I listened to the latest ClarkCast - Thoughts on 9/11 - this morning. Great stuff. Really great stuff.

I got the longer and more dynamic (read that: stellar, mindblowing, electrifying) version of the those remarks last night, live and in person, at Bethany College in WV.

We were running a little late and walked into the packed hall just as the General was beginning to speak, so I didn't try to take notes. I'm more of a watch and listen person anyway--I know, old fashioned of me in this new century. Truth is, I'm an idiot when it comes to technological things like filming, recording, and even taking pictures. So I'll give you the essence of my recollection of what he said.

Founded in 1840, Bethany College, a four-year private liberal arts school affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), has a long tradition of bringing people from the highest levels of American political discourse to their campus, Sam Vuchenich, the affable campus leader, and head of student activities, told me.

On September 11, 2006, General Wesley K. Clark delivered a lecture to more than 300 students, faculty, and townspeople in Bethany, West Virginia.

Vuchenich related that student organizations wanted to bring someone to campus who could put meaning into the fifth anniversary of 9/11.

As most of you know, whenever General Clark makes an appearance, as soon as he's done with his remarks, he is immediately swarmed upon like a rock star. Last night was no different, so I decided to grab some finger food with Da Kid while others got their chance to meet-n-greet a retired four-star general.

Finally, as the crowd subsided, me and Da Kid walked up to the smaller crowd surrounding General Clark. Let me disgress a moment here.

After Clark's comments, the president of the university told the crowd that there were four plaques in the foyer of Commencement Hall of previous speakers: two democrats (JKF & LBJ) and two GOP (Nixon & Ford). The college president told us that, within two years of giving speeches in Commencement Hall, every single one of them were in the White House! (The crowd erupted in applause and laughter!) He added that they hope to add a FIFTH plaque! With this in mind, our turn came to say "hello" to The General.

An interesting thing happened at the Paul Aronsohn campaign rally I attended in New Jersey where General Wes Clark was the featured speaker. It turned out not to be a campaign rally after all, and that was by intent. Instead it became a non-partisan public assembly after the Aronsohn campaign decided to focus the entire public event on the issues facing New Jersey’s Veterans community, and on providing the entire community with the opportunity to hear from and ask questions to General Wesley Clark regarding the security threats facing both America and the world. I came expecting a political rally and found myself at a civic event, which of course is what lies at the root of all politics in America, public discourse meant to find and advance the civic good for all of our people.

Shortly after 6pm, we began the event by first standing up, facing the American flag, placing our right hand over our hearts and reciting the "Pledge of Allegiance."

Afterwards, Paul took to the podium to introduce his special guest, Wesley Clark. Paul's profound respect for Clark was very apparent from the start, noting that he had worked vigorously for Clark's '04 presidential campaign. However, he said that their talk was not intended to be a partisan, instead it was indeed focussed on veteran issues, concerns and affairs. After reading Clark's impressive resume and list of accomplishments, Paul invited Clark to the podium to speak to the veterans of Post 170.

As always, Clark began by acknowledging the service of our veterans, asking those who served to raise their hands. We all applauded in support and gratitude.
