ESTONIA: First Class Order of the Cross of the Eagle

In April 2000, General Clark made his farewell visit to Estonia to meet with various officials.

Estonian President Lennart Meri awarded General Clark the First Class Order of the Cross of the Eagle, the highest military award in Estonia.

In bestowing this honor, President Meri stated, in part:

“With this decoration, the Republic of Estonia expresses her gratitude to you, General Clark, for developing the relations between Estonia and NATO. As the Supreme Commander of National Defense in Estonia, I express to you, General Clark, the high recognition of our State and our defense forces for your personal contribution to the strengthening of our co-operation and for preparing Estonian defense forces for NATO membership.

We are grateful to you, General Clark, for the advice and assistance that the Estonian defense forces have received from you in improving their structure and defense capacity, and in enhancing their ability for international co-operation.

Estonia thanks you, General Clark, for the fact that Estonian units have served under your command in Bosnia and are serving in Kosovo today, and for having excellently organized and commanded peacekeeping operations. Under your supervision, the Estonian defense forces have improved their ability of international co-operation.”

The Order of the Cross of the Eagle was instituted in 1928 by the National Defense League to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Estonian independence. The honor recognizes services in the field of national defense.
