New VoteVets Ad: "Because of Iraq"
Submitted by Wes Clark on November 1, 2006 - 11:37am.
Because of Iraq
A blunt new ad says the world is more dangerous… because of Iraq.
VoteVets Action Fund made up of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans, is today unveiling an ad that directly takes on the now-infamous “These Are the Stakes” ad that began airing earlier this month.
Featuring four Iraq veterans and VoteVets.org Advisory Board Member, retired General Wesley Clark, the ad reminds Americans that the next time they see ads declaring the world is a more dangerous place, they should remember it is that way, because of Iraq.

"Because of Iraq" Anthony Flores, Iraq War Veteran: "Because of Iraq, Osama bin Ladin is still a threat." Robert Loria, Iraq War Veteran: "Because of Iraq, our military is spread too thin." Joseph Kramer, Iraq War Veteran: "Because of Iraq, there are more terrorists in the world." General Wes Clark (ret.): "Because of Iraq, America is less secure. So if you see commercials telling you to be afraid of terrorism.... Remember, it's because of Iraq." |

Thank you, Vote Vets & thank you, General Clark, as well as so many like Max Cleland, IAVA, etc. - for helping save the dems from themselves & for helping the Democrats actually locate the better angels of their nature- we knew they were there all along! :)
We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stre[t]ching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Maybe they could have specified that it was because of the Iraq WAR, but I think people know what they mean.
I am a Veteran who is proud to help fund this ad.Great job !!
...however, the Bin laden/Iraq statement kind of leaves ground for confusion.
A majority of folks get it right about that, and people who still believe otherwise are most likely to no vote Democratic anyways.
It's good to give people who served a direct voice and podium to present their views.

I think the batteries should be named after Gen. Clark, GWK batteries.
The batteries can be used for the new Buffalo vehicles, tanks, and all those fancy military aircraft so that Halliburton’s belly stops growing… Yep, big powerful GWK batteries. And we can save the environment at the same time...

Seems like it should be on their front page, doesn't it?

They are normally shown just below the spot where you can vote, add it to your favorites list, etc. Look right under that area. If it has received honors, it should be located there.

As the niece, great-niece and great-great niece of veterans (Korean, WWII, and WWI), I am proud to support this ad.
Please have Harold Ford Jr. emphasize miner safety, as a way to connect with voters in the coal valley region where the attack ads hit him the hardest.
There's been mining accidents this year, more than last year, it is time we put the technology and people ahead of energy policy.
Harold Ford will do it in a way to recognize positive change. The interests of lobbies will sometimes block true progress, so we must work with business to help them accelerate new safety procedures. Work with business to do it, audit exisiting structures and credit companies that build more safety to their designs. This via reward measured tax schedules and deferments.
Unions can make certain the manpower hours are part of the solution. Mines can certify their safety for the purpose of improved insurance ratings. Safer work is smareter work and will remain more effecient.
Go to bat for the people who do the 'boots on ground' hard work in the energy industry. Do it in a way that business can carry it forward. Do it in ways that invite more business capital to become part of the solution.
It could really help Harold Ford Jr. develop support in key areas as a Senate leader. It would reward the good faith of Kentucky/Tennessee/Pennsylvania/West Virginia/Virginia people who value work and support Wes Clark.
Finally, Harold Ford Jr. can advance the same cause with his statesmanship. For safety you make two tunnels to a mine. In the same way people who usually vote Republican in that part of the state can make a safe sure vote. Harold Ford Jr. can help them carve a new passage to the future, one that rewards everyone in their efforts.
One tunnel partisanship can invite trouble. Harold Ford Jr. has the safe passage that lets people work a new direction towards the same common goal. Working in new ways, forward to a better future, part of his vision.
You can say that better than I can, Wes. Take the opportunity to help Harold Ford Jr. make a statement about solutions for all of Tennessee and the surrounding area. We're in this together.
for the DNC:
Given Kerry's recent massive screwup and the quality/message/messengers of this ad, I'd dump every dime you have into running it over the airwaves.

and saw this ass-kickin' ad.
Man - that's powerful. Can't wait to show it to the hubby when he gets home.
Wow!
Is this slated to run in Tennessee? It would certainly help after what people perceive Kerry said around here!

For a sec I thought I had involuntarily clicked on the video again.. but looked up at the TV and there it was.. only BIG! :D
It is so great that this ad will run through the election on FNC and CNN! If we keep donating this ad will put Clark front and center for 08 contender talk after the 06 election.

... or not ;p
My guess is that Rove will need one too, or admit from madness that he's a jihadist, himself.
Incredibly powerful commercial... H*/% S/>!`|`!! ... Aired on FOX too?
YEEEeeee-OUUUCHHE!... did That REALLY HOIYT!
A MAJOR COUNTER-OFFENSIVE by our General!! :D

The message behind “Because of Iraq”, or I should say “Because of Oil”, was a great way to get someone’s attention.
I thought the white background didn't give that serious tone as the music did. Maybe a green background would have had a better effect since it’s associated with the military (and seriousness). And I didn’t realize that the three gentlemen were Iraq veterans because I didn’t really read their titles until I saw Robert Loria. Maybe if the third person was a wounded/disabled Iraq veteran than there would have been more emphases about them and why they were speaking out... And sometimes the viewers don’t read names and titles in 60 sec but are caught up on what the person was saying or the person's characteristics. Also, more ethnic diversity and both gender would have given that final push for being simple and even more powerful ad. Just my opinion.
The reason I wrote this was because when I saw it for the first time and in 60 sec it didn’t grab me as many political ads out there. In addition, something was missing when “Because of Iraq” was said at the end. And perhaps the ad was done this way because there was a specific aim or certain reason that I haven’t realized it myself, I don’t know…
Anyway, the message was still powerful and I am sure the ad will give its effect… And that was a great counter attack, or I should say controlling the spread of fear, by emphasizing the right wing "Terrorist" ad exist because of “Iraq”...

Perfect perfect perfect!
I hope we can raise all kinds of money and make this air everywhere.
Thanks Wes

NY Times BLog Eye on Tennessee has a piece on the ad...
Just when we thought we’d seen and heard a lot in the Tennessee Senate race, along came two ads today that seem to dig even deeper into the divide on the Iraq war and terrorism.
The VoteVets group we’ve told you about before, which has used AK-47’s in its ads going after Republican senators, has a new ad up in Chattanooga. It never mentions a candidate, but its use of the phrase “Because of Iraq’’ is powerful as a refrain for a variety of problems with the war. Gen. Wesley Clark, the prominent military figure on the group’s advisory board, weighs in: “Because of Iraq, America is less secure.’’
Three Iraq war veterans speak first, and then the head of the group, Jon Soltz, an Iraq veteran himself, says:
But because we live in America, we do have a choice. We can fix our course in Iraq and find a much better way to keep America safe. Saying these things out loud is patriotic.
Then the type says:
Be an American Patriot.
Demand Change. The voiceover: Don’t Be Silent Now.
Then the piece goes on to discuss what sounds like a bizarre Corker ad about a 7 year old issue....
is the one we've been seeing in Florida. It's so powerful it had me standing up and pumping the air.
Keep both those ads running, day and night. It's time the truth got out there instead of stupid distractions like the Kerry fiasco.
my words can not do it justice. Thank you General Clark and the good folks at votevets.
"Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants."

Still, I'd rather a complete closeup of Wes. When they show him from a distance it isn't that clear. Maybe on TV it will be different.
Bush and Cheney have been trying to connect 9/11 with Iraq. I hope this ad doesn't get some people to think this way. I wish instead of just saying, "Because of Iraq" they would say, "Because of the Iraq War."
I would like to see "War" added to Iraq and "an increase of" added to the beginning of terrorists.
I do love the frankness to the ad though. Few words - BIG MESSAGE. Easy to remember after the ad is shown.
Thank you, General.
Leadership means lifting people up. --Wes Clark
When Americans go to the polls on November 7, they will not be voting because Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) botched a joke about President Bush on Monday, notwithstanding the national media's 48-hour fixation on Kerry's remarks. Nor will they be voting because President Bush, also on Monday, claimed that if critics of his Iraq policy are victorious, "the terrorists win and America loses." (That comment was mostly ignored.) According to the final pre-election New York Times/CBS poll, Americans will be voting because they desperately want a new direction in Iraq. The Times reports, "Americans cited Iraq as the most important issue affecting their vote, and majorities of Republicans and Democrats said they wanted a change in the government’s approach to the war." Just 29 percent of Americans approve of the way President Bush is managing Iraq strategy, "matching the lowest mark of his presidency," and nearly 70 percent "said Mr. Bush did not have a plan to end the war." (Veterans advocacy group VoteVets.org has released a powerful ad underscoring this point, titled "Because of Iraq..." Watch it.)

...either way. The Right Wing may think it supports their view. If producers clarify that it's the WAR in Iraq that is causing these things (rather than Iraq itself), I'd support it.

That kicks as...That is perfect.
God bless Wes...
