An interesting thing happened at the Paul Aronsohn campaign rally I attended in New Jersey where General Wes Clark was the featured speaker. It turned out not to be a campaign rally after all, and that was by intent. Instead it became a non-partisan public assembly after the Aronsohn campaign decided to focus the entire public event on the issues facing New Jersey’s Veterans community, and on providing the entire community with the opportunity to hear from and ask questions to General Wesley Clark regarding the security threats facing both America and the world. I came expecting a political rally and found myself at a civic event, which of course is what lies at the root of all politics in America, public discourse meant to find and advance the civic good for all of our people.

A good number of people came out to hear Wes speak at the American Legion in Rochelle Park NJ this evening. One quick thought about the rally, though...As Wes was leaving the podium, shaking hands, talking to people, our own GUYMAN shook his hand and said "please run"...The young man next to him added "please win". Please win, indeed.
Now, on to the fundraiser, across the street at Villa Roberto.....
Somewhere along the way, Wes came in and mingled with the crowd. I said no more than hello to him myself but there were a number of others who had a lot to say to Wes.

Clark talks about war and peace
New Jersey Jewish Standard

ROCHELLE PARK, NJ — On Tuesday night, at the bandshell decked with bunting over at the American Legion Post in Rochelle Park, Gen. Wesley Clark stood quietly as his bio was read to a crowd of about 100 veterans of many wars, including the war in Iraq, and some of their family members. Clark the only general in history ever to win an air war, and he told The Jewish Standard that that was a war — in Serbia and Kosovo — he almost lost.
The former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO — and former presidential candidate — came to the American Legion as the guest of Paul Aronsohn, the Democratic congressional candidate in the fifth district. But the upcoming election was not the topic. Instead, Clark spoke about how the war in Iraq was being prosecuted and charged that the Bush administration was failing to address the needs of the soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq — as well as those of veterans of all America’s wars.
Regarding Iraq, Clark said it would be virtually impossible to beat a hasty retreat. He quoted former Secretary of State Colin Powell as saying, "If you break it, you own it," and said the United States forces should not leave without making sure that there would be at least some kind of stability in the region. "We are over-committed and off by a factor of seven," he said, meaning it would take seven times as many men as there are on the ground to get the job done properly.
IMPORTANT: Please see NOTE below from an attendee about the reference above to "a factor of seven".
