New Leadership for a New Direction
Juan Garcia is running to be the Democratic candidate in the race for the Texas House of Representatives, 32nd District. District 32 covers parts of Nueces County, and the entirety of San Patricio, Aransas, and Calhoun Counties.
Juan served in Washington DC as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Education from 1999-2000 and chaired the Board of Directors of "Citizens for Educational Excellence". Education is a top priority on his agenda.
"Despite three expensive legislative sessions dedicated to education, Texas still ranks second from the bottom in SAT scores, we're dead last in high school dropout rate, and we pay our teachers well below the national mean, all despite paying some of the highest property taxes in the country. I think we can do better."
~Juan Garcia
Garcia proposes increased investment in public schools and an increase in salary and benefits for teachers while maintaining strict performance standards. He also calls for cutting tuition rates at colleges and universities by putting the authority to set fees back into the hands of state legislators and to dramatically improve graduation rates.
On issues of public health and safety, Juan Garcia's agenda includes:
- Full resoration of funding for working parents of their Children's Health Insurance Program.
- Overcoming the nursing shortage by reversing the cuts made to state nursing training colleges.
- Restoring and fully funding the Drug Task Forcethroughout District 32.
- Restoring the $50 million dollars in Mental Health Care cuts.
- Increasing campus safety progams.
Juan also proposes reforming the current tax structure, decreasing property taxes and ensuring that Big Insurance pays it's fare share. He wants environmental protections stregnthened and strong campaign finance regulations to limit corporate interests involement in government. And to make sure every vote is recorded.
"You only get one chance to be a first-time candidate: not aligned with any faction, indebted to no one, and free to follow your own conscience. I take the privilege and responsibility of public service very seriously, and thought long and hard before entering this race. I'll make the most of this opportunity."
