Debra is running for California Secretary of State this November to restore people's confidence in our democracy and safeguard our elections. As a pioneer in government reform, consumer protection, privacy rights, and open government over the past 14 years in the state Legislature, she is the best-qualified candidate on the ballot to do just that.
Debra has written a Voter Bill of Rights -- 10 simple but powerful principles that will guide her every day as California's next Secretary of State. And she has pledged to conduct a full, top-to-bottom review of all voting systems being used in California as soon as she takes office.

Debra's opponent, Republican appointee Bruce McPherson, has certified electronic voting machines, including Diebold, that are insecure and unreliable, with a litany of proven and well-documented flaws. At the same time, he cut a deal with the Bush Administration to implement a new voter registration database -- and that deal prevented more than 26,000 Californians from voting in the June primary even though they were citizens and eligible to vote.

California voters deserve a Secretary of State who is focused on removing barriers for eligible voters to cast a ballot -- and one who has the courage to stand up to the special interests and fight to make sure that every vote cast is counted securely and accurately. What they have now is a Secretary of State who pats himself on the back for certifying bug-riddled electronic voting machines for use in the state and creating a system that prevented thousands of eligible Californians from registering to vote.

With Debra Bowen, Californians will have a leader who will ensure free, fair, and transparent elections -- a system that is beyond question or reproach. She's the best choice for California Secretary of State.
