"Aiding the American automobile industry is... a national security imperative."

Wes has an important op-ed in the New York Times today. Here's part of what he says:

In a little more than a year, the Army has procured and fielded in Iraq more than a thousand so-called mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles. The lives of hundreds of soldiers and marines have been saved, and their tasks made more achievable, by the efforts of the American automotive industry. And unlike in World War II, America didn’t have to divert much civilian capacity to meet these military needs. Without a vigorous automotive sector, those needs could not have been quickly met.

More challenges lie ahead for our military, and to meet them we need a strong industrial base. For years the military has sought better sources of electric power in its vehicles — necessary to allow troops to monitor their radios with diesel engines off, to support increasingly high-powered communications technology, and eventually to support electric propulsion and innovative armaments like directed-energy weapons. In sum, this greater use of electricity will increase combat power while reducing our footprint. Much research and development spending has gone into these programs over the years, but nothing on the manufacturing scale we really need.

Those are excellent points. We need to help Wes get this important message out as widely as possible.

Outside View: Wes Clark warns Iran
By Claude Salhani
Feb 5, 2007, 15:56 GMT

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Gen. Wesley Clark is concerned by Iran`s nuclear ambitions and cautioned the Islamic republic to take U.S. warnings 'very, very seriously.'

In a private conversation with this reporter, the former warrior-turned-politician at the same time admitted being worried by the Bush administration`s strong-arm policies in the Middle East.

'I`m concerned,' said Clark, a former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe -- SACEUR -- (from 1997 to 2000) and a potential Democratic presidential candidate in the 2008 race for the White House. Clark, who commanded Operation Allied Force in the Kosovo War, is worried that the rising tension between the United States and Iran could escalate to a point of no return. As a former soldier who has seen his share of action from Vietnam to Kosovo, Clark is not someone who scares easily.

But the Iranians, too, have reason to be concerned, says Clark. Speaking to United Press International Friday after addressing a meeting of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, Clark said that the Iranians should take 'very, very seriously the prospect of air strikes and missile strikes as well as other operations directed against Iran`s nuclear capacities and all other elements of their military power.'

When it comes to war Clark has an advantage over other presidential candidates. He has tasted the ugliness of war; he knows firsthand what it means seeing men -- sometimes boys hardly old enough to shave -- killed in battle.......

Clark beats Huckabee in potential matchup

| | | |

Very good poll out today from Arkansas News by Opinion Research. In Arkansas a potential matchup between Wes Clark and Mike Huckabee has General Clark up 51%-37%. Huckabee is a top-tier candidate for the Republicans and this poll shows General Clark can turn Arkansas blue against the AR governor. This is very powerful as far as the appeal for a Clark candidacy, as Huckabee has really been turning heads nationally lately.

Also, Hillary was polled and she gets 49%-36% over Huckabee. Very nice to see General Clark outpolling Hillary, as well. More from the poll:

Listen to Wes Clark fight for Dems on Hannity

| | | |

While on the road, General Clark was listening to the radio and caught Newt Gingrich attacking Democrats on Iraq while on Hannity's radio show (Hannity is on vacation so it is some stand-in guy doing the show). Standard wingnut name calling. Bringing up Vietnam and Jane Fonda. Calling people unpatriotic. Well, Wes Clark wasn't gonna put up with that. General Clark called into the show himself, and went to the defense of Dems. We were able to record the audio. Listen here

Cindy Trigg's Running for Congress...and it's General Clark's fault (grin)!

Hi again -

Ya know?  If General Clark would just quit inspiring people, we could keep wonderful examples of humanity (insert sarcasm) like Dean Heller in office forever!  But nooooooo...instead we get people like Cindy who are honest, smart, compassionate, straight forward, don't suffer fools easily, hard-working, ethical, and make the energizer bunny look like a slacker.

Kosovar Albanians Celebrate

Just happened to come across this recently posted youtube video celebrating Kosovo's independence and Albania's entry into NATO.

Wes Clark comments on the former in this video.

Just a reminder that good things can and sometimes do come to pass even amidst grave difficulties.
