The Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit

In December 1999, during a visit to Poland, General Clark met with the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Army, General Henryk Szumski, to observe live-fire training exercises of the soldiers of the First Armoured Brigade in Wesoła.

During the visit, General Clark was awarded the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, one of the most prestigious Polish military awards, by President Aleksander Kwaśniewski.

“You are a friend of Poland.” said President Kwaśniewski. General Clark praised Poland's contribution to the alliance.

The Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland was an award conferred to foreigners or Polish residents abroad for merit rendered in service to the Polish republic.

The medal is conferred in five classes: GC (awarded to heads of state and chiefs of government), Grand Commander, Commander, Officer and Member.
