Time to Lead

| | | |

Yesterday, we Americans took a stand against the politics of personal destruction -- rebuffing the onslaught of negative advertising and dirty tricks.

Voters let themselves be heard and ordered a change in government, giving Democrats the opportunity to serve the nation and to provide the leadership that's been missing these past six years in Washington. With this opportunity comes great responsibility, and we must take the challenges ahead seriously, soberly and with clarity of purpose -- on issues like health care, the economy, education, and most of all, Iraq and national security.

It is a mistake for Democrats to celebrate rather than understand the meaning of yesterday's election.

America is looking for leadership right away, and Democrats should push forward a 3-point plan to address the crisis in Iraq and refocus our national security efforts:

  1. Change the course in Iraq. Democrats must pressure George W. Bush to listen to the generals on the ground and the whole range of experts -- not just the GOP -- on how to change the course in Iraq. We must work with regional powers, promote gradual transformation and stability, and regain the 'strategic consent' for the long-term U.S. influence in the region. We must use the situation in Iraq to propel us toward this larger goal, and in doing so, we will also find the right way to wind down our deployment there.
  2. Rebuilding alliances to address the real national security threats. We must bring our allies into the reconstruction of Iraq to ensure shared responsibility for the ongoing stability of Iraq itself and the region as a whole. We must provide real oversight on government contracts in Iraq; we cannot continue to allow no-bid contracts to Halliburton. And by bringing our allies together, we can finish the job in Afghanistan, and more effectively hunt down Osama Bin Laden and contain Iran and North Korea.
  3. Address energy independence and global warming as national security issues. We must put a policy in place to lead us to energy independence and away from the volatile and conflict-ridden regions where, today, the "geostrategic risk premium" is adding billions of dollars to the costs imposed on the American people. Our reliance on oil also impacts global climate change. As I have stated before, global warming has serious national security risks: stretching our military resources to deal with catastrophes (like Katrina) and increasing the potential for conflicts due to the displacement of people, competition for scarce resources, and adverse effects on agriculture.

Thanks to your help, we have a real opportunity to change the course in Iraq and fix our national security policy. And it's only possible because Democrats now have the power in Congress to stand up to President Bush and make change happen. You helped us make history last night, and I can't thank you enough for what you've done.

In this election cycle, WesPAC helped 42 candidates win their races across America, including 25 candidates who flipped their seats from Republican to Democratic seats. Our WesPAC community raised over $1 million for candidates, not to mention the millions of hours of volunteer time members of the Clark community provided to campaigns in every corner of our nation. And I am most proud of the fact that at least 6 veterans were newly elected to House and Senate yesterday. What a tremendous victory for America -- and it wouldn't have been possible without the hard work that you and I and hundreds of thousands of Democrats put in over these last 24 months.

Last night the American people spoke, loud and clear. Now we have our marching orders. It's time to change course.

It's time to lead.

Sincerely,

Wes Clark

For all that you did to help the Democratic Party achieve this great victory. I am in complete agreement with your 3 point plan as outlined above. And I plan to hold my newly elected Democratic officials accountable, every step of the way.

For your service, for your wisdom and restraint. I know Democrats owe so much of their victory for your hard work on hammering out a foreign policy agreement in our party and supporting so many great candidates.

I hope Democrats will heed your advice and address the critical national security challanges facing us. I know Jim Webb and so many others will certainly be a voice for the kind of pragmatic solutions you are pushing for.

Best of luck sir, and thank you for remembering global warming, so many people are forgetting that while celebrating today, but it means a lot to see you out front on this critical issue.

Your community here is ever grateful to you, General Clark!

Heartfelt thanks for ALL you have done and continue to do!

This is a serious undertaking for our Democrats in these new seats. Now it's vital that Democrats prove their worth and I am resolved they will as we continue to help and support each of them. I believe many of us realize there is much more to do and we are determined to help any way we can. It's not going to be easy and Americans need to realize that.  This is a new opportunity for us to succeed here and abroad!  With your three point plan, we will!

For me, that light at the end of the tunnel is and always has been YOU, sir, shining a light to lead us out of this dark time. Goodness follows you. Thank you!

I knew enough to bet on your pattern of superior success, General Wes, so I knew that our Democratic Candidates, overall, and especially our WesPAC candidates wouldn't come out looking badly, General Wes.

But I have to admit that even knowing of your A record in tough, big arenas didn't prepare me for this blue wave of such proportions.

Lookin good, General. Really good.

Now, if we can just keep on spreading that name recognition, especially to the big median income groupings.

I flew over to the John Edwards website this morning. And started to leave a message telling that you are the grandson of a millworker, but I could feel my deceased mother's eyebrows furrowing in disapproval of bad manners, and, especially, bad taste, so I restrained myself.

Your tireless, endless work to save our country, the willingness of your family to support your efforts, the calls to action to show us where to direct our energy and time -- all of it added up to a giant win for all!!

We are celebrating today, but realize our work has just begun! Thank you, Sir for pointing out exactly what the next steps will be, without missing a beat!

I hope General Clark, that you and Mrs. Clark will see fit to take a bit of time off -- a short rest/vacation to recharge your batteries for the continuing fight ahead of us!

Your inspiration, wisdom and influence has had an amazing effect. And you are so right to call on Dems to go forward in an effective way. I think this sort of things is what columnist Leonard Pitts was hoping for when he wrote that the Democrats now need to get out and earn their victory.

None of the 2008 candidates did as much as Wes to help get Democrats elected nationwide. None even came close. He added absolutely critical defense and foreign policy credibility and gravitas in tight races all across the country. And he worked tirelessly for the party. He is owed much gratitude.

As far as it being "time to lead," yes, it most certainly is. Of course we need to let the post-election noise die down, but when do people believe that Wes will formally announce?

Obviously there are myriad strategic considerations to the timing of an announcement. But still, I'd be curious if people have any ideas or (even better) information on this.

I'm ready for Wes to begin the march to leadership.

We need someone free of "taint" to replace Rumsfeld and a person who commands the respect of the military. We can't permit anymore cronies putting people's lives in danger. The senate needs to dig in their heels on this one.

It is interesting that this Administration now wants to cooperate in a bipartisan way. This after spending almost 6 years freezing Democrats out of any participation in the government, telling a United States Senator to "Fuck himself", and sytematically imposing its ideological will on everything from medical marijuana to Terry Schiavo. I would be in no hurry to work with this group whose only goal is to continue to attempt to remove whatever civil rights we have remaining.

No, I agree that Iraq is a mess and that it badly needs fixing. However, I suggest that our new Democratic Congress give Bush the minimal respect to which he is not entitled, and begin by passing legislation in both houses that is not controversial and that is favored by the great preponderance of Americans. Increase the minimum wage. Enable Federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Not only allow, but force Medicare to negotiate for better prescription drug prices for seniors. Things that no sensible person would oppose. Let King George veto them. Force each and every Republican who has to run in 2008 to vote for or against overriding the veto, and take names.

Whle it is tempting to let King George stagger around with Iraq on his plate for a while longer, given that lives are at stake, it is certainly understandable that you feel a moral imperative to craft a solution. But the Congress cannot bail him out.

The first couple of months should be used by the Congress to establish a credible Democratic domestic platform for 2008.

Therefore, regarding Iraq and the Middle East, perhaps a better alternative would be for you to make an announcement that you plan to run for President in 2008 and as part of your speech regarding why you're doing this articulate the proposal that you have for getting our troops out of Iraq and stabilizing the Middle East. You will have a nationwide audience for your proposals. No Congressman or Senator or group of Congressmen or Senators is more qualified and more able to accomplish this than you, Sir.

I disliked that divided feeling and having that mental burden. Well I still managed to vote… And it’s tough to balance what is right for our country and to be faithful to your church these days…

I was still passionate about the important issues that we have been facing, such as national security, war in Iraq, how our troops were and still are treated, the economy, health care and so on… I learned a great deal, and it was always a pleasure to listen to what you had to say and to see you tirelessly working and traveling... for the tireless effort you made to help Democrats achieve victory in yesterday's election.

The candidates you championed, like Jim Webb and so many others represent a progressive new voice for the Democratic Party. They and you represent competence, integrity and a commitment to progressive policies in lieu of runaway corporate power.

It concerns me that former Republican stalwarts and their "voices" in the main stream media, aware perhaps that Bush's failures threaten their hold on a financial juggernaut, may have recently begun to publicly distance themselves from George W. Bush's policies and the neocons for the sole purpose perhaps of salvaging the Republican Party's chances to hold onto presidential power in 2008.

It is hard to forget the extreme partisanship of James Baker III during the 2000 Florida election and his remarkable dedication to winning at all costs.

I worry that the Iraq Working Group may be more about saving face for George W. Bush as well as salvaging "control" over Iraq than finding a solution that helps our troops or resolves the real concerns of Iraqi people.

I also worry that progressives face a challenge from entrenched Democratic neoliberals.

I am grateful to you and to other retired military officers and fighting Dems for your political commitments because your courage and leadership are what we need to overcome these challenges.

Wes— I'm decidedly in the how can we ever thank you enough camp & I'm proud of this bumper crop of new & deserving talent freshening up the Democratic party- but, I'm with you on the "stay focused" thing as well. I've heard echoes of your point of view come out ringingly clear at every level of this campaign. So your ideas have been adopted on many levels. Can they stick?

This is the part now where I suspect it really does get political. While our side was out of power, cooperation flowed like tapwater. Now that all roads lead to 2008, I hope Democrats can understand the scope of what we face & keep cultivating some unity, not fracture into a thousand camps because if they do, we will die by a thousand cuts.

They need your guidance & steady hand.

The challenges we face are enormous & myriad. I agree, stay focused.

What a marvelous outcome, kudos are deserved. Anyone who held a sign, made the calls, showed up to vote? From the General on down to the guy I saw, standing on a street corner in Merrimack NH, alone in the rain, two days before the election. Well done. He looked lonely but resolute. What a hero. One last large congratulations and thanks. So much for "old news". The "new news" is: Back to work!! The General's counsel is timely and appropriate. We need to start the job now which will only see another success in 08! It's not the time to celebrate so much as to take our interim victory and move forward. I understand, "Not ready to make nice"... However, I'm going to suggest that we can do a better job of advancing our agenda by concentrating on how well we can continue to do our "job", and forget about how badly they did theirs. I don't want to lose focus on the prize. We want the General on the podium 01/20/09 taking the oath of office, right? Let's focus our efforts there and not on a rehash of how bad the Bush/Cheney club was/is. That too is "Old News". The "New News" is 2008 is "only" 24 months away and there's lots to do. Let's get started. It truely is "Time to Lead".

The "Bill Of Rights" and "Habeas Corpus" is not open for negotiation - it is the foundation to the freedoms of its' citizens in which men have died in wars defending.

Does Bush get a free pass, not even a slap on the hand for his roll and continuing attempt in the destruction of our Constitution? Between now and January, who is standing-up to this criminal?

Will Republicans Continue to Obstruct 9/11   Commission Recommendations?

One of the central lines of attack Democrats have lobbed at Republicans in recent years has regarded their inability and indeed opposition to passing all of the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission -- the creation of which a number of Republicans did not even support two years ago. With that in mind, one of they key planks of the House Democrats' 100 Hours agenda includes passage of the Commission's policies in full, a move that could lead to obstruction from Congressional Republicans, as Dan Eggen and Spencer S. Hsu report today for The Washington Post.

Homeland security experts cautioned that Democratic control of Congress will not guarantee implementation of some of the commission's most controversial suggestions, which have languished because of entrenched political and bureaucratic obstacles.

A prime example is the commission's call to base the federal government's homeland security funding on the actual risk of terrorist attacks or other calamities -- an approach that would generally benefit large metropolitan areas at the expense of smaller cities and rural regions. Although such an approach would favor regions represented by Democrats, lawmakers have preferred to spread dollars to as many jurisdictions as possible.

While Eggen and Hsu don't spell it out explicitly, the implication is that Republican legislators' lust for pork trumps their desire to protect American national security as efficiently and effectively as possible. Make no mistake; Republicans' determination to garner homeland security earmarks for their states and districts, many of which we can safely assume are far from the top of most terrorists' target lists, hurts efforts to keep Americans safe from attacks.

Now no doubt there are individual Democrats who fall prey to this same vice. But just as is the case with the issue of corruption, the improrpieties of individual Democratic members of Congress pale in comparison with the culture of the Republican Party that puts preservation of power above all else -- homeland security included.

So if legislation containing all of the 9/11 Commission's recommendations, including the prioritization of homeland security grants on the basis of threat rather than seniority of individual members, does not reach the President's desk, Republicans alone will be to blame. And in that case, the Democrats should stop at nothing to educate the American people about the skewed priorities of today's Congressional Republicans and their propensity to obstruct legislation that does not fit in with their radical ideology.

America Needs Wes Clark in 2008

General Clark,

There aren't many candidates' names that I respond to these days, but I can certainly support your candidacy without qualms.

If there's any way the super-bright folks of Arkansas can help, please let us know. We promise not the be snooty or know-it-alls.

As an ex-Infantry Officer from back in the '60s (remember those days?) I think our nation could use the judgement of a disciplined Army senior officer. There's not a Republican Bozo currently in office who knows his arse from page 8.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Best Regards from Eureka Springs!

There is still so much to do, and like many I hope that you will be the one leading us forward in 2008.

I can't begin to thank you enough. Should you decide to run again, you know we're with you! A Time To lead is excellent and says it all.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Murray
