By popular demand, Brick TeeVee is moving off the General Discussion thread on Saturday Night Clark-After-Dark to its very own blog entry. Here we can blog about what we saw and heard on the Sunday Gab-fests. And, as a bonus, we can also post stories about the outrageous claims made on Sunday, deciphered by other Poly-Sci "analysts", from mass media and well-respected bloggers, that come out later. Post anything you find to debunk the CRAP you hear on Sunday Talkie CorporoMedia!

Tonight I heard an extraordinary interview on The Peter B. Collins Show with Martin Garbus, one of the best trial lawyers in the country, called America’s “most prominent First Amendment lawyer” by Newsweek, the National Law Journal and other media. Garbus discussed his new book, The Next 25 Years: The New Supreme Court and What It Means for Americans (at BuzzFlash Premium). Just this week we have seen how this US Supreme Court has already placed ideology over medical science.
Warheads: Cable News and the Fog of War

I picked up this book by MSNBC military analyst Ken Allard at a NYC book sale because I expected that there would be some Wes references...and, of course, there were. I also thought it would be interesting to read Allard’s take on cable news and how it works. It’s a pretty interesting book overall. I really don’t know anything about Mr. Allard’s commentary not having seen him enough to even recognize him so I wondered how I’d react to him from his writing. Having now read the book, I think I actually sort of liked him.
I did find him to have a snarky tone toward Clinton throughout, writing things like “every time the president got in trouble, it seemed like he launched cruise missiles at places most Americans couldn’t find on the map.” But he throws some snark in there about Bush too so it kind of balances things out.

Wanted to share this with you all. This is an exceptional and entertaining work that compares current leadership to the founding fathers. Norton uses humor and a firm grasp on the issues to show us how vastly unprincipled our current leaders are. He makes a great case as to how the founders were radical progressives and how todays modern progressive movement is very much allinged with the founders own beliefs and ideals.
This is a MUST read. Simple as that. You want a look in to who the guys who founded this nation really were? You want to laugh while doing it? This is the book for you.
BOOK CLUB: Come Back To Afghanistan - by Said Hyder Akbar

I first heard of this book’s young author on my favorite radio show, NPR’s This American Life. Seventeen year old Said Hyder Akbar had gone to join his father in Afghanistan in the summer of 2002 and he’d taken recording equipment to record a radio documentary of his trip. It was fascinating. The next summer he went back and recorded another documentary for This American Life. It was at the end of this second show that I first heard of Come Back to Afghanistan, co-written with radio producer Susan Burton, which details his visits to Afghanistan in the summers of ‘02, ‘03 and ‘04.

Since I had some free time today (but mostly after some nudging by reggiesmom and bluemoon, direct and indirect ;), I took advantage of an opportunity to attend the George Soros talk in DC, entitled;
"DISMANTLING THE "GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR"
- METAPHOR ON MENDING AMERICA'S GLOBAL POSITION"
As you know, this was hosted by Steve Clemons (The Washington Note) with the New American Foundation and sponsored by the CARNEGIE ENDOWMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE, which was located off Dupont Circle.
The purpose of the event was to allow Clemons to discuss George Soros new book, "The Age of Fallibility - Consequences of the WAR on TERROR" and of course, how his views can help the US construct a stronger and more effective foreign policy.
OVERBLOWN ... And How

There is perhaps no better week in which to order John Mueller's new book, Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate Threats, and Why We Believe Them. Mueller systematically picks apart the myth of the global terrorist threat -- based on history, risk-assessment statistics, and some keen insights -- and opens the door to a long overdue debate.
Specifically, should terrorism be the front-burner issue of our time?
(Note: The conspiracy theorist in me wonders why this book was not ready for release prior to the 9/11 anniversary. However, the professional novelist in me knows from personal experience why and how release dates get bolluxed.)

Fiasco
By Thomas Ricks
Although we know much of the material covered in this book, the author tells the story from the view point of the Defense Department and the military. The book begins by discussing the estrangement of the professional military from the civilian leadership at DOD, and then examines the mistakes made by both Bremer and the military as they tried to implement the strategy which came to them from Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, and the White House.
Ricks is very critical of Tommy Franks. He wonders aloud how Franks got the job. Franks did not support the views of his fellow officers in the development of the war plan, and essentially ceded control to Rumsfeld. Furthermore, Franks inexplicitly retired after the initial assault was over, leaving his successor to clean up the mess. Ricks likens this action to “Eisenhower retiring after D-Day”.
