Live Earth Open Thread

| | | | | | | | | | |

kevin22262's picture

I think every major blog NEEDS a Live Earth Thread!

So this is my lame attempt.

Here is the main website link:
http://www.liveearth.org

Want to watch LIVE online? Go Here:
http://liveearth.msn.com

Seems like if you want to see it on TV, most people will only be able to see it on NBC tonight at 8pm.

But... It is on BRAVO right now! They are showing a really good mix of shows and Good Earth info and videos.

Why is it not on MTV or VH1? .. oh... they USED to be music stations and USED to fake social awareness and caring.

Friedman - The Power of Green

Thomas Friedman has written an excellent article in this week's NYT magazine section. Given the interest shown in the last Faith in Action blog series on Environmental Stewardship, I am sure that everyone here at CCN will want to read it.

After reading it, I think that addressing Global Climate Change must rank 2nd after the Iraq War in the list of items the next President of the United States must solve.

Wes Clark is the man to do it -- the rest of the lawyers and politicians in the current presidential race will not get it right.

For the first time since Al Gore gaveled the Congressional Black Caucus in 2001*, Al Gore will make a formal appearance in front of the U.S. Congress on WEDNESDAY March 21, 2007.

Here's where you can discuss THESE TESTIMONIES!

Warning on Iran - Wes in NH

Warning on Iran

By Dave R. Choate

(snip)

"This administration's foreign policy, in my mind, has not been adept," Clark said. "I've been saying for years now that the Iraq war was one we did not have to fight, and with Iran the military option should be the last resort, after this country uses diplomacy and economic leverage."

The Groundhog vs. Global Warming

About a month ago, while scanning my Reuters homepage for interesting stories, I spotted the following headline:

“Spring coming soon, according to U.S. groundhog”

The Gray Areas of Being Green

By now, we’ve all heard about how much Al Gore spends on electricity. And while it’s not my job to defend anybody’s actions but my own, I will say that shockingly there is more to the story than The Drudge Report has made public. For those who haven’t heard, that massive quantity of electricity that Gore uses was created from clean, renewable resources. And Gore spends considerably more on that clean energy than he would for normally produced electricity. He should be given credit for that.

Wes isn't rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Should we?

| | | | | | | |

Okay, Global Climate Change is my hobbyhorse. But apparently, it's also one of Wes's. At the DNC he clearly spoke out about the need to address the issue, and he spoke in practical terms of creating new, efficient, environmentally friendly infrustructure, thus creating jobs, and giving  industry a profit center other than war.  Think of it.  Instead of pouring billions into weapons in order to keep the jobs in the defense industry, and thus needing wars in order to create a demand for those weapons, we could turn all that industry and manpower into saving our civilization.

Angry Grumblings from a Busy Worker Bee

Grumbling #1
Now that Christmas is just around the corner, it’s a good time to ask this question: In 30 years, what are we going to tell the kids about Santa? That he sent the elves to live on a farm where there’s plenty of room to run and play? That he’s outsourced his toy manufacturing facilities to India – whatever’s left above sea level? That Santa drowned? Merry F*cking Christmas, Tommy!

Grumbling #2
I’m not a big drug-taker. By that, I mean prescription drugs. First off, I’m impossibly healthy. Secondly, by and large, for most common ailments, I don’t believe drugs have any remarkable effect on healing. The body does a damn fine job of kicking a cold’s ass on its own, thank you. And third, I don’t want to give my money (or my employer’s share of my insurance premiums) to big, corrupt drug companies. I mention all these things as a disclaimer to explain why I hadn’t yet discovered the phenomenon of drug stores with double drive-thru windows. As if one lane wasn’t fast enough to keep society hooked on happy pills? As if there wasn’t a new drug store on every freaking corner anyways? What’s it come to when the pharmacy is dishing out Prozac and Prilosec like Big Macs and Meximelts – times two?! Do you want Zoloft with that? What's next? Drive-by IVs? Nexium-loaded tranquilizer guns? There’s a great Morgan Spurlock documentary waiting to happen here. Drive through, please.
