservative on many issues but has lately become a hero of the left for demanding that troops be withdrawn from Iraq, is considered a formidable challenger."

Help Organize The EARLY VOTE Movement To Protect Our Registrations

Here is an action page to organize your friends to early vote and to
report any problems you experience to give legal activists the evidence
to take action and DO something about it.

ACTION PAGE: http://www.peaceteam.net/earlyvote.php

We are already hearing reports of secret purging of the Democratic
voter rolls in various states, just the way we know for a FACT things like
this happened in the last couple elections.  At least some of these
rumors are most certainly true.  The problem is, if we wait until election
day to move proactively to head off such things it will be that much
harder to overturn or reverse them.  The question is, what can we DO to
prevent such wrongdoing BEFORE we have all the evidence.  To head it off
at the pass, so to speak.

The answer is to get AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE to early vote, to test
the integrity of our voting system.

Then, if there are purging issues revealed in particular states, we
need everyone to come to this page and submit a problem report that we can
refer to legal activists to build the case that will give them the
evidence to do something about it.  This is something we must do anyway,
lest we become a victim to a repeat of other vote suppression schemes
which have employed underallocation of voting machines, shortages of
provisional ballots, polls that aren't open on time, and on and on.

We CANNOT wait until election day and cross our fingers that there will
not be even more dirty tricks than last time.  The recent primary
elections in places like Maryland have already demonstrated that electoral
train wrecks are more likely than not in some jurisdictions.  But if we
early vote in massive numbers we can ameliorate most of the problems we
know we can expect.  It is easier in all cases, you will wait LESS time
in line, and you can be sure you at least had a chance to vote.

It is sheer lunacy to wait until election day on the HOPE that all will
go well, when every indicator is that certain partisan secretaries of
state have it planned to not go well.

We need student groups to organize their campuses to carpool their
friends to the appropriate election offices.

We need community activists to carpool as many of their neighbors as
possible to vote NOW, and not face possibly longer lines on election day
itself.

Especially if we are hoping for a large turnout, we must do these
things to protect our vote.

Bookmark this special one click action page which will allow you to
report and make a record of any problems you have experienced with your
voting registration when you try to early vote.  Be sure to bring all
possible identification with you, and if you experience any problems at
all, please immediately return to this page and submit your activist
report.  Then if want to also report your experience to your daily local
newspaper, you can select that additional recipient option below.

ACTION PAGE: http://www.peaceteam.net/earlyvote.php

Also use this page to help organize all your friends to get out and
early vote.  If you enter the email addresses of all your friends, they
will get the text of this alert with the subject "Join Me In Early
Voting."

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed
to be ours.

SAN DIEGO - Thousands of U.S. troops are being barred from overseas duty because they are so deep in debt they are considered security risks, according to an Associated Press review of military records.
The number of troops held back has climbed dramatically in the past few years. And while they appear to represent a very small percentage of all U.S. military personnel, the increase is occurring at a time when the armed forces are stretched thin by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We are seeing an alarming trend in degrading financial health,” said Navy Capt. Mark D. Patton, commanding officer at San Diego’s Naval Base Point Loma.
The Pentagon contends financial problems can distract personnel from their duties or make them vulnerable to bribery and treason. As a result, those who fall heavily into debt can be stripped of the security clearances they need to go overseas.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) today issued the following statement on the suspension of a Democrat House Intel Committee staffer pending review of the possibility that the staffer illegally leaked sensitive intelligence to The New York Times:

"We are a nation at war and intelligence is one of the most valuable tools we have to fight terrorists. Intelligence should never be used as a political weapon.

"It is absolutely necessary that the House Intel Committee conduct a thorough review of the illegal leak of intelligence to The New York Times in war time. I support Chairman Hoekstra's decision to suspend a staffer who may have orchestrated the leak until all the facts are known.

"I hope Democrats would never knowingly and illegally leak sensitive information just to score political points. And that's what an investigation would determine. I would expect anyone who is found to have illegally leaked such information to be terminated from government employment and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"The safety and security of the American people is too important to risk with partisan political games."

HELENA - The U.S. Senate's top Democratic leader on Thursday promised Senate candidate Jon Tester a seat on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee "as soon as possible" if Tester defeats Republican incumbent Conrad Burns next month.

At a news conference in Billings, Democratic Sen. Max Baucus released a statement from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., pledging to give Tester a coveted seat on the committee, regardless of whether Democrats wrest control of the Senate from Republicans.

"Jon Tester is a man of integrity and a man that I look forward to working closely with in the U.S. Senate," Reid's statement said.

"Jon has proven to be a great leader in Montana, and I know he will bring his values of hard work and honesty to Washington."

we will still have many "Dems" like this who will likely hold back any progress being made on many of the issues the Repubs control by their majority status.

yes Jen, winning back the house(s) is only the first step...we will have to keep yelling loud and long at our own party reps

nearly all of rep Ford's stances are 180 deg. out of phase with mine, (S.S., Geneva Conventions, you name it...he plays ballwith the R's) the best we can hope for is that he's in lock-step with TN-eeans and gets the damned seat...

What do we want them to do once they control again? With Bush as President - it's sort of hard to accomplish anything. I think the only thing that could be done is blocking some of Bush's wishes.

I'm still not sure it's a good thing to win control of either house right now. I'm thinking it would be better to gain many, but just short of control. That way - REPUBLICANS will be blamed for IRAQ still being bad in two years. Voters will LOVE Dem's by then...

I fear what the GOP will do with us under partial or full control. They will put the blame of Iraq onto us.

Just an opinion.

Just to let you guys and gals know, for full disclosure I am not a citizen of your country although my Mom is, I am actually from your neighbouring country to the NOrth. I am a Canadian who happens to frequently drop by this website because of Gen.WEsley Clark. I came to know the great man about or during the lead up to his nomination, I mean running for the nomination to lead and represent the Democratic Party as the Presidential nominee. I was really investigating a lot of potential candidates at that time, but none of them struck a nerve with me and my gut. I think the first time or heard of Gen.Wesley Clark was on the now defunct show crossfire. Immediately, I sought and googled everything about Gen.Wesley Clark all the pros which are very impressive and the cons as well. I must admit especially after watching the American Son video, I had goosebumps and had some strong emotional connection with my being. It may sound to corny but it was and still is the truth, before knowing Gen.Clark I have always have the inclination to believe that most general officers are pricks. I am a son of a Military officer though not of your great country or my adopted country but of the Republic of The Philippines. Gen.Wesley Clark, I believe have the vision and a new strategy that the United States sorely needs, to combat terrorism, poverty, globat competition from rising economic giants such as China and Inidia. Most of all I believe what hampers Gen.Clark candidacy is his brutal honesty,a quality as such very rare nowadays. There are so much more I wanted to write about Gen.Wesley Clark my hands can't simply keep up with my head as it so happens I tend to make typing errors. I do thank you sir and maam for reading my post.

My daughter in law is from the Philippines and my sister is Canadian so...a double welcome from me.

This is not a time for a candidate who will offend no one; it is time for a candidate who takes clear stands and kicks ass.....Molly Ivins

many of us here were struck in the same way you were by General Clark. Just a "knowing" that we were being offered a gift by this man being willing to continue serving our country, as he has his entire life.

Welcome to CCN! Now, if Repubs retain control in Nov. and General declares he won't run in 2008, would Canada welcome us? ;)

Welcome and thank you for a fine post! I'm a "Clarkie" from "Draft Clark" days. The first Clarkie I connected with on-line was a Candadian called "Cassy." She was fantastic. She actually got actively involved with Wes' campaign. She was in NH with her homemade signs. I didn't make it to NH, but Cassy was the one who made me feel comfortable to post often. It opened the door to getting to know so many other Clarkies. With time, I got very involved. She was a true inspiration and FUN!

86 Legislators Score "D" or "F" on Vets Issues

In Washington, who really supports the troops? Here are the facts.

Sure, politicians say they support the troops. But whose votes back up their rhetoric, and who's just wearing an American flag lapel pin?

Now there's an easy way to know for sure. The nonprofit, nonpartisan Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's Action Fund has tallied up every Congressional vote cast on troops' and veterans' issues for the last five years.

We've crunched the numbers, and given every legislator a letter grade - the IAVA Congressional Rating. We have created a groundbreaking new web interface that will allow you (and every American) to find out for themselves where politicians stand on the issues.

Check your representatives' IAVA Congressional Rating at www.iavaaction.org.

The results are disappointing, to say the least. Fewer than one-quarter of House and Senate members scored an A. Eighty-six members got a D or an F.

would definitely welcome our brothers and sisters from our southern border. My country compared to yours are more liberal and open minded compared to the United States. The religious groups or any religious groups of any denomination have not yet atleast not yet have the stronghold to any of our political parties. Not that they are not trying it is just that the Canadian psyche are quite different than the American people. i.e. Universal health Care,Daycare, the role of the military and its missions like the one in Afghanistan. Although to my dismay our current P.M.Stephen Harper is kind of mimicking the sloganeering the I often see and observed in the American political system.
