GERMANY: Grand Cross of the Order of Merit

The Bundesverdienstkreuz (Grand Cross of the Order of Merit) is the highest tribute paid to individuals for services to the Federal Republic of Germany.

The award covers many types of achievements including political, economic, social, intellectual and philanthropic contributions. General Wesley Clark was awarded the Grand Cross.

The Bundesverdienstkreuz has eight classes: Special degree of the Grand Cross, Grand Cross, Grand Cross of Merit - Second class, Great Cross of Merit with Star and shoulder ribbon, Great Officer's Cross, Great Cross of Merit with star, Commander's Cross, Great Cross of Merit - neck cross, Officer's Cross, Cross of Merit - First class, Knight's Cross, Cross of Merit on ribbon, and Medal of Merit.
