Please thank Mary for finding this excellent interview of General Clark, by The Economist, at The Clinton Global Initiative. It's just over 8 minutes. Wish they all took at least this much time when interviewing him - he packs a tremendous amount of information into a small amount of time that never fails to make one think further!
"Aiding the American automobile industry is... a national security imperative."

Automobile Industry | Wes Clark | Economy

Wes has an important op-ed in the New York Times today. Here's part of what he says:
In a little more than a year, the Army has procured and fielded in Iraq more than a thousand so-called mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles. The lives of hundreds of soldiers and marines have been saved, and their tasks made more achievable, by the efforts of the American automotive industry. And unlike in World War II, America didn’t have to divert much civilian capacity to meet these military needs. Without a vigorous automotive sector, those needs could not have been quickly met.
More challenges lie ahead for our military, and to meet them we need a strong industrial base. For years the military has sought better sources of electric power in its vehicles — necessary to allow troops to monitor their radios with diesel engines off, to support increasingly high-powered communications technology, and eventually to support electric propulsion and innovative armaments like directed-energy weapons. In sum, this greater use of electricity will increase combat power while reducing our footprint. Much research and development spending has gone into these programs over the years, but nothing on the manufacturing scale we really need.
Those are excellent points. We need to help Wes get this important message out as widely as possible.
Smackdown in Buffalo - Wes V Rove and Ramen Noodles

Karl Rove had to be cursing the day that John Edwards ever decided to have that blasted affair. Had he but resisted the temptation (or had he not gotten caught)... Karl would never have found himself stuck in the pickle of a predicament he was in on Friday night at the University of Buffalo – Facing down General Wes Clark in a clash of the Titans. Two men who have undoubtedly carved their footprints on American history.

Hello, all.
So now some "classified" communique from Afghanistan now sez Bart isn't going for ANY of the so-called "four options". Wonder why?
Wonder what General Clark thinks about this.

I've got mine to heck with you | Killing the middle class | Economy

From economist, Yves Smith......
One week ago, I put up a post on the plight of a family that was at the end of its rope financially due to a lack of savings prior to the firing of the main income provider at the start of 2009. They had started using credit cards to pay for necessities, had paid on time until the previous month, and Bank of America stopped approving charges on the card.
This is the start of their story from last week:
Wall St is destroying America

Time was when ordinary people could work, raise a family, go on vacations every year, and retire comfortably on social security and their company pensions. It was also a time when you knew that your kids would grow up and do better than you did.
Then the 80s and Reagonomics came along. Small government and trickle down economics was the way to go......... and Wall St was king.

.......Over the past decade, the U.S. private-sector has lost 203,000 jobs.
That’s right: Zero job growth for 10 years.
In the 1940s, we created 10 million jobs. In the 1990s, we added 19 million new jobs. Even during the much-maligned 1970s, we added almost 16 million jobs.
The 2000s might be zero. Some economy, huh?

My city may not always get things right. We seem to love debate for the sake of debate. We just threw out an experienced (if overbearing) mayor in favor of two wildly contrasting candidates, neither of whom ever filled elective office before. We panic and run around screaming at the sight of a snowflake.
One thing, however, we do get right is the p-patch program.
