Governor Ted Kulongoski www.tedforgov.com
Nation-wide there are 38 gubernatorial races in 2006. Twenty-two of the seats up for election are held by Republicans and 16 by Democrats. The Oregon Governors race has been coined as “Toss-up as campaign begins.” In a year when Democrats are considered in a good position to take control of more than half the nation's governorships, one of their worries lies in Oregon. Governor Ted Kulongoski took office in January 2003, and has successfully tackled many issues facing Oregon, including a $3 billion deficit in the state budget and an economic recession. In his first term Governor Kulongoski, a former U.S. Marine, has brought Oregonians together to solve some of the state's most difficult issues. He has strengthened protections from fraud and abuse for older citizens, raised the minimum wage, strengthened worker safety laws, worked to preserve Oregon’s natural beauty, and ensured that the state’s children are well-educated, healthy and safe.
Governor Ted R. Kulongoski was born in rural Missouri on November 5, 1940, and grew up in St. Louis in a Catholic boys’ home. After high school, Ted enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the 11th and 12th Marine Regiments as a forward observer with the artillery. Following a tour of duty overseas, Ted came home to build a life rooted in hard work, public service and family. Ted has served in all three branches Ted’s service on the Court of government. Every challenge Oregon faces, Ted has worked to solve as a legislator, executive and judge.
